I think it's the best price for a gaming laptop with this spec.
I have had Acer V Nitro 571 and currently have 592 and I am quite happy with it, very good build quality. Some reviews say it may overheat under heavy load.
Kogan have a similar 593g model (Less ram, less ssd, weaker graphic) for $2,250.22

I’ve read and reread those specs. Some of them are astonishing.

    • +1

I'm guessing you're mainly referring to the amount of RAM it has?

      • +1

The capacity of the SSD is great for the price as well, but yea, mostly the RAM.

      • 16gigs is insane.

        Edit: it’s 32!

I read a review that had it as 16.

        • 16GB isn't insane. All performance laptops come as standard with 16GB these days (both gaming and "performance"-spec business grade).
Both at home (just a casual gamer and browser) and at work (lot of multi-tasking with specialist software) I sit on 6-10GB usage with spikes beyond that, and the remainder is always in use as cache. It's not uncommon for me to be sitting on 8GB without even loading up a game or specialist software, and no I don't keep 999 Chrome tabs open.

For some really specialist stuff I've got a work PC with 64GB RAM, which still isn't enough: I have to rely on the page file on the SSD to get me all the way up to 256GB of memory. :)

  • +3

    wtf 32gb ram holy shit

    • -1

You likely won't be saying that by the time you end of life this thing. But yes rare to see as a default spec in a laptop.

  • Whoa that’s pretty good specs…

  • +3

Great find! Price is almost close to building a desktop with those specs. Not to mention portability.

  • +2

too bad it is a 15.6

    • -4

And too bad it's just a 1060. Still the best deal at the moment.

      • +5

        "Just".
Yea show me a laptop that doesn't have an external cooling solution, weighs under 3kg and is under 3cm thick that can actually fully utilize anything over a 1060. Laptops simply cannot shed that much heat, even with 3 fans.
Anyway, its a 1080p screen, you don't need anything more than a 1060.

        • If you want decent graphics then deal with the larger form factor.
If you want a lightweight all purpose machine, you don't need anything with 32GB RAM!!!

        • +2

          @syousef:

I use my laptops for video processing, photographic processing, VMware for technical work etc. There are lots of people who want 32gb of RAM, that don’t care about games. This machine looks brilliant.

        • -4

          @Praeto:

No machine that overheats is brilliant. Unless you mean brilliant orange and grey.

I also run virtual machines and photo editors. I'll stick with my "lowly" 16GB predator with a 1070.

  • How does this compare to the dell gaming laptop? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/360366

I just purchased the dell which is yet to arrive. Would the Dell be worth returning for this laptop?

    • +3

On specs alone, this Acer beats the Dell hands down. I'd say the Dell has reasonably better quality build than the Acer.

You just need to think if it is worth the upgrade to i7. Storage and memory are great but if the Dell satisfies your requirements (a gaming laptop) then the Acer probably isn't worth the extra money.

    • im in the same boat. however I think 32gb RAM is overkill. i7 is the only thing worth upgrading for, but Im not willing to pay the price difference so i'll pass

    • also I think heat is gonna be an issue and im quite comfortable with the look of the Dell grill

    • Not trying to frighten you guys but.. I just received my dell 7577 model that was on sale the last time. Totally disappointed with it. After spending $1350, it came with a back plastic lid that was uneven and with missing clips so some parts of it wobble. The first hour i managed to load some stuff and uninstall the bloatware but after that, the laptop stop booting up, the screen starts freezing and starts glitching. I have videos of it and i spend the afternoon speaking with a Dell customer care service. In the end, I decided to return the laptop after owning it for less than 12 hours. This could be just pure bad luck and one bad apple since majority of ppl say is great. But not on my end. I hope i get my refund and will probably find another laptop. If u want the videos of the glitches and pics of the uneven surface, i'll be happy to send it to you.

      • I worked for dell a few years and i would never buy one.

        • +3

Do you mind sharing your reasons as an ex-employee?

          I hope you weren't a disgruntled one.

      • I'd have to agree. Dell laptops aren't what they use to. I bought an XPS 17" 7yrs ago and it developed problems 3yrs in. Then last year I spent nearly $3k buying latest specced XPS 15 and immediately had screen touch issues, wifi random disconnects. Meanwhile my other Apple + Asus laptop has been running without hiccups.

    • Dell for looks and build quality (doesn't overkill the gamer aesthetic), but if you want the best performance this is a really fantastic deal. I was looking around myself for a laptop and looked at both in real life, and like the previous gen Dell Inspiron gamings the screen on the Acer is far, far better than the Dell, which was a reason I actually returned my Dell Inspiron 7567.

  • Great specs for that price

  • That's a great deal!

Don't forget to buy discounted gift cards when purchasing.

My RACQ membership saves me 6%, bringing this $1606.55 delivered.

I'm very tempted – it's a half decent upgrade from my old Lenovo W541 mobile workstation (i7-4810QM, 32GB, 2x 512GB SSD, Nvidia Quadro K2000M) and would mean I could seriously try modern VR – and it's only 40% the price!

I would be taking a serious resolution drop though! 3K down to FHD!

