Samsung 82" UA82MU7000 $4949.99 (Was $6949.99) @ Costco (Membership Required)

640

This seemed like a big discount. Way to big for my place.
It is 5999 at binglee
And appliance online seems to have forgotten that they are suppose to be a cheap online store.

Hope this helps someone with the space and $$.

7 inches bigger than mine. That's what the ladies keep telling me anyway.

    • +4

You have 75", so quit complaining!

      • +9

his not… she is.. ;) hahahaha

  • i wish i had a costco..

If you know someone that does, tag along with them.

You'd need to use them for warranty issues, though.

I think he means he wishes he had a Costco where he lives.

      • +3

Yes , lets down vote him for misunderstanding his comment

      • +1

I actually have a Costco close and I think they are generally more expensive than buying items on sale at Coles or Woolworths. I just stock up when sales are on and get things much cheaper than Costco's everyday prices.

        • +2

Costco is not useful for foods for small families. We have membership but rarely buys food from there. And if we buy from there then some of them goes in bin. They have bulk food that you won't use in time. It is better to buy fresh in small quantities from local shop then wasting food & money.
They are not cheaper always before you buy do some research you may find cheaper somewhere.

        • Well worth it for fuel though. Pays the cost of the membership off quickly.

      • +6

He said nothing about a membership.

I wish I had a five thousand dollars.

    • Can’t blame ya. The deeds to the company wouldn’t be cheap

  • +2

go oled or bigger size ?

    size matters more, i guess

    • Hmm that's hard to say. I had a similar choice a while ago when I got my 65" Panasonic OLED. Have you seen an OLED in action before? It's incredible. I could have gotten a 75" TV but at the end of the day the colours and technology in the OLED were more future proof.

    • +15

Depends what you're watching. If mainly blurays then oled. If it's just normal MKR crap then get a 100" ssanyong

    • -1

I'm pretty picky for colours and black levels - but OLED burn in is meant to be pretty bad, even on the latest models. All fine if you casually use it but if you're an 8 hour a day gamer and some new slick game comes out, bam HUD burn in :/

I'm sticking with the 65" Plasma as long as possible.
If my TV went bang, right now? I'd definitely, regrettably, go for big, dumb, cheap over OLED, they either fix the burn in or we wait for (yet again) the next big thing.

Also, I've got 65" now! So my next TV better be at least 80"

      • +3

Your concerns for oled burn in are pretty much a non issue if you ask me. Had one for a year now after my Samsung f8500 plasma packed it in. Both techs have image retention issues which is very different to burn in. If you leave a static picture on the screen for 10 mins then you’ll see some retention. Play something else on it afterwards for about 30 secs and it completely disappears. I had similar “issue” with my plasma but overall it’s not a problem. People beat it up more than it’s worth. And if that’s the trade off for the best black levels you’ll see in a tv then it’s worth it IMO

        • @hamwhisperer: seriously? Everyone is different I guess but if you are worried about a Rtings test on static logo’s that have been left on for 20hrs a day for months on end then you watch way too much tv. I mean, who does that? Even with gaming you end up with cut scenes, multiplayer menus between games etc etc. This is extreme level testing that most likely 99.999999% of people would simply never use a tv for. I watch a heap of Netflix, ps3, xbone and I have a pc hooked up to my tv. The only time I really see any retention is when I have the computer desktop open for a bit too long (ie: 15 mins+). Once I switch to another source the retention is gone in less than a minute and it’s not even that noticeable in the first place

        • @B Wat: Read my original post, I'm a gamer.

I hate LCD, but I hate burn in.

        • +2

          @hamwhisperer:

I'm a gamer too. Between wife and I we play about 4 hours of Xbox a day on the OLED. Been doing so for over 3 years now without any issues. Between gaming sessions we watch a couple movies/shows and it removes the IR. Just gotta mix the content up a little is all.

By the way OLEDs low input lag, fast response and superb contrast makes it amazing for gaming. Highly recommend it.

        • @Ryballs: don’t think this one can be convinced Ryballs

        • -6

@B Wat: I'd love OLED, if it was cheap, I wouldn't care, at that price, with my compulsive gaming…. It's a risk.

Also lol at 4 hour gaming sessions :(
I put through 16 solid when gtav shipped

        • @Ryballs:

Where do I get a wife that plays Xbox 4 hours a day? Just asking for a friend.

        • @UFO: @Ryballs, although he may have issues with that…

    • OLED is better but size matters with room size & how far you sit. compare os like android tv, webos, Tizen etc and response time for channel switching etc

Does this qualify for GST tax refund for overseas travel?

    • +11

Well they might think it's suspicious you fit an 82" TV in your luggage.

    • +2

You have to take it with you to claim a refund so I doubt you'd be able to do it if it was actually possible.

      • +9

        "That's the joke"

        • Oops! Not enough sleep makes the brain malfunction.

    • If you carry on a business you can ship this off overseas and claim GST back

      • If you purchase something as a business expense, you claim GST back anyway…

        • But roughly 10 percent of the proceeds due to you at the time of selling it off will need to be given to the government as GST collected, unless the buyer is overseas.

    • You can claim GST back but only if you put it in overhead compartment in flight.

I thought AO do a price beat, Could anyone confirm?

    • +1

      "Price Matching

If you find one of our products cheaper with any other Australian retailer, we promise to match it. Just make a note of the price and where you have found it, and then give us a call on the following number: 1300 000 500"

    • I tried to do a price beat with AO a couple of years ago, and they refused as it 'was below their cost price'.

I couldn't be bothered arguing the point about their price promise, but they lost me as a customer from that day.

      • -1

You're kidding yourself if you think a company will sell you something for a loss. I work at an appliance store myself so I can understand. You have to remember you are only speaking to an employee who have company limits for profit margins, not a charity.

