Considering a short break in March.
Seeking any special offers / discounts, that any may know for the "Spirit of Tasmania" ferry service, and general travel in Tassie.
Have RACV membership (10% off $736 return journey including day cabin once for 2, reduces this to $682 … less $54, [not exactly 10%] … for return journey and taking car on both journeys) … but wish to take our newer (more reliable) car that is not included in RACV membership.
YOUI Insurance membership offers road service with both vehicles, which is why not opted for new vehicle.
Have Victoria Carer Card also but does not appear to offer any travel discounts for this ferry or other attractions that we are aware of in Tasmania.
Any suggestions?
We don't know much at all about Tasmania … other than visiting some devils!
Thank you for reading.
Any Special Offers for "Spirit of Tasmania" Ferry

That's ok don't worry about it

Cheaper to just take a flight and hire a car there.
Yes, but we wish to try the ferry just the one time. Car hire would also cost more than the $198 ($89 & $109 … don't know why one way cost more than the other!) it costs to take a vehicle over and back again. Actually it is more convenient for us to take our car to the ferry than head out to the airport here in Melbourne (parking, luggage, etc.). Shall find out tomorrow how much extra cost for RACV to include the newer vehicle (or perhaps switch the cover on the cars).
Managed the RACV discount without changing the membership to our other vehicle (can use any vehicle). Apparently 10% discount uses your name to work. Booking went through fine after I was advised to leave membership number off.
Only thing left to do now is to work out where we are going for the 8 days & 2 days travelling. Even booked a porthole cabin for the cruise home; imagine I will be tuckered. 😴
Unless you have a lot of luggage
Yes, well we do have a bit and don't like to skimp or bother too much with laundry duties when on hols. I have had a few back ops so would be much easier for me to live out of the boot of my car really. We plan on travelling / moving every day. Mostly going by ferry for the experience and convenience. It's weird but the car hire places don't operate at 7pm+ to meet the incoming ferry. Would mean a taxi ride to the closest car hire.
Take the plane and hire a car.
Also beware of the devils if they start to spin, they will destroy anything that gets in their path.
I shall take your advice on that lol! Any suggestions on where to go or visit? Say a wildlife park to meet your little devil cousins, something different? Only state I have never visited (lived in FNQ and top north end for a decade or so) … I know; Melb was a culture shocker to return to. Not into casinos.
I sign up to their mailing list. They have some great deals, and don't spam-flood you. Other than occasional specials, there's a bit of a sliding scale where the earlier you book the cheaper you get it. Since it's a seasonal destination, they are pretty keen to discount in order to entice people over during the colder months.
Yes, have done this also. They even have sailings on Good Friday which I thought handy. We tend to avoid school holidays and Easter, so was surprised to see some vacancies then.
JediJan, I suggest you start with the “Discover Tasmania” website.
https://www.discovertasmania.com.au/
The site contains information such as drive times, self drive itineraries, National Parks etc.
If you have any particular questions, just ask.
Phyph.
Thank you Phyph for the link; much appreciated.👍 Will most definitely check it out. Tasmania is the only state I have yet to visit, although I have lived in Victoria most of my life. I am a bit surprised the ferry will take so long (11 1/2 hours each way). I guess I have never really considered the distance before!
Or you could try a melbourne to launceston/hobart camper relocation for $1 to $5 a day. you get 1 ticket for you and the car free (booked by the rental company) plus some fuel and a few days to get to the drop off city. keep an eye on these sites for when the deals go up in the mornings. catch is its generally short notice within the week which means you would need to then pay for a relatively short notice flight. but with a budget airline wouldn't be too much and the savings would be worth it.

https://www.imoova.com/imoova/relocationsI have heard of these sites before; returning rentals to point of origin. Probably suit semi-retireds that can be more flexible with their time; great idea.
Did think it was peculiar but did not locate one hire company online that was open to meet the ferry at Devonport. Would have thought that would have been prime time to gind some customers.
I have booked us (and vehicle), using RACV discount, on the ferry now; looking forward to the experience. ☺
Hi Jedi, did they check your membership when you checked in?
Hi Richie
3 years ago now, but I don't recall ever being asked for RACV membership. We queued up early at the ferry terminal and it seemed a very long wait as it left late. Was a particularly rough trip over and many were suffering seasickness. I suggest ask your doctor for a medication prescription to take for it. What the chemist gave us was pretty useless. The tourist park is only 5 minutes down the road, on the beach, from the ferry terminal at Davenport. Highly suggest; one of the best we have ever stayed at. Ferry arrived late due to heavy swells but the manager at the tourist park was aware and met a few of us at their office.
unsure sorry
