What do you use these for anyway?

They count bitcoin and apparently can tell you who shot JFK.

I use it as a quick way to access google, stream music and as a wireless speaker

    • Mine get used mainly for whole house music. the speaker quality is surprisingly good, and with a few dotted around the house they make a great ghetto Sonos setup.

Home automation. I can ask my Home Mini to do things like turn on the lights, or start the vacuum.

      • "Hey Google, turn on wife"

Hasn't worked for me yet :(

Any difference between this and the kogan one?

I use the minis for music through my sound bar, turning Yeelights on and off and now that I have a sonoff wifi power switch, turn the fan on and off.

When this first came out I was so excited & couldn't wait to get one. Then I bought one & had a ball asking it various questions & researching what great things GH can do. That was all in the first week. Then all the stupid questions stopped like "how's my commute?" Etc & only used it to listen to music from spotify. The mediocre sound from its speaker was getting on my nerves & not been able to connect to a external speaker was very frustrating. After two weeks I had enough with a device that ended up nothing but a speaker that dished out crap sound, so I sold it. That's my review 😊

Starting to set up the beginnings of a reasonably voice activated home (with Philips Hue and a Harmony Elite), really wanting a couple of Google Home Minis to finish things off.
But the 2 for $74 deal around boxing day has totally destroyed my perception of value of these things! Could get one delivered from same seller as OP for about $63, but that just feels like a rip-off by comparison.

As for whether they're worth it - totally depends on a) what you have or will have connected and integrated (ie. lights, switches, thermostats, chromecasts, harmony remotes, netflix or youtube and spotify accounts etc), and b) if you're willing to take the time to work out exactly what you can ask. For example they make a good alarm clocks, white noise generator, recipe or e-book and podcast reader, it can play word games etc etc.