        • If a company is going to commit to an offer of "promise to match any price" then they need to accept there maybe occasions where this will mean they may make a loss on a small portion of sales. Overall the campaign should make a profit and wont result in any disgruntled customers. Companies need to understand that a disgruntled customer can be more damaging to a company than one sale at a loss.

In my particular case the price match wasn't unreasonable, there were a number of other retailers selling less than AO.

        • +1

          @T1:

If a company is offering a lower price why not buy from them instead? They've gone to the trouble of trying to get your attention by lowering the price.

Not all the companies get the same buying deal, believe me I know. The place I work at can barely match AppliancesOnline prices. Just because a certain retailer has it cheap doesn't mean that the other retailer will have it cheap as well. They could have bought it in bulk, they may have a sell through going on. I'm by no means an AO fan but there are so many factors you might not understand.

Additionally, you said you asked them to price beat, not price match which is quite different.

    • +4

AO have gone to crap lately.

Never seem to offer the cheapest prices (only via price matching).

Previously they were often the cheapest and price match being needed was very rare.

They switched to Aus Post for smaller items rather than using their own trucks - which meant deliveries were much worse and you couldn't book down to the day (or often next day).

Also there is usually no reason to use them any more as price matching (esp smaller items) offer no benefit over using a standard retailer.

Years ago I would have recommended them to everyone - today there is no reason to use them at all.

  • +2

had this since last 5 months, Nice display of blacks, almost looks like OLED. Only think i hated it the Appstore has no games for this model, only snake and some stupid games, it has streamlink but i don't have a Xbox or PC at home
bought it for $7000 from jbhifi :(

    • +9

You don't have a PC at home? Do you live in a Yurt in outer Mongolia?

    • I find it crazy that you've spent 11k on TV's in the past 12 months!

      • He budgeted for $20K, so he's happy!

    • lol go back and demand they throw in a console since damn things dropped in price … hehe

    • +2

You spent 7k and you want better games????

If you spent that much then $250 more could of got you an Xbox with hell of a lot of games and better ones too then the Samsung games

        • grammar nazi

  • I have a really bright area at home, lots of light.

Maybe a silly question but: will OLED be too dim?

Which tech is typically the brightest ?

Like TV versus near direct SUN

    • -2

Definitely OLED. OLED basically has it's own light emission, LED relies on a backlight. OLED = deeper, richer colours.

      • +8

Uh no. Please stop giving out wrong info. Oleds have deep black but they are inherently dimmer than LED tvs. For watching in brighter environments, LED is more suitable.

        • Haha no way. I dont know enough in the technical detail…but I owned a LG V20 - with a traditional IPS (LED tech), could barely see anything in direct sunlight outside…and this is one of the better phone screens I've owned. The Samsung S8 I switched to based on OLED tech was wayyy better.

    • +2

Also consider when you'll be watching TV. IF you're a night owl like me it doesn't really matter.

Having said that, both will be rubbish in direct sunlight. LED being brighter (in general) will be slightly better. Check rtings.com for exact ratings for particular TVs.

      • Thanks for the tip!

    • Invest in windows blinds or curtains

  • I need bigger walls.

Appliances online has never been cheap.

    • We’ll never cheap for TV’s. There are occasionally some good prices and a fairly decent selection of whitegoods.

  • +2

On a serious note… how the heck would you get this thing home????

    • Would definitely need a ute or trailer, I only just fit a 65" Samsung in a 4WD.

      • hahaha that rules out my X-Trail … glad i dont have 5k!

      • +3

I was able to carry a 65" on top of a Toyota Echo.

    • +4

      Maxi cab

    • surely they do delivery?

      • Package Size (WxHxD)
        2017 x 1264 x 532 mm and 65KG's LOL and i don't believe they deliver

      • +2

Nope, costco doesn't deliver. Source: I go to costo a lot

        • they have phone numbers of delivery companies here and there within the shop…

      • +1

Nope. But they do let delivery services advertise there, so you could organise one on the spot if your 82 incher was an impulse buy.

    • Hire a ute.

If you're buying a 5k TV I'm sure you wouldn't mind spending $100 on car hire.

      • I called a maxi taxi. Originally got rejected by the call centre but eventually got a wheelchair taxi which fit my 60" tv

    • For such an expensive and large TV, I'd pony up for the professionals to deliver it. They'll bring it in a truck, standing upright (the way its supposed to be transported). $5000 TV? Pay $100 for delivery for sure.

  • +1

A work colleague bought this 2 weeks ago for $6990, and was bragging how awesome it is and how he has an 82" screen. Do I tell him the price drop?

    • +6

do it! (if you hate him)

      • I did that once to a good friend, wasn't even trying to be mean… the pain was killing me, i had to share it.

Since then, permanent butthurt. And it was only like 100euro.

"Let me guess… I'll tell you what you should've paid"

    • +1

Find out how he paid for it first, then mention he'd be able to claim the difference back if he used one of the Amex or Visa cards that are always being posted here on Ozb. The ones that have purchase protection etc.

      • And then mention the discounted gift cards that would have made it even cheaper.

    • If he got it at Costco, they will refund the difference. My wife does it all the time, even if its $1.5 off the item lol

  • +1

for those who dont have costco, just price match with appliances online

  • I'm looking forward to the day that I can replace my wall panel with a whole LED TV.
    Maybe about 200 inch.

    • +5

Then you have to move to neighbours to watch your tv…

  • not a bad price, need to resist when i go to Costco tonight

    • +1

What does it feel like to have enough money to consider impulsively buying a 5K tv?

      • I'd like to think it's the same feeling anyone has walking into high fashion stores.

        Money is just a number
