  • Power Supply: DC 12V/2A

Are these cameras all wired for power?

Pretty sure you get two PlugPacks… one for the DVR and the other to power the cameras via a multi-way adaptor cable and a heap of figure-8 extension cables (ie. separate or semi-attached to the BNC cable used for video transmission). Here's a manual to a very similar kit: http://support.winplus.com.au/hc/en-us/article_attachments/2… Very much 'old tech' but may be good enough for your needs.

IMO: I’d avoid this deal unless you have enough power points to feed the cameras, plus 720p isn’t good. The ideal is POE (power over Ethernet) if you want lots of coverage without a power issue. You get what you pay for with security cameras.

DVR is 1080p but cameras are 720p (before the edit ;))

Strange they have a DVR capable of outputting 1080p but only 720p cameras.

At $299 it's good value, but if you have something worth protecting I'd go a 1080p POE system as Bellyup is suggesting.

        • Any good 1080p POE systems worth recommending?

        • +1

It should support displaying multiple cameras on screen, so having higher resolution output than individual camera makes sense.

        • @rooon:

I use A HIKVision setup with a 16 port DVR.

Very happy with it, but the DVR alone retails at close to $600 - I didnt pay that much, but I paid a lot more than $299.

Getting the cameras wired/installed cost a fair bit too. Nice to have though…

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: Do you mind sharing where you got your kit from?

        • @shagaroo:

ebay. I got most of the stuff from the USA and HK - dont be fooled by the "you must buy Australian versions" bs

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: ok - thanks. Just not sure which sellers to trust. Do you remember who you bought it from? I've been looking at eBay and Amazon US as well.

        • +1

@GreatWhiteHunter: Sorry just to interject but I KNOW of people who (accidentally) bought non-australian versions of HIKVision and could NOT change language from Chinese on these devices making them effectively useless.

So if you kept a list of the vendors you used to get your English versions it would actually help. Chinese only versions DO exist - it's not quite bs.

I agree you don't have to buy Australian versions if you don't need warranty etc. but you have to be able to read especially through setup right?

    • You don't know what you're talking about. POE only applies to IP systems/cameras, which this kit is not. POE doesn't guarantee "coverage without a power issue" as it really depends on how much current cameras draw and how much POE switch can provide.

As for this kit, powering 8 cameras through the 2Amp power supply is putting lots of stress on it. IR cameras can draw up to 500ma each. Fixed 3.6mm lens also gives no flexibility to adjust angle and focus.

Overall: it's a very basic China-made system which can give false sense of security.

    • Where does it say the cameras are 720P and the DVR is 1080P?
My interpretation is that the DVR is capable of accepting 720P and that the DVR is capable of outputting 1080P since these are the specifications under DVR

I'm guessing it's this one HE160233 (if not an "updated" 2018 model with very similar specs ie 234)

As sold a year ago for the same price: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/295099

So the camera resolution would still most likely be the same: 976 x 496

      • No idea, either they changed up their wording or idk.
Record Resolution: HD – 720P each channel

      • It is a camera upgrade, but it looks like it is same in all other aspects. I recently picked up a 4 camera version (same manufacturer) and they have the 728x488 resolution cameras and I was reluctant to keep it on advice I was given by a friend. I'm sure I'll be happier with the newer HD cameras though, so the 4 camera one is going back within the 60 days as unsuitable.

  • Will likey be an SD recorder, Likel "D1" possibly upscaled to 720p (not a lot of diff between good 576i and 720p in many cases or true720p but with capability to output a 1080p signal to the LCD monitor. (Which even Vga can easily do)

Not sure if it's analogue or one of the digital or analogue high bandwidth hybrids. For close-proximity installs it would be fine. Depends on the sutuation. Sometimes more cameras are better, sometimes a hidef cameras are better. Agreed that unless yhe cameras are powerd and signal travels down a single flex then the system will be a right pain to install. Aldi are too vague to knpw.

  • Most stores have sold out of these, but Carrum Downs (near Frankston in Vic) store had about 10 left (not on display, just one on display near the registers) at about 1pm this afternoon. I tried a few stores on Thursday and Friday, they all told me that the cameras sold out in about 2 hours; however that was before finding the stock today, so I'm sure others will still be wanting these.
