From Vintage Cellars
Suntory Yamazaki Pure Malt is fresh, fruit-forward single malt blended with the pure waters of the Southern Japanese Alps. The nose opens with light herbal aromas which merge with notes of green apple, pear and almond, backed by soft smoke. The palate is soft and delicate with complex notes of lime, plum, sweet pear, smoke and chamomile, accented by a sweet hint of butter cookie. Notes of honey, lemon and spicy ginger emerge on the lingering finish.

  • yummmmmmm - best whiskey in the world IMO

    • Hands down, my favourite whisky in the world

      • +1

        delicious

    • liked this better than Lagavulin 16, Dalwhinnie 15, Hibiki 12…still have to open my nikka from the barrel

  • +4

Queue the moron who thinks they're funny suggesting this will go well with AC Cola

    • +15

I know, right? As if people wouldn't use Pepsi. Ridiculous!

    • I think I would cry if I saw someone do this…

      • +1

Don’t spend time with wealthy people in China then.

    • +5

True, don't want to ruin the AC cola with yamazaki.

    • I am standing right behind that moron, now what's next ?

    • nar LA Ice - AC Colas a bit harder to find these days.

  • +6

OMG best whisky ever, some award told me so!!

  • OP - when you say this is the best in your collection what are you comparing to? Do you have an extensive collection of single malts or are you just an occasional whisky drinker?

    • +3

I wouldn't say an extensive collection, but I am definitely a big fan of whisky, especially Scotch and Japanese.
I have a handful of drinks at home - not pictured is my Glenfiddich 12YO, Highland Park 12YO, Monkey Shoulder, Jack Daniels and Dimple 15YO
And I was lucky enough to try Hibiki 12YO whisky in Japan. Japanese whisky is in a league of it's own IMO; shame they have a big price tag though :(

      • +1

Not knocking your other drinks, actually maybe I am, but Nikka from the Barrel blend > most of, if not all of those scotches.

        • +2

Never actually tried Nikka, would be pretty keen to give it a try though. How is it?

        • Correct.

        • @gimmebargains:
          It’s worth a punt at ~70 for 500ml

      • +4

it would be the best in your collection, but not convinced.
for $180, you can get some 18yo single molt scotches
ie Lagavulin 16 Year Old, Glenfiddich 18 Year Old, The Arran 18 Year Old, Glenlivet 18 Year Old, Glenmorangie Extremely Rare 18 Year Old, Glenfarclas 18 Year Old are all under $150.
Maybe it's a good drum but not worth the money

        • +3

Also worth trying Laphroaig which is a good single malt which polarises a lot of people but a good way to sample Islay peat flavours. Usually available for about $90/bottle.
Most of the whiskeys in OPs collection are blends.

        • Lagavulin distillers ed is a much nicer version, but also a fair bit more expensive.

Most of the Glens I don’t find all that interesting. Highland Park 18 can often be had for <150 if you watch for it. Nikka Coffey Grain NAS is also pretty good, especially if you can get it cheap from Japan, like ~$60 or so AFAIK.

I have half a bottle of Yamazaki 18 that I got for $250 ish back in the day :)

        • Thanks for the suggestions guys!

        • I do think Japanese whiskies are a bit overpriced since Yamazaki won the best whisky with the sherry cask 2013 bottle. With $180, there are plenty of nice scotches to try. My favorite now is Bruidladdich PC10, got the PC12 but havent opened yet. Value for money wise, lagavulin 16 or laphroaig 10 is probably the best

        • +1

@splathowa: Lagavulin 16 yr old is one of my favs… next level from Laphroiag imo

        • @hawkus81:
Me too, but I really like Lagavulin distillers ed when I don’t feel like getting punched in the face that evening :)

      • +4

Placing a sword next to your drinks is a recipe for disaster. "Watch this, bro."

      • +1

i have similar tastes to you. Have you tried Glengrant? Its available at BWS/liqourlands. Its now my go to for any occasion.. great for $50 mark

        • I haven't actually, would be pretty keen to give it a go though - especially if I can pick up a bottle under $50

      • +1

OP have you tried a Glenfiddich 18? They're pretty cheap over at Nicks wines ($99) and my fav.
I guess for their priceranges, the Glenfiddich 12 and Monkey Shoulder aren't in the same class as the Yamazaki 12.

