If you can wait, it might be worth waiting a bit longer. It was $483 at VideoPro just 3 weeks ago.

They were actually selling it $473 a few days ago, based on history, but have since jacked up the price. Probably best wait till the next sale.

  • Waiting for a deal equal to the VideoPro deal - seems with all the problems, grain and weird codec it records in for high res, anywhere north of $500 is too much in my opinion

weird codec it records in for high res

Better get used to it, H.265 is the future!
      It's only for 4K60 though, 4K30 is still H.264.

With Apple joining AOMedia, I'd say AV1 is the future, and HEVC will die out outside TV broadcasting in the next 3 to 5 years.
HEVC never gained widespread popularity due to its insane patent hurdle. Now with AV1 bitstream freezing in sight, we can expect Google and Netflix adoption by Q3, Hulu, Amazon and Apple will follow the suit, and hardware decoder by the end of 2019.

        • Well hopefully that happens, since no licencing fees means things could be slightly cheaper.

If you look at the past though, you'd think that everyone would have flocked to VP8 being open-source and free to use since 2009. But H.264 thrived anyway, probably because it was already established.

Right now, H.265 already has a foothold, being in Sony smart TVs since at least 2014, and in cameras like the GP6 and Panasonic GH5, and even CCTV cameras.

        • @eug:

VP8 didn't have industry backing outside Google, VP9 had very limited support, and I'd say not counting Apple, VP9 is supported on just about everything that supports HEVC. So foothold-wise, HEVC is not much better than VP9.
As for the "free" claim, VP8/9 has had patent challengers (subsequently lost to Google in court), so at the beginning being "free" wasn't enough,it didn't mean you are protected from patent trolls. So on the contrary, only ill-informed people would think people are flocking to VP8. Patent trolls have the audacity to challenge Google, imagine what they would do to a small company.

Its counterpart, H264/AVC didn't have insane patent policy, you can get the licence from ONE patent pool at reasonable price while HEVC has at least 3 patent pools.

So the market went the safe route, and rightfully so.
With HEVC, that's an entirely different matter. HEVC can't be licensed easily and cheaply, that's why NONE of the major streaming services use it widely. AV1 has
Guaranteed usage from YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, now Apple
Guaranteed software support from Google Microsoft Apple Mozilla, that's almost 100% of the browsers and 100% mobile OS mind you.
Guaranteed hardware support from Intel ARM AMD, that's 100% PC and mobile
And MOST IMPORTANTLY, PATENT GUARANTEE from ALL of the above plus BBC Cisco etc.

VP9 had none of the above BTW.

HEVC hasn't got its shit together by last year, then it has missed its only chance. Apple is just the last nail.

        • @levizx: So why did GoPro and Panasonic choose H.265?

        • @eug:
Other that it happens to be there, there's no reason. The important question is why DIDN'T other vendors choose it?
Even GoPro held out until it had NO choice with 4K60. HEVC hardware encoder has been available for YEARS.

Besides, action cams are CONSUMER parts, and a niche market no less. They can afford to add a few $ in the price tag. And probably will be amongst the last to switch.

        • @levizx:

Other that it happens to be there, there's no reason.

So Panasonic and GoPro decided to pay royalties … for no reason? With all the benefits you've highlighted, why would they increase the cost of the product by going with H.265?

The important question is why DIDN'T other vendors choose it?

Because their own codecs serve their cameras' capture specs fine so far. But now as more cameras move towards 4K60 capture, new codecs are needed to keep data rates in check.

Besides, action cams are CONSUMER parts. They can afford to add a few $ in the price tag.

Hm? Consumers are far more price-sensitive than professionals. Companies will always strive to keep prices low to be competitive. The professional market is completely different - they're not as price-sensitive, they just want things that work.

I'd go for the Sony FSR X3000 if your looking to get one of these cameras. Superior image quality and far superior image stabilization for around the same price!

Thx got one, sad I missed the other sales but this will do for my upcoming trip. Similar to US price after exchange rate conversion.