    • Edit: found answer

  • +1

    dat 32gb ram hnnnnnrg!

edit: reviews say thermal throttling is an issue, making it hard to even touch the keyboard during gameplay

    • Use a USB keyboard!

  • I am waiting for a 1050/ti laptop to crack around/under 1k, but this is a pretty good deal. I can see how it would heat up. It has no ventilation…

    • -1

Today I ordered a refurbished Inspiron 15 Gaming Laptop with a 1050 Ti for for 910ish…

you might want to check if there is another available ¯_(ツ)_/¯

      • Link?

        • google dell outlet > then look under inspiron laptops

  • +1

id be a bit afraid of how this handles heat. would love to know from someone who has one!

    • Not a problem. Fans do a great job of keeping itself cool.

      • Off the top of your head do you know what temps your CPU and GPU reached during heavy loads? Every review on this basically mentions it has the worst thermal control.

  • +2

The Acer Aspire 7 A717-71G-767X 17.3" i7 Laptop might be better (if size isn't a concern), as it likely better handles the head issue (the 17" varieties seemed to not throttle GPU and CPU at high loads, though were still very/too hot to touch).

$1867.45 + shipping, or $1,755.40 with 6% discounted eGift Card.

  • +1

What I don't get is why bother with the USB 2.0 ports, it's 2018 not 1998 anymore. My 5 year old ASUS Rog has all USB 3.0s

    • +1

It also has a 3.1 port, and how many high speed devices do you need connected at once? If lots, just plug in a USB-C to multiport 3.0 hub!

If maximum performance is your goal, based on reviews of Acer 15” vs 17” cooling systems, the 17” is the one to get, if you can stomach the larger form factor)

If money is no object, pay more for RoG or Predator models with similar specs or wait until they too drop to this level.

      • I'm just curious as to why they still use it, it's been superseded by not 1 but multiple speeds.
Just like how they don't produce just a plain CD drive anymore it's either Blu-ray or DVD and the are all backward compatible

        • +2

Because it’s cheap, and USB keyboards, mice, many other things don’t need 3.1s speed.

  • +1

Great specs but in my experience anything outside of the predator range from Acer has proved to have the worst QC, so just be cautious.

    • I wouldn't say that. I'm sure they have made some stinkers but I bought my wife and kids a decent Acer laptop for $500. And the one before that was an Acer too - only issue with that one was keys broken on the crappy keyboard. It's in our bedroom as our media PC now.

    • I reckon the same can be said for most other brands though, you're never going to get the same QC for less expensive product lines/series. Also an interesting fact is that most laptops actually come out of the same factories (ODM).

  • (Replied to wrong comment)

    • How? My Strix has a 1060 and runs project cars with everything on ultra and i get well over 100FPS @ 1080P.

      VR is no issue either.

    • The 1070m, like the validity of your advice - doesn't exist!

  • i have a nitro 17 inch, and it is a pain to upgrade the hdd and ram. you will have to unscrew how many screws then take the whole bottom lid off. i did it once and it gave me such a trauma that i wouldn't dare do it again and i put up with hdd until now.
there is 1 hdd and 1 empty m2 socket. you will have to buy a more expensive m2 ssd if you want ssd unless you replace the hdd with ssd but a few years ago it wasn't practical - small capacity and expensive.
and from my memory, the m2 socket is on the other side of the motherboard, so

first, you will have to disconnect two small flat data cables (1 for the keyboard the other for the backlit), re connecting those was a disastrous experience without tools - by your fat fingers only.
second, you need to unscrew some more screws to take off the whole motherboard to reach the m2

i gave up here - after removing a few screws, the motherboard wasn't moving, i had already exlpored too far, i didn't want to break my then newly bought laptop so i quit.

of course this one has 512gb ssd so you might not need to upgrade anything but i will just let you know

    • +1

I have the 256GB version of the 15.6" Nitro and it's dead easy to add an extra HDD/SSD. Unscrewing 10 screws is hardly a difficult task. The RAM is under the keyword so that's more difficult but no needed in this case.

  • Thank god for 32gb of ram its going to solve the question "is the ram upgradeable, 8 isnt enough" 😂😂

    • What if I want 64Gb? Does it have 2 x 16 or 4 x 8???

      • Ignore that. Brain fart. It's likely 4x 8GB. They always cheap out on that front!

        • But they’ll give you all the bloatware in the world!

      • 2x16GB since it only has 2 RAM slots.

  • This is a hell lot of laptop for the money!

  • I've been holding out for 8th gen processors but there doesn't seem to be many deals on them for high end machines.
Are they just not that big a deal vs the one in this laptop or are they just not fully available yet?

    • +1

What do you need 8th gen for?
This already has a high-power quad-core. The 8th gen's out atm are only the U series. Despite now having 4 cores they have considerably less power and throttle down much harder. The 7700HQ is superior for performance.

    • I'm interested to see the performance of i7-8700HQ. But for now the 7700HQ still beats the 8th gen U series in terms of performance.

