Possible Fake Seikos from recent eBay deal

So I went ahead and bought a Seiko SRPA71 from ebay seller ioomobile, from the deals listed here. It turned up today, however I'm fairly confident it's fake, albeit a good one. Has anyone else received theirs? The things that make me believe it is fake are that it says "Made in Japan" on the dial, which this model does not have and apparently is a common mistake on fake Seikos. It also did not come with any manual/instructions/authenticity certificate, which my other Seiko I bought from a shop did. It also has fairly a badly aligned engraving for the serial number. The seller however has a huge amount of almost flawless feedback (99.9% of 45000 sales or something). So I'm wondering what other people think of theirs, and what to do to prove it's a fake to PayPal.

BTW I have never posted here before so I apologise if I've done something wrong or posted in the wrong place :)

EDIT: PICS HERE
Face - doing some more research, its a SRPA71J1, the J1 indicating made in Japan, so perhaps this is not an indication of being fake - reading watchuseek and other sites it's a bit confusing as to whether "Made in Japan" on the dial is a good thing or not.
Case Back - the serial number is just a bit too big for the surface it's on, and looks a little wonky.

The thing that makes me more suspicious than anything though is that it came with no booklet or guarantee certificate - which all new Seikos come with.

Sounds like it is a dud to me, but I'm not an expert. I would ask the seller for the certificate and, if he can't provide one, then tell him you are going into dispute about this. He will, probably, just quietly give you your money back.

Take it in to a watch shop that sells the same watch and compare it.

Or better, go to an authorized seller and get them to confirm whether it is real or not. If fake then get a letter from them as supporting proof for your paypal claim.

    • This sounds like the best course of action, it's a bit of a niche watch in their range so I doubt any dealers nearby will have it but I think I will take it in and see if they think it's genuine. Thanks.

take it to reputable jeweler and have them check for you to be sure to be sure.

some people buy stuff not even knowing it's fake and just accept it.

get it looked at by a professional.

  • Try contacting Seiko Australia directly to confirm?
They have a service centre in the Melb CBD or try to get in touch with them via FB or other social media means

i get the feeling that that may be a real J1

if its a K1 (ie. Korea) it wont say made in japan

Yes, you can see the straight serial number at 41 sec on the youtube clip.

I think most enthusiasts know that sub $500 seikos have really variiable quality and if your beef is with a straight serial number then you have little to complain about because SKX owners and even bloody SARB model owners have had much worse quality issues than just a crooked serial.

        • My Seiko Turtle came with a dust spec and two hairs in separate locations under the dial. Everything is aligned though. SKX is spot on.

  • The thing that makes me more suspicious than anything though is that it came with no booklet or guarantee certificate - which all new Seikos come with.

That eBay listing says 'New'. It clearly does not say 'New with Tags'.

    Hi @sparna,

I've been consulting my pet Goldfish, Harriet, and she's persuaded me that no replicas exist of that particular model since it's cheap (there's no interest in reproducing it).

There being no tags is as expected, as noted by @PJC.

You may well be relatively new to these watches generally, but the folk posting watch deals here are very experienced and well adept at dodging what fakes there are out there.

EDIT: Oh i see @ilikeit has come in with some pretty persuasive evidence that you're OK. Your watch is fine, and awesome price BTW…

This post should be marked as resolved.

yeah pretty much, the dial looks spot on to me

the back has a few minor quality issues but i expect that in a $500 seiko so i certainly am not disappointed in one that is half the price
