  • I'm having trouble selecting "Pickup" at checkout.

Prices on most Single Malt Scotch seem to be ~$10 above the all-time cheapest prices (i.e Scotch sales leading upto Fathers day).

Glenfarclas 12 is one of the cheapest at $89 (Close to the cheapest ever price)

Can anyone recommend some good whisky glasses?

    • yes please i need recommendation

      • +1

me 3..was looking at drinkware online-Peters of Kensington has some decent cheap ones. But i noticed for beer and wine glasses you can't beat Ikea. $2 a glass, good ones. But unfortunately nothing good in whisky glasses there.

    • Get the glencairn - but better off buying at dan murphy's as postage is not free.

    • +1

      Glencairn

    • I use this

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/360753

Glencairn at $10.99 per glass is a rip

      • +1

I'ev got the bodum glasses already. Was looking for whisky specific glasses.

But yeah, $10.99 per glass is too much. I saw some decent quality ones at Chefs hat for like $4 - $5 /glass. may go back to those.

      • +3

Lol @ bodum for whisky. Do you use that for wine as well?

        Get a Glencairn.

        • +1

What's wrong with Bodum for whisky bro?

        • +2

          @Homr:

It's double walled so looks like it's meant for coffee or other hot beverages.

If drinking neat or on the rocks then at least use a tumbler!

        • @spiff: Bodum works both ways. If its cold it keeps it cold, if its hot it keeps it hot.

          I drink my whisky neat

      • +1

It's a rip, but I'd be using a wine glass before those bodums.
You'll get a far better experience from something with a bowl shape unless you're just doing shots.

    • for me personally, I use a glencarin when I'm tasting or trying a whisky for the first few times, then every time after that I have a heavy crystal tumbler that I use. I like the weight of the glass and how it fits in my hand. The tumbler is an antique that was gifted to me and have been using it for some time now.

      and couple single malts

  • Any recommendations for a crystal decanter?

    • +5

I don't mean to be an alarmist but please be careful with crystal decanters because of the lead content. If you are just using it for serving (i.e. for a few hours at a time) I believe this is fine, but when used for storage, the lead starts leaking out in exponential and poisonous quantities. Lead also does not get removed from the body, so your levels accumulate over time. A lot of the smooth, modern-look sort of decanters (typically but not exclusively designed for wine) will be lead-free, but it is pretty hard to find a crystal "look" that is crystal-free. Truly (and unfortunately) it is the lead which gives it that beautiful, multi-colour refraction.

      • +1

Thank you for that important information.

      • I use the glass skull shape for storage, wll that be an issue?

        • Don't think I know what you mean. Can you show me? I'd be happy to help!

      • Drank "something" that had been in a decanter for 20 years - had a rich almost cherry flavour. Too sweet for a bourbon, too strong for a liquer. Turns out lead tastes sweet.

Oh well with lead poisoning I think constant exposure is more dangerous than acute exposure anyway.

        • My god! Well, it's a good way to learn the lesson. And I doubt you are worse off than the average person. There are heaps of random sources of lead about.

  • +2

For those of you who missed The Woodford Reserve deal the other day. This now works out cheaper at $44 a bottle or 2 for $88.

    • Sorry, couldn't resist $44 each or $88 for 2 :-P

    • Just a shame they dropped the booze to 40%

  • One litre of Malibu Rum for $28 if that's your drink - unheard of price

    • Espolon Tequila for $36 is also a great deal

    • +2

      Is that anyone's drink though?

  • +1

    MUMM Rouge is a bargain @ $35

    • +1

      8200’s MUMM seems cheap.

    • I have seen White Tail for $5 Dans. Yellow is usually about $7.

  • The Ebay prices with 20% discount are the same as if you just went to https://www.winebubble.com.au. So for Ebay store they have upped the price by 20%.

  • Is anyone having trouble logging into ebay? signin.ebay.com.au took too long to respond error. I have been trying for the last 30 mins.

Just spent a lot of time replicating an order for over $400 with First Choice Liquor.
PayPal doesn't process the order and eBay wipes the Shopping Cart.
      Big fail!

  • Just bought a Balvenie 12 YO for $68 pick-up … too good to be true.

Last week, it was $99 at DM.

  • Thanks! Got the Oban 14, and Luguvalin 16 for 165 total.

Smirnoff 1.125 1L from FirstChoiceLiquor, though Absolut 1L is only slightly more

  • I'm still struggling on how to tag certain words so i can get emailed when they are included in a post…?

    • This is not the right place to ask for help on this. I don't think this is possible, but if it is, you'll get a response in the Site Discussion forum. If it is not, then you can add it as a suggestion for implementation in that same area.

      • I did it once before, things seemed to have changed and I did it through this website as well

  • Hendricks was $65 at First Choice before the sale. Now it's $82. So annoying.

