i think once they offered lifetime map updates it extended the life of the gps …. garmin have been updating mine for 5 years …. in the old days you had to pay every 12 mths , or lifetime meant 2-3 years until model was no longer supported.

In the old days… before Google and Apple maps. I'm surprised GPS units are still relevant. Both maps applications will work on the lowliest of smartphones.

Like the relevance of yellow pages…

You are correct for cities, however in our country there is an entire area with no mobile connectivity to get the google maps work. A proper GPS unit is a way to go.

        • and in the CBD, dash mounted GPS is next to useless.

        • Unless of course you download the maps. Downside is that you have to refresh them every 30 days or so.

        • use here map, it has offline navigation

Agreed. Super useful when I drove from Broome to Darwin. Also I find proper GPS units seems to be way more heat tolerant than my phone (especially when charging)

Dunno, my Garmin works pretty alright in Brissie CBD. It does have a traffic attachment though.

@crumbo85: Google Maps will refresh your saved map area automatically.

but smartphones only work for a whisper of time before their battery is flat

        • It's a good thing someone invented car chargers - heard of them?

        • +1

Pretty much any smartphone battery lasts way longer than any gps unit battery

        • @steff:

I'm one of the fortunate ones who have the phone mounted in front of my ac vent in a Qi QC dock, but I can imagine some punters may not like how GPS software on mobile phones aggressively chews through battery, and their chargers may not be able to keep up with the usage, or the heat coming through.

        • @kwchaz: Nowadays almost all (relatively) new phones have fast charging in some form.

If the phone doesn't have fast charging, a high output charger will work just fine (something like a 2.0A or higher output).

Agree with you on the heating though, but like you've got it, mounting it near the A/C vent will help.

I still love having a separate GPS device because the phone can do, you know, phone stuff

  • Is navman still windows CE based?
