Road Bike for Daily Commute

Hi all,

Looking to purchase a bike to ride to work and uni - something that I can ride for daily commutes as well as some longer rides. I am 180cm tall

I saw a recommendation by Jake Elwood for the Bianchi Impulso which is $1230 on ebay using PICK5

https://www.pushys.com.au/bianchi-impulso-disc-105-11sp-road…

My budget is <$1500, including pedals. Not fussed about current model but should have newer tech that make it enjoyable to ride. I do not yet know what to watch out for when it comes to buying second hand bikes, so preferably new for the first one until I know what I like.

Thank you!

  • Just make sure you get the right size if you are buying online. The Bianchi you listed only comes in a 57cm - so you'd want to make sure you aren't short.

If you want a road bike I would suggest have a look at the Giant Contend range….If you don't want Disc brakes you can pick up a Contend for like 900 bucks - Go in store and you might be able to pick up last years model with disc brakes for around $1000 if you are lucky to find it in your size.

The Contend range are an Endurance style road bike so you will be sitting a bit more upright than your standard road bike which if you are new to cycling is probably better just to save your back and also to let you look up a bit easier when commuting.

    • Thanks Fergy. I will take a look at Giant. I am 180cm tall so I think 57 would suit well.

What is stopping you from going to a store and trying out the sizes there first?

        • Will pop in. Are these sizes interchangeable between brands?

        • @hj0809:

Not really, it is usually even different between different models with the same brand too.

  • With bikes nothing beats going in and trying a few side by side sometimes the physical geometry suits one person more than others.

Giant do some good sales and you can pick up a better bang for your buck higher spec equipment than on the equivalent competitors bike.

I've had mates at work buy the giant just because it was cheaper than buying the upgraded gear-set etc. for their current bike. and swapped them over.

Some of the equipment can cost more than the whole bike

The old or in many cases last seasons colorway are generally on sale now or soon if not already as they tend get rid of them before the European race season starts when the top riders are given their new rides for the year.

Don't forget to get a basket (save your back, rather than wearing a backpack), and a gel seat cover

Or the 1985 style large fluoro orange flag on a stick attached to the seat stays, not to mention a kick stand!

  • Solely looking at the two you've posted, definitely the Bianchi. Not only is a cheaper, but it appears to have a better spec than the Cannondale (Shimano 105 vs Tiagra).

  • My recommendation is to go for an alloy frame. I've had two carbon frame damaged by others at work, one knocking over a bike, and one bashing into it. Alloy is a lot more resilient\forgiving.

My current commuter is a FELT F85 - not this exact model but close https://www.bikeradar.com/au/gear/category/bikes/road/produc…

Might be time for an upgrade myself :-)
