Pokken Tournament Pro Pad (Switch Compatible) $23 EB Games

270

Switch 3.0 update brings with it a number of cool features, including the ability to use your old Pokken Tournament controller on the new console.

I am quite aware that EB has sold these controllers at this price before, the reason I am posting is
1. They go for 50 and up on eBay.
2. EB are known to up their prices when stuff becomes relevant again, see backward compatible 360 game prices jump.

Obviously, having no joysticks limits the amount of games this is compatible with, though there are plenty that will run fine with this remote, don't do into this expecting things heavy on joystick and dpad use like Zelda to work because they won't. The remote also lacks the home and screenshot buttons found on the joy con and proper pro controller, but since this would just be a secondary controller, that shouldn't be a problem. The dpad has mixed reviews online, I personally find the thing to be great for Shovel Knight, Mighty Gunvolt, and the sort though.

Here's the games I have tested with the controller so far

Mario Kart 8. Works perfect.
Mr. Shifty. Works perfect.
Kamiko. Works perfect.
Shovel Knight. Works perfect.
Blaster Master: Zero. Works perfect.
Puyo Puyo Tetris. Works perfect.
Mighty Gunvolt Burst. Works perfect.
Over Top. Works perfect.
King of Fighters '98. Works perfect.
Rudymical. Works perfect.
Metal Slug 3. Works perfect.
Graceful Explosion Machine. Needs joysticks, can't use.
NBA Playgrounds. Needs joysticks, can't use.
Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Needs joysticks, can't use.
World of Goo. Needs pointers or touch screen, can't use.
Fast RMX. Needs joysticks, can't use.

Cheap way of getting a proper dpad on the Switch, cheap way to have 3 player seshes in Mario Kart and Tetris, and honestly it's just an all round nice feeling controller.

They have two flavours available, the plain Jane one for 23 bucks which looks nice

and the yellow AF Pikachu one which I ended up getting, which costs 28 bones

Stock may be low, so delivery is always an option, though their online store's stock check is bullshit, it says the nearest one in stock to me is 300 odd kilometres away, yet I just happened to pick one up by coincidence earlier today in store.

Edit: Just did a stock check online, and apparently the store down the road about 10 minutes away has the Pikachu one, but the closest plain one is nearly 600km away, in Tassie. So if you're gonna run into a shop, you might have more luck paying the 5 more, but if you're doing delivery, get the cheaper one and put that 5 toward the shipping.

may as well spend the extra $20 and get a 8bitdo controller with Bluetooth and joysticks from ebay

    • +2

I considered it, but I have enough Bluetooth controllers as it is, and this is at least an official controller, and since Pokken DX is coming to the Switch soon, I'd say support for it will last forever, meanwhile Nintendo might decide to be dicks and block 8bitdo some point down the line, which I wouldn't put beyond them. Only real reason I didn't instabuy one the second it was announced they'd work, the fear that one day they wouldn't

      • I own 2 8BitDo controllers that I use with my Switch. They're pretty good but tbh I should have bought a Pro, the DPad isn't crash hot on them and they don't seem to switch themselves off with the console.

        • My nes30 pro switches off automatically but not the nes 30

        • @supnigs super skids: I've got NesPro and FCPro, not sure if FC switches off but my NesPro won't :(

        • @Where's_That_Cake: that's weird. When you power on with y button it works and when you power off the switch the controller turns off with it on mine

        • @supnigs super skids: I'll have to re-try the FW update I guess

  • +1

+1 for extensive testing of games.

Hopefully someday soon DualShock 4 would be compatible, one can only wish.

  • +1 great post, very informative and thorough testing to help us all out.

Switch supports these but not GCN via WiiU adaptor? Rude.

    • They probably want to sell a similar adapter when Smash comes out for the switch?
Or maybe a wireless GCN-like controller?
      :(

  • Seems nice for those that have already this is, nice they can use for some backwards compatibility. Looks like they havent locked everything out from B/C.
Seems nice and cheap, somewhat non-essential, yet could be an interesting novelty item (perhaps for Pokken/Pokemon collectors), unnecessary kind of like the Pro controller. No real complaints for that price though. Nice one.

J.C.s are the bees knees. Might look at the inevitable Dpad joycons later when they release, but i dont see the need due to how flexible the current design is. Barely need the dock currently when using two loose. The thumbstick is somewhat tighter to allow for use with platformers on a single one, while the d-buttons are surprisingly comfortable for direction use when 2 are in use for single player.

Probably ideal for those that want an additional cheap controller for a 3 player game as stated.

  • Could be good for the inevitable SNES VC games, especially if you're subscribed to the online service anyway and get access to some VC games for free. The buttons are even labelled correctly and are all the right colours. If you're a SNES man and can wait for the slow drop feed of SNES VC on Switch then this will be good for you.

Though you may as well just get the Pro Controller because you'll want one eventually anyway.

  • Anyone can find em in stores, no luck in Perth