  • +2

I have an older version Nitro (960, i7 etc), and I’m going to assume they’re quite similar when I say this. When I bought it I was aware that the track pad was not great, the cooling was sub par and the laptop case itself was average at best. Which more than likely is the reason that they are so cheap in comparison to other builds. I spend a large portion of my time using this as a desktop with a $20 coolermaster fan underneath it because it does run extremely hot without it under heavier workloads.

In saying all of that, I am in no way disappointed, you pay for exactly what you get and if you’re conscious of that it’s great!

    • I always forget the trackpad is quite important. That’s part of the reason why I love the surface pro keyboards and any other trackpad which is similarly built.

      • As it’s gaming focussing it’s not necessarily a deal breaker but it’s still important for when you’re not using a mouse! I haven’t tried a surface pro so I can’t comment though.

  • +1

Pulled the trigger, will be a great laptop for my partner. Thanks OP

  • anyone know what the screen is like in this?

    • +1

      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Aspire-V15-Nitro-BE-VN7-5…

Decent brightness and good contrast. Colors are a bit inaccurate for it's sticker price but at this price point it's pretty great, will only be an issue if you're trying to do photo work or something.
Response times are a little slow but again for the deal's price point, it should be acceptable.

      • thanks, well photos is exactly what I'll be doing with it, but got one anyway. I can always calibrate it, and I dont tend to do finishing on the laptop - just a rough first pass. Will replace a 6 year old dell. :)

        • +1

Screen is actually really nice on this laptop. Very bight and clear with excellent viewing angles.

      • Yeah I've been thinking about getting a Gigabyte Aero 15 to replace my old 2014 gt70 since it has the pre-calibrated display, but it even that just scrapes over 90% sRGB coverage, and unless you're willing to go 4k (on a 15" screen? why?) or risk off angle discolouration with a TN panel there's not a lot out there.. This has not quite so nice a screen as the Aero, but it's now almost half the damn price I'm sorely tempted.. :/

EDIT: was meant to be in reply to getho, can't find delete post option..

  • Has anyone managed to hook this up to a 4k monitor? From what I've read the HDMI is 2.0 and only able to run 4k/60Hz. The thunderbolt/usb 3.1 uses the Intel graphics (not the 1060). Can anyone clarify/confirm this please? Thanks!

    • +1

      Isn't 4k 60hz enough?

    • I have a 1080 on my gaming pc and hooked it up to my samsung 65 4k and games running on ultra it struggled to maintain 40fps was a big letdown let alone running a 1060 at 4k

  • Hi. Can anyone tell me why the ticket price of the Acer Aspire 7 A717-71G-767X 17.3" i7 Laptop that Jamver mentioned ($2197), is so much lower than this laptop? ($2699) Cheers

    • Half the SSD storage for starters, but I wouldn't take any JB RRP price on face value - just what it's actually selling for (i.e. the ticket price).

  • amazing laptop and amazing price, especially for JB hifi…

  • This is a good deal.

  • +1

incase anyone is wondering, the same deal is instore at JB Hi-Fi Elizabeth, SA
if I had the money to spare, I'd jump on that straight away!

  • Those are some amazing specs for the price

  • Deal over? Link leads to 404 page now…

    • Damn it, it looks like its dead. That's a shame, i've been umming and ahhing for the last hour about buying…

      • I am happy I resisted, but it was a good deal, other side of me is sad tho

      • hold out for a sweet Triton 700 deal I say

      • +1

Ah couldn't help myself… Just drove 2 minutes to the JB down the road, they only had the display model left but I bought it anyway! The price on it was $1999 but the guy sold it to me for $1699 as he'd been looking at it all day at that price tossing up buying it for himself. Score! :)

  • +1

Bought one, probably was one of the last ones to get one. But i'm looking forward to it. Also went ahead and bought a good cooling pad.

    • Hi,do you have any recommended cooling pad ?

      • Bought the 'Marvo FN-30 Origina' cooling pad. The Fans seem to line up with the gpu and cpu, so they can provide adequate extra cooling. But you can wait till i get it and i'll tell if its shit or not.

        • Thanks this one looks pretty good, where can I get it instead of ebay ?
Also can I ask what two USB ports for in this pad?Because I got one cooling pad too and it has two USB ports as well but using one works tho.

        • @Kooka69:Just search "marvo fn-30", Amazon sells it. The Extra USB replaces the usb port you use from your laptop to the cooling pad. If you do plug a usb into it, take into account that there will be reduced current across the port reducing data rate transfers.

  • +1

Got it! https://imgur.com/a/A65O4 $1659, not too shabby!
I told my friends to get on it at the same time but it's been removed from the jb site.

    • Hey mate. How did you get another $40 off?

  • Any chance someone could post their receipt so I could try to claim it instore?

    • Youd only be able to find floor stock by now, and by rights they should do those for that price

  • +1

Anyone who missed out can get your local jb to transfer stock. I just got one transferred from I think it was Bankstown for the same price.

    • I tried on the same day this was posted and no luck, they've sold out everywhere

  • Anyone knows it come with 32bit or 64bit ?

    • I don't think 32bit is really a thing anymore, anyway, if it's more than 4GB of ram it has to be 64bit cause 32bit only supports max 4GB.
