  • Are the Aldi refills good, or is it better to get the ebay ones?

    • +13

I stock up every time they stock them. They're great. Nice and thick, good size too - easily fit two decent steaks or chicken breasts, probably three. I use them for cooking sous vide and have had no problems with long cooks at high temps (up to 3 days @ 70 for a brisket) with no problems. Using a probably 4 year old version of the vacuum sealer and it's never skipped a beat either.

I've bought eBay ones before, and they were fine too. I don't think these are particularly better or worse.

Will be buying 5-6 boxes when they're available.

      • Thanks

      • +2

Same experience as above. Will be grabbing another 5 boxes too.

      • Nice. Now if I can get a deal on a sous vide machine I'll be set.

      • Are you buying the bags or the rolls?

        • +2

I always buy the rolls, much more economical unless the bags are exactly the size you always need.

        • +1

LOL I always buy the bags, because I'm very lazy. I'll usually get a box of rolls as well for bigger jobs, but given the choice I always go bags. Going purely on square cm, 42 bags would be the same area as 2 rolls (28,000cm2), so you're getting basically an extra two bags for the hassle of cutting and sealing both ends as opposed to one. But as Mic said, you cut the roll to size. Problem I usually face is I either under or overestimate how much I need so I tend to waste a fair bit of the roll :-D So for me the bags work better. And one less seal to fail IMO.

Just remember, always roll the top of the bag over about two inches so you don't get any gunk on it when filling. I used to have about 25% failure rate on seals until I started doing that.

We normally wipe the sealing area with paper towel if it gets wet but your method makes much more sense. Will be using it in future.

      • Ditto - found this to be a good sealer and the rolls work well. Do a bit of sous vide, but mainly I store marinated steaks in the freezer - they come out brilliantly a few months later.

      • Same here I will buy some rolls

    • No, not IMO, I don't get as good a performance out of the ALDI ones as I do from my ebay ones
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-X-VACUUM-FOOD-SEALER-10MX20CM-R…

I often have it fail to suck properly with the ALDI rolls, especially if I open use some and reseal, the ebay ones I got reseal 95% of the time

My machine is over 2 years old though and I use it to seal brew related stuff - Hops, milled malt (rather dusty) and foods

      But it's a great machine

      I guess YMMV

  • Is this sealer any good?

    • +1

I love it. I had an original Aldi one that only had one function, which worked well for a few years then the side clips broke.
I've had the current model for ~2 years now. Better with options on vac pressure and seal temp, plus you can run the sealing function by itself (for rolls).
May still have the same issue with the side clips, but does look a little different. Just be a little gentle clipping the lid down.
I use either the Aldi bags - or stock up from Super Cheap Auto when on sale.

The sealer and their bags are awesome. I bought mine when they were on clearance and stocked up on the bag. I use em for sous viding 48 hours beef ribs at 63C and they held true!

my local aldi was selling these for $20 around 6 months ago. Im guessing left over stock from the previous sale.

  • Does the sealing work with heat to create the seal?

  • Use this for my Salami's. Top pick.

Time to stock up on bags for the shop. Thanks for the heads up OP

Aldi $60 vs eBay $40 sealer machines

    Does anyone have insight? Diff?

-_- the link I posted above apparently was an affiliate link? I directly copied from the eBay app…

Let's try this one for the example:

  • I've calculated that based on cost per wash, it's cheaper to get the Cole's brand Ultra than getting the Trimat. There's only a 2% difference in scores and it's cheaper than the top two ( Trimat and Omo) even during half price sales.

    Cost per wash
    80% Trimat 5kg : $0.23
    80% Omo 2kg (half price): $0.23
    78% Coles Ultra: $0.18

Coles Ultra is always the same price so no timing required.

Perfect :) Was just looking at freezing some coffee beans but wanted a vacuum sealer to ensure no moisture gets in. Great timing, thanks OP!

    • I'm no expert but from what I've read vacuum sealing coffee beans will pull the oils out prematurely and alters the taste.

  • These go hand-in-hand with those 3kg Wagyu steaks and 2kg salmon fillets from Costco. Always stock up on these when Aldi sells them.

  • So are the bags 22cm wide, or 30cm wide? My machine only does up to 28cm wide I believe.

Hey OP, would you mind taking a look at the catalogue and finding out if they have a kitchen trolley as well? They had the two together last time, and the trolley sold out.Thanks.

  • I got one of these, it probably isn't as good as removing all the air but I can reuse it and the seal is really good. I use this for my Sous Vide with the Anova.

  • Typical ozbargain here, I've got no need for one of these but I think I'll buy it and find a use.

    • If you buy meat you can benefit from this. Buy bulk packs cheaper than single meal-size packs, seal and freeze what you can't eat. Without air, freezer burn is barely a problem. Then team it up with an immersion circulator (sous vide machine) and you can cook your meats from frozen perfectly every time.

Buy bulk meat > portion and freeze > cook sous vide as needed > save money > yum.

      • save money > yum.

Surely yum doesn't depend on saving money? :)

        • (bulk meat > portion and freeze > cook sous vide as needed > save money) = yum.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And my wife is currently searing off some sous vide pork chops :-D

        • +1

@steinmeister: Alright, yum it is then.

  • Does this work for pet food?

    • if it's "wet" it'll struggle. they're more suited to solid foods.

  • I'm gonna buy this vacuum sealer and a whole wheel of Jarlsberg cheese.

  • +1

Thanks, picked up 3 boxes of bags and 2x5m rolls.

  • +1

Thanks nocure, picked up a couple of rolls the results of which may be a couple of rolls.

  • +1

Hummmm…. My store still had over 20 units.

Know if these ever go on clearance if they can't sell it in X weeks?

Also, does this one come with a hose those time? A sale a year ago, someone said it didn't come with a hose
