UPDATE:

RSPCA NSW

RSPCA NSW desperately wants to find forever homes for every single one of our shelter animals. For this, we need your help! From 23 February to 25 February 2018, adopting a pet from RSPCA NSW costs just $29, whatever the animal’s age, size or species. There’s no better time to find your new best friend! If the adoption fee is normally $29 or less, the animal will be fee free during this period.

Please note that pre-registration does not guarantee adoption but if you do adopt on the day, your details will already be in our system, maximising valuable time spent with your new pet.

Don’t forget to bring along your unique number (you will receive this in an email once you register) proof of identity (e.g. drivers licence, proof of age card, passport etc.) Please note that our standard adoption procedures still apply, this helps ensure each animal is rehomed with the perfect forever family. Each adoption fee includes desexing and microchipping services, vaccinations, behavioural and veterinary checks.

    • I assume this was a joke?

There's not a lot of profit to be had in breeding dogs. Certainly not if you do it properly with the welfare of the animal in mind. There are much easier more certain ways to make a buck. Did you know about Parvo. If you have a litter of dogs wiped out you won't just be losing profit, it'll cost you a lot of money in vet fees, clean up, you won't be safe to breed that dog again or breed in your home again for years, and you get to watch the dogs die :(:(

I have never bred dogs myself but had put money down on a puppy and the litter was wiped out :( I wouldn't even go back to collect my deposit because I wanted to buy another soon. Had the breeder deposit it in my bank account.

      • Yes, yes. It was a joke, and heaven forbid anyone make a joke about animals.

does RSPCA New South Wales do these's offers, never see it for our state, always victoria

Please can someone explain how this works - do I just rock up to my nearest RSPCA and there'll be pets up for adoption?

I clicked through the link but there are no pets up for adoption when I search my local branch (I know this doesn't start until the weekend but I want to see in advance rather than waste my time driving there only to find out there are no pets up for adoption)?

Also, why are there Petbarn branches showing up? Are they part of the RSPCA or do they help the RSPCA care for the pets while the pets wait to be adopted?

    Thanks!

    • +6

There are ALWAYS dogs and cats available. (Because people suck)

      • Yeah that's what I was expecting, so I was shocked when the search said 0 results…

    • +2

Just rock up. The animals that are available to adopt will be in enclosures in a public viewing area.

Petbarn shows up because they allow RSPCA to have a few adoptable animals at each store. I've only seen cats at my local.

    See my vest…

    Staffie crosses for everybody!

Sounds like I might be getting a doggo.

  • If I didn't have allergies…

Will they price match rspca nsw?

  • +1
Actually NSW is having this too between 23-25 Feb.

Check the Adopt A Pet site for available animals.

    Please update OP.

I hope there are some checks on who is buying these animals. There are some horrible people out there.

    • There are going to be some terrible outcomes from this strategy. I don't doubt that at least for some in the organisation the aim is to help the animals and the hope is that it will be positive overall. (For others it will be all about PR and stats. That's the human race for you). But regardless:

      • People who can't afford to look after these pets will be tempted to buy them - because "only $29! I can afford that. I've always wanted one!"
      • Other people who may have looked after the pets better will miss out.
      • Others who might adopted at a different time may wait for "another sale" if they miss this one.
      • As you mentioned people may purchase the pets with less than noble intentions. As for checks, RSPCA staff are going to be flat out and corners will have to be cut no doubt.

Now watch as I get downvoted and/or ridiculed while almost no one addresses the issues. It's like a sport here.

Also for those tight on cash note that there are going to be other costs. Food and vet fees obviously but also you must register your dog or cat at your local council. That doesn't mean you shouldn't adopt. Just don't go in thinking the sticker price is the final cost to you.

  • Is $29 already included the desexing and microchipping services, vaccinations, behavioural and veterinary check?

Or do we need to pay extra $$ for that?

    • "Each adoption fee includes desexing and microchipping services, vaccinations, behavioural and veterinary checks."

      -——

Edit: I'll leave the rest of my post here but the pet expenses checklist here is much more thorough: https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/life-events-and-you/life-event…

      -——

      Other expenses include
      - Place for the pet to sleep
      - Fencing/containment if not already sorted
      - Accessories like food bowl (can be an old bowl but a non-spill purpose made pet bowl is better), hair brush, bedding, crate/kennel
      - Food
      - Toys

Also from personal experience if it's a dog count on it destroying a couple of things. How much they cost will depend on how much supervision/training you give the new pet and pot luck.

      Regular costs:
      - Food
      - Vet check (at least annual)
      - Meds - Worming/vaccination for a healthy animal

Possible unexpected costs depend on animal's health more than anything else. So almost entirely luck since you don't know the genetic line's history.

The NSW link is not working anymore, is RSPCA NSW still doing it?

    • That's sad. I worry it may have been Ozbargained. People signing up "just in case me or a mate want a pet" with no real intent to show up. RSPCA's limited resources that so many are fond of going off at me about can't cope with large numbers so may have decided to close registrations. It pushes out those who might genuinely own an animal.

Note that initial cost of the pet is a drop in the bucket compared to overall cost. If you genuinely wanted an animal, can commit and missed out on this, it's not unreasonable to go early and pay full price. from a selfish point of view you'll get a better selection. And it will also reduce the strain on their resources for the adoption days.

Ahh.. That's too bad 😟 yeah i know about the maintenance costs and ok with it. Thanks for the info!

        • You're welcome.

I registered last night when the page was still up. But I thought that the registrations was only for a chance to win 1 in 5 of that $100 online spend? Didn't realise it was actually for the adoptions too.

  • Found my other half!!! Thanks OP

  • Apparently, RSPCA Qld is also doing this, just saw a post on FB.

  • As Lou said above RSPCA QLD is also doing the $29 adoption this weekend.

  • Deal updated, appears it will be Australia wide apart from WA:

It’s expected to be a huge weekend, says RSPCA NSW spokeswoman Stefania Kubowicz, and will mark the organisation’s biggest adoption drive yet, with the campaign extending to all states except WA.

Have found and linked details for each state/territory apart from TAS which doesn't appear to have details (as yet at least).

    Edit 23/2: TAS not included.

    • Thanks, I'm from Vic so I didn't notice it was Aus wide! Cheers

    • Tasmania isn't a part of Australia. It's overseas.

  • Tasmania isn't part of Australia?

NSW link is broken, its missing an s on the end ie https://www.rspcansw.org.au/clear-the-shelters/

  • Aw why not WA?

  • +1
  • Is Tasmania included in this?

  • +2

Unfortunately they're all bogan breeds around my area. I check monthly and it's the same old shit breeds that bogans breed and discard.

Can we not just give the unwanted dogs and cats to the Chinese?

Better that the animal does not go unused.

    • That would be better were it a third world country hunger program joke.

      Cure world hunger.

  • These specials sound like a bad idea to me. A pet isn't something you usually need tight away, and if your planning to get one cheap you might just wait around for the special.

Meanwhile, while waiting, all the animals that would have been saved are now killed.

    • +1

I do need one "tight" away.. Pupil free day?

      • I HATE YOU!

        Runs away crying

  • +1

Damn wish Queensland would change our no rabbit laws.

    • Doubt it'll ever happen. Even if the petition is to allow only desexed and microchip buns, it's easier for them to just blanket ban all 🙄

  • why not WA

    • i have never seen RSCPA WA doing similar thing. That's suck..

  • Want some RSPCA chicken.
