Should I Wash My Car?

Hi all,

Recently bought a car (yes yes, laugh at me, I'm the AMG kid)

Getting my car washed professionally fort he first time.

I planned on getting it washed tomorrow, but the forecast looks like it may rain in Sydney throughout the week.

Do you think it's a waste to pay so much for a full detail only to have water/rain marks, and polished wash off potentially, a few days later because of rain?

Should I Wash my car?

Yes, just wash it - it isn't feasible to keep waiting for it to "not rain"
  • 185
No, it's a waste of money. Wait till the weather is clear for at least 5-7 days after the wash

What qualifications are required to become a professional car washer?

Wash it yourself every week. Teach yourself how to wash a car properly and you'll get the best result.

I would only ever pay someone else to do it if I physically could not do it myself. The vast majority of us can wash the car.

    • +1

You need to join a professional car washing organisation to get professional statue. Most backyard washers are not certified or experienced enough, I would not trust your backyard cowboys washing your car with water and a sponge.

Would you walk into a Bunnings, buy some light bulbs then risk changing them yourself instead of calling a sparky???? then why would you consider walking into a Bunnings, buying soap and a sponge then risk washing it yourself?

      • So what course is needed to be completed before becoming a professional?

How many days of study is required?

I have seen weekend courses called "Car Detailing" over 1 weekend which teaches not much more than a bit of internet browsing and talking with your friends. It isn't a certification though.

you need to start at traffic lights with a squeegee, we journey men call this an unsupervised apprenticeship, work you way up from there.

I'd upvote this more if I could

I got my helicopter about the same time you got your amg, so would also like to know if it's worth getting it professionally washed or just do it myself.

    • -7

Why are you lying just to compete with me? Please don't be that insecure.

Learn to live and let live.

    • +1

Dude. Just fly your helicopter into a storm. That's what I do when my jet needs a wash. Actually, I just get one of the help to do it for me.

  • You sometimes find questions of such earth-shattering importance on OzB!

And this guy really does plumb the depths.

I can see, in a couple of weeks - "Could someone please tell me which socks I should wear today??"

    • +2

Then don’t go look at his post history. It's only a matter of time for the socks post to come out.

    • -1

I literally do not see one thing wrong with asking: should I wash my car today knowing it's going to rain tomorrow oris that silly and a waste of money?

      • It's definitely silly, and you shouldn't need to ask questions that obvious. Rain leaves marks and dirt, undoing your wash.

Look at the forecast for the week and decide accordingly.

hi guys, just thought i would comment as today i got a good deal on some enloops

Coming up next week…. I rear ended another car whilst I was tailgating in my AMG…should I say they reversed into me?

    • dont forget, OP tailgates, while in reverse…on the freeway. because AMG.

    • Next thread is more like,

"I was tailgating someone in my powerful AMG on the highway at 70km/h and I rear-ended them when they braked but my adaptive braking system didn't do what it was supposed to. Is it my fault? Should I contact Mercedes to make them pay for the damages to both cars?"

    • Someone tried that against me once.

  • Even on a nice clear day your car will get dirty in Sydney

    • Can always polish and wax the car. Rain water washes most the dirt off.

    • -1

      Yeah true point

  • +1

get out! don't come back to this playground.

  • Get your mum and dad to pay for the wash

    • -4

Get your mum and d…oh wait, sorry.

My man's on a rampage. Damn.

        • -3

Haha just had a very long day at work! Just winding down reading a bunch of comments and leaving some replies if I come up with any good ones haha - thanks for noticing though.

  • +6

Should just rename this thread 'unistudent1 Roast Session'.

    • +8

      'unistudent1 Roast Session'

      It's self-inflicted!

He's probably showing everyone this thread going "these people are just jealous".

      • +1

He would be frothing at the bung because he can’t reply. People like him can help but reply and continue to troll He was put in the box for making personal attack comments. Look over his other posts and it’s the same smart-arse comments, it was only going to end one way.

I’m banking on him coming in here after penalty box time out and making lots and lots of arsehat comments replying to people only to end up back in the box.

    • Hahaha! Do you honestly reckon I deserve it?

      • +4

        Yep.

I called it. Out of the penalty box for 10 mins and made 30 replies in this thread already…

        • Actually you did. And I was quite impressed. I read your comment whilst I was in penalty, and I remember thinking "DAMN!" HE Really really spends a lot of his time thinking about my life.

