Nintendo Switch Pokkén DX USB Controller (PC Compatible) $28 EB Games

160

The previous (Wii U) version of these controllers have proven popular due to the high quality D-Pad. The manufacturer, HORI has a reputation for producing quality 3rd party controllers.

This particular controller features:

  • Directional pad
  • Four face buttons (A, B, X, Y)
  • Two shoulder buttons (L, R)
  • Start and select buttons
  • Two extra buttons on the front next to the start button (ZL and ZR)

The controller connects via regular USB (USB A).

The only game that officially supports the controller is Pokkén Tournament DX, however in the previous deal TheDukeOfNukem reported success using the Wii U version of the controller with the following games on the Nintendo Switch:

  • Mario Kart 8. Works perfect.
  • Mr. Shifty. Works perfect.
  • Kamiko. Works perfect.
  • Shovel Knight. Works perfect.
  • Blaster Master: Zero. Works perfect.
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris. Works perfect.
  • Mighty Gunvolt Burst. Works perfect.
  • Over Top. Works perfect.
  • King of Fighters '98. Works perfect.
  • Rudymical. Works perfect.
  • Metal Slug 3. Works perfect.

So far I've tested the controller in Linux and it worked fine. I've also read of people successfully using the controller with Retropie on a Raspberry Pi, which is great because the controller is a good SNES controller shape.

If you live in Sydney, QLD or WA you might have luck finding the white or yellow Wii U version of the controller for only $9 (local pickup only)

No Analogue? That's not great for many games.

means it wont work with overcooked :(

      • +1

Is overcooked deliberately analogue to mess with me? Would live if it could dpad

    • +1

Hence the list of compatible games.

Anyone buying one of these would be getting it for d-pad orientated games (eg. platformers, fighters, retro gaming) or as a cheap multiplayer controller for games that don't require analogue sticks (eg. Puyo Puyo and MK8). They almost certainly have a controller with analogue sticks already.

(Particularly given the issues with the d-pad in the Switch Pro Controller.)

    • But it is great for most games released before 1996.

That's not meant to be smart btw. Just pointing out it is good for Retropie / Emulation etc.

  • how would i use this controller with switch ?

    • +2

Plug the USB cable into the USB port

    • +1

The dock has USB ports on it

  • I wonder if this would improve my performance as I'm rubbish at Pokken Tournament DX - I feel like I'm missing the point compared to how I play other fighting games.

  • On a side note can I just say I bought Pokken thinking it would be the ducks nutz. Played it for a week before I realised it's actually quite repetitive and boring…was disappointed considering the reviews.

    • I like pokemon and fighting games, absolutely loathe Pokken too.

Is the only difference between this and the wii U ones the extra L R buttons?

If anyone was interested, I called the Sydney store for the yellow one and they couldnt find it.

    • +1

Actually the Wii U version has the ZL and ZR buttons as well. The difference is the colour of the controller and the name of the game printed on the controller. Also the switch one is still in production while the Wii U one is only available if the store has old stock.

    Best suited for retropie emulation

    • Not without Analogue. You wont get proper PS & N64 emulation. Better off getting a $25 USB joypad from elsewhere for this purpose.

      • $25 USB joypad won't be built by Nintendo. For what that's worth to ya…

In my honest opinion, most early PS1 games won't need analogue. Plus I would not even try playing N64 on rpi3. This is perfect for any 8 and 16 bit console generation plus some PS1 plus most of the arcade games

Nothing wrong with running N64 on RPi3. It will play most games at very playable speeds. About the same level of compatibility to running PS games really.

@bchliu: playable does not mean 60 fps or no glitches

        • @bamsegod: The original consoles before HDMI were optimised for Analog Television interlaced 50/60hz (25/30 fps). This includes anything before PS3/XB360.
Glitches will always happen in Emulation since it will never be 100%.

  • It registers as a pro controller and functions as such. Any game that needs a joystick ain't gonna be fun.

Thing is great for pinball and platformers though. Now that there's so many third party remotes, and at reasonable prices too, I can't really recommend this unless it's something you really want. It's good at what it does, but a Horipad for 30 odd is a better deal, better yet, buy a Mayflash and use any controller you want.

If you can find a 9 buck one though, that shit is a steal.