        • +1

Unfortunately not, but that looks so good. And for an awesome price too. So tempted to pick one up today!

        • +1

@gimmebargains: yep, always that price at Nicks, super fast shipping too. One of my fav drops but I couldn't resist this deal either. Can't wait to try it.

  • +1

Also, the Hibiki is only $110!

    • Awesome, thanks for that. Updated the description

  • I am heading to Japan in a couple of weeks. Will I be much better off buying there?

    • +1

So much cheaper there. If you're in the area, visiting the distillery and going on the tour is amazing too.

      • Thanks Mjamie, this will be the first time I spend some time in Kyoto. I understand the distillery is close but where specifically is a good place to buy as a rule (in either Tokyo or Kyoto)? I just don't seem to recall seeing whisky for sale. I wasn't really looking back then though.

        • You can’t buy it at the distillery sadly other than in miniatures (which are oddly well priced)

And otherwise it’s incredibly hard to find. I found a bottle of hibiki 17 in Tokyo but that was almost by fluke

        • +1

They have a store at the distillery, and there's a good selection there. It's definitely cheaper in Japan. My friends and I got about 12 bottles between us.

        • @Mjamie:

No hibiki Yamazaki or hakushu available by the bottle at the distillery sadly

      • Ive heard the distilelry tour is only in Japanese… true or not?

        • They have different languages on audio recordings and it worked quite well.

    • +1

It's hard to find in Japan. And will be the same price IF you find it.

Source; I just got back a few months ago

      • You are correct. This particular whisky has been inflated in price due to its popularity. If you are heading to Japan, find other whiskeys, such as Nikka, Kirin, Kurayoshi. Plenty of unknown great whiskeys in Japan. Explore … it is like a treasure hunt.

      • noticed the same…..have been there twice in last 18 months..

    • +1

Just got back last week, couldn't find an aged one.

BTW, here is an article about Yamazaki.

    • Yes but not at the airport duty free, cheaper in the actual cities. Only issue is, you'll need to carry them in your luggage as carry on only allow liquids purchased in duty free.

  • +3

Went to japan last month, and bought it for a fraction of the price, just need to know where to look

    • Care to share where to look? Heading over in a week.

      • +2

Need to hit up the smaller towns like Kyoto, there are quite a few liquor stores in the Gion area.

Forget going to big cities like Tokyo and Osaka, it is always sold out.

        Last resort is don quijote

      • +1

        Two big franchises

Yamaya and shinanoya they are the Dan Murphys of Japan are you best bet to find a great selections of whiskeys

      • Raptor….try the Nikka Taketsuru, Yamazaki Distillers Reserv, The Chita, Coffey Malt, available in almost all supermarkets or basement levels of department stores

    • -1

      So coy.

    • was recently in kyoto, osaka and tokyo….I found the NAS to be a fraction of the price here…. but anything with a 12, 18 etc I found to be similar to prices here…

  • +4

Great whisky but god damnit what happened to the price of these? $180 is a bargain now? I've bought bottles in Australia for <$100 years ago and in Japan for dramatically cheaper again.

That said it is a great whisky. One of my favourites. Do yourself a favour and pick up a bottle if you're over in Japan.

    • +10

Yea no worries I'll just Nippon over.

      • +2

You'd be Osaka to miss out on that deal.

        • +1

When you do get the deal, you'll come back a Hiroshima.

        • +1

          @MathNerd:

And I'd ask what Tokyo so long to get some.

    • It's just low supply/high demand. Because of all the tourists, it doesn't even last long in Japan. I think they also cut supply from factories in general too.

    • its all can be understand, due to the fact that Japanese whisky getting very popular and limited production being exports.

  • +1

Bought two from Surrey Hills.. Still about four left.
Vouchers are on the counter.. Bar code is the same for all flyers

  • +1

man still remembered the day where i drink this at $90, smooth criminal!

  • True story, I did a blind taste test with a friend between this and ALDI's Highland Black 8YO Blended Scotch Whisky.
We both preferred the Highland Black!

  • i have more expensive tastes

  • What's this worth aussie duty free? Any one know.. Haven't paid retail for so long and over stocked on my favorites time to collect some special occasion bottles

    • They do not have this in duty free. Have seen the Chita and Hibiky Harmony