Edit: I regret being unnecessarily rude. Edited my comment and removed the filth.

        • +2

@unistudent1: I’ll miss you when you go back into the penalty box. These threads are way more tragic when you’re allowed near a functional keyboard and a working account.

Can’t wait for your next post to see what question you will ask next… if your account lasts that long, that is…

        • -1

          @pegaxs:

Why would you threaten me with the penalty box after I literally just edited my comment to be more appropriate?

          I'm confused.

        • +1

@unistudent1: I’m not a mod or a super user, how can I threaten you with more penalty box time?

I am merely stating that firing off 30+ replies to troll more people into engaging you and making inappropriate remarks and considering your current account status and being “recently out of the box”, you are doing a great job of putting yourself back in there.

Instead of coming on here 2 seconds after your box was opened and spraying off like a petulant child, maybe you should have had time to reassess your contribution to this community and been a little more humble by your penalty boxing.

You know, or just carry on being the troll you are. :) either way is a win / win for me.

"professionally" washed by the duco butchers at the local drive thru.

  • Easy guys, I love this kid he makes me like a well adjusted human capable of adult decision making.
Also from what I know of uni students these days owning a penis extending car would be more ostracizing than not drinking organic fair trade coffee.

  • If you want to get your car detailed, get it detailed. Reality is, your care is always going to get dirty shortly after, whether it's rain, dust, or even bird droppings. Your rims, etc, will still look like they've just been cleaned though!

I'd recommend your wash your car by hand, then get it detailed every few months. I think you'll find the detailing will help with the interior more than the exterior. If you want to make your car a bit easier to wash on the outside, you might also want to consider paint protection (if you don't already have it).

    • Thanks for the advice. I was given the advice to get a full detail once a year and thorough exterior wash and wipe at least once every 2 months.

      Thanks for the tips though.

  • Washing cars is severely overrated. They just get dirty again

    • They just get dirty again

      Do you shower? :)

      • It hasn't stopped a certain demographic from not doing it.

        • pleeeeeease, enlighten me….. haha :D

        • @bobbified: not sure if you have ever caught public transport or if the state of public transport is in melbourne is similar. Here in sydney if you ever catch the train a great number of the unwashed get on. Which is just lovely during summer time. 😂😂😂

        • @xoom:

There's more than plenty of that here too! The non-airconditioned trams are pretty bad! wheeeeeeeeeew! haha

  • 0/10

  • A professional wash/detail (I don't mean paying the local corner 'hand wash' an extra $10 to 'wax' your car with a dirty rag) is more about protection than just looking good.

Wash removes dirt, polish is like sandpaper to remove swirl marks/small scratches, and wax/sealant is to put a layer of protection over the top of the paint so those swirls/scratches don't happen again.

So yes, in that sense, get your car detailed regardless of what the weather is doing. A clean, waxed car just means rain has a less lasting impact - Water just runs right off.

    • Suspect they are getting a full detail which runs $250 - $500.

      • Yup the RRP was advertised at the $500 mark, but I purchased for under $100 thanks to Ozb!

        • It takes hours to properly wash and detail a car - Paying $100 is a terrible idea. Who is offering that deal ?

Probably a false economy - Taking your brand new Mercedes to a place that won't give a (profanity) because they're being paid nothing, granted you won't notice how bad of a job they do based on your post history.

        • +2

@sovereign01: old saying… you get what you paid for… got his A200 cheap, now wants to treat it to cheap car washes.

Next post; car detailer scratched my car, what do now?

  • is it possible to get a mod and ban this guy?

    • For what?

      • +4

something related to poisoning the culture of the ozbargain community

        • -1

He's asking if he should spend money on detailing his car or wash it himself. There are far worse conversations in the forum than this one.

        • @TailsK: Looking through his posts. He's not looking for an answer/help…

        • @Oz8argain: another poser who has successfully trolled this forum

        • @TailsK:
My question was whether or not it's a silly decision to wash a car, knowing it's likely to rain in the next couple days.

        • @unistudent1: There should be a word in this language that describes a self answering question…

        • +1

@unistudent1: how did you qualify for univeristy again?

    • +1

      Build a wall?

  • +12

I feel really sorry for anybody who knows you in real life.

  • What makes a car cleaner a professional?