    • Tanqueray 700ml wax $42 yesterday at first choice, now $48 before coupon :(

  • For some reason, the search function doesn't seem to include First Choice Liquor. Or is it just me?

  • Is Castle Rock Blended Scotch Whisky any good?

Has anyone found any good Japanese whiskey? Cheers

    • judging by the prices i saw outside of Japan while travelling and within australia I would (if your buying alot) just take a trip to Japan and combine it on a holiday. For example I bought yamazaki no age for 4000 yen, i think chita was between 3000-4000 yen. When you convert that 85:1 = $47aud. I saw it in jr duty free (chita) for $80 something.

IF you take a party of people like I did it was much cheaper buying 9L of alco between 4 and combining it on holidays. similarly i also saw other no age for between $400-650 MYR = $150 + aud…. the price jacking outside of japan even for no age is insane!

i was tempted to try the jr duty free's hibiki harmony.. but i think circa $100 it is again a steep ask!

  • Just wondering if anyone can recommend out of the links which websites are reliable and good sources of whiskey? Iam looking for not just the everyday drinking entry level style, something abit more expensive. Say a 12, 18 etc year malt. At the same time im not looking to spent $400-1000 or something.. perhaps a good drop or too.

Alll the good ones I saw in duty free on my recent trip were quite expensive i.e. Glendronach 21 year old, was $285 in jr duty free and similar in dan murphys so didn't bother buying duty free. Ended up picking up a Dewards 18 year old The vintage.

any suggestionS? never ordered online before so not sure who to goto or rely on.

    • Plenty of great links to great prices above you for 12 and 14 yo
Much more than that though and the prices skyrocket.
Anything 18yo is in the $200+ band, anything 21yo+ in the $350 plus
It's just the way it is.
Sitting on stuff that long before you can sell it makes it expensive and the relative rarity further inflates the price.

      • +1

I dunno about that; As a Glenfarclas fan you can find their aged stuff at a great price. Under $150 delivered for 21yo, under $200 for 25yo. No double cask bollocks or that, just a good old school sherried malt. Granted, other malts do start to get up into that range you suggest but there is quality below those prices if you know what to look for.

        • +1

          Yep, just making generalisations.
For someone wanting to get started though, just stick to the "value" ages.

        • I haven't tried Glenfarclas or Glenrothes before? Is the 12 years or I believe I saw a NAS on dan murphys etc. worth an introduction? I only ask as I wanted to get some old vintages for birthday years so circa 1988 and the like and wondered if it was worth the $300-500 something for an once in a lifetime drop on your big birthday marks.

WOuld one get a reasonable idea of these 30 year drops that are bottled in say 1988 by trying the entry level stuff?

I've typically liked Sherried casks from the likes of Mortlach and Glendronach (their 15/18 yr stuff at local whisky specialists - never found it sold in airports to buy). So i assume abit of sherry hits me well. I am not a huge connoseur (sorry i definitely speltt that wrong haha, and it's 1am so im' lazy to dictionary it).

        • @SaberX:

WOuld one get a reasonable idea of these 30 year drops that are bottled in say 1988 by trying the entry level stuff?

If you're dealing with the straight house label releases from Glenrothes, Glenfarclas etc (e.g. not independent bottlings) then the 'house style' is generally maintained through the official range bottlings, so a 12yo will be a similar (if simpler) taste to the older bottlings.

Re: Glenrothes - these guys are generally known for releasing 'vintage' whiskies (i.e. Distilled 2000, Bottled 2018). This style of 'age statement' is in the minority in Scotch Whisky (more common among smaller distilleries and independent bottlers). Most distilleries (eg Glenfarclas) give the age statement which means it contains whiskies of AT LEAST that age, but can contain older whiskies.

Just for reference though, a 25 yo Glenfarclas is $190, while a 30yo is $590. In my not so humble opinion, there is no way 5 years additional maturation makes for whisky that is $400 better in this case…

    • If you find one you like the look of, its a smart idea to go round the city and see if you can find a bar that serves it. That way you can get a taste test before potentially blowing $200 on something you find undrinkable

  • i was also looking at picking up some old birth year whiskeys. just wondering - how does everyone go about trying before they buy? Alot of the expensive $200-500 bottles that you want just as an once off I've never tried before or any in that distillery's line… are there any websites where perhaps you can order a small bottle bottled up and distributed from one large bottle? Better than dropping $400 for a special one off occasion bottle then finding you don't like the malt? Any suggestions?

Or do people just drop money on an expensive drop and roll the dice to see if they like it?

  • Any good deals on Japanese whisky like Yamazaki?

  • +1

Does everyone save their pennies on Ozbargain to put towards fine scotch whisky?

Something went wrong. Please try to check out again.