    • They charge x4 as much. Some are worth that, I had a mate just out of high school that worked at one and they spent a long time doing the interiors and came out looking amazing, like new (just dont expect to get your gold coins back that were wedged between the seats). However there are many that just charge X4 for the same old crappy once over that you could do better with a cloth and bucket.

      • So essentially someone who gives a s#$t about the outcome

    • Do it as a profession (for a living)

      • +3

That doesn’t make someone a professional. Just like all the stickers in the world won’t change your car from an econobox to an AMG. (I know you’re trolling, no one is that stupid).

  • +7

    I'm the AMG kid

    No you're not.

    • +4

Self imposed nickname… certainly not the one the rest of the community knows him by… :D

  • I would only was my car if I had such a High Yield Investment… Professionals arent gunna care as much as you..

  • lol

Need help tying my shoes, please recommend a shoe tying robot or professional shoe tying service? OZB help I need attention!!

    • +1

Thinking of paying someone to tie my shoes, but I may want to take them off later…

But don’t forget to mention that you have an expensive pair of shoes with all the bells and whistles. And tell everyone how you can get a really nice, high end bow tied in your laces but get it cheaper than what a professional shoe lace guy would do it for…

      • You LITERALLY HAVE MEMORIZED my past threads hahahahahahahahahahahahhaah

    • -1

Hey don't hi jack my post!! Make your own !!

  • Thought this was a serious question, was going to give a serious answer.

    But nah.

  • You remind me of the blond girl having video conferencing with her friend during her quiz test in Jumanji

    Are you allergic to cakes?

  • why is he not in penalty box for trolling? He was and talked his way out of it?

    • -1

I was in the penalty box for making a rude remark at someone.

In my defence, their remark was also Ill intended.

But I accept responsibility. And I'm sorry.

  • +3

Should I brush my teeth? I have applied toothpaste on the brush, but I just remembered there's chocolate cake in the fridge.

    • -1

Hey!!! Get your own thread - stop hijacking mine!

  • +3

Do you know how to make a decision without asking the Internet?

    This is a serious question.

  • I wash my car myself and much better than professionals. Yes, it takes time. I spent almost 8 days washing it. Washed 4-5 times, wax the whole car including windows, windscreen and head lights and cleaned interiors, clay bar the whole car, shined the headlamps with toothpaste.
Watch this and save your money. But you need to invest around $150 in buying some products which will last a long time.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFXfSBR5Q9w

    • Thanks bro!

    • Save money but not save time. Depending on how much they charge, if it's reasonable I'd rather pay than take 8 days washing it. Everyone puts a different price on their leisure time, but mine is actually quite high despite not being a high income earner. And not even because I necessarily have things to do with my time. I'd just rather not do washing, for the same reason I'd rather not do gardening or mowing. I pay people to do that, even if I could do it in the same amount of time. I just don't like doing that kind of thing.

  • What does amgeee kid do when a real v8 amg lines up next to him. Does he shrink into his seat, too embarrassed to show his face?

    • -1

No. I drive the car at the 60km/h speed limit, same as the real V8 AMG.

What would you do if you were the real one?

      • Know when/where there are and aren't speed cameras, and drive accordingly.

      • hi amgeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee kid.

is that because your fake amg struggles to get above 60kph?

      • Said no amg driver ever!

  • +4

Why do you post on here?

  • Get a sense of humour OP, it will do you good, your wit and intellect can impress people much more than any car ever would.

  • +3

Do you think I should wash my SR-71 Blackbird that I just bought the other day?

I am not really concerned about the fuel efficiency and running costs but saving a few bucks on something like washing makes sense.

    • +2

As a kid I remembered how badass those things looked.

This was the second Sega Master System game I owned and I fell in love with this jet. Sadly it was a recon jet and had no weapons, so wasn't the best choice to put on the cover of a game (they actually show it dropping bombs which is false, and also the craft does not appear in the game anywhere — your plane is a WW2 style plane which makes no sense at all in context). But it sure looked like a sick fighter or bomber!

    • +1

But what if it was going to rain? Should you still wash it?

      • Too true. Even though it leaks fuel at ground level I would rather let nature do it for free.

  • +7

As with your previous post, congrats on your new car as A200 is a lovely car. Since your car is not an AMG, get some Nismo or TRD stickers to make up for it. Make sure that you wash it only with AMG approved detergents.
