Heading to Japan soon and have a few kids towing along this time round. What is the Ozbargain communities most recommended travel insurer? I don't have any credit cards. And in my younger days I was reckless and never bothered with travel insurance.

SCTI
Tidal with code.
Free insurance included as part of my credit card - why would you bother paying for it? For example get the ANZ credit card which has no annual fee for the first year and gives you 75k bonus Qantas points if you reach the minimum spend.
Because to make a claim you usually need to pay excess, sometimes this is more expensive than a separate travel insurance premium. Refer to your CC PDS/TnCs.
I paid for my flight and accommodation overseas with my AMEX Platinum Edge. Insurance is automatically activated, but it will cost me $250 excess for each claim.
TID/SCTI/RACV travel insurance premium cost ~$80 for my destination country, with $0 excess. But how often do you think you are actually going to claim the insurance? I sure would prefer never paying for it and only the excess when I need to. If you aren't claiming around every 3rd trip or so you are better off with the CC insurance.
The BIG difference between CC insurance and REAL travel insurance, is the Emergency Assistance team…
Sometimes even life or death…
(Been working in EA for over 4 years) you wouldn't believe the shit we see on a daily basis. That being said, all Insurers in Oz sign on the same code of conduct, what you pay for, is extra customer service, 24/7 emergency assistance team (all based in OZ) and sometimes no / low excess
@Nuclearvodka: The CC insurance that I use through Westpac provides a 24/7 emergency assistance team in Aus. Might be worth a look :)

Your argument is valid but now the reason differs for every person.
In my mind I believe something is going to go wrong so I made the choice to pay extra $80 for insurance + peace of mind which I believe is the exact purpose of insurance?Going by your logic, it is similar to if you have a car, why bother insuring it. Just pay it when you have to (repair, crash and so on).
I too would prefer never paying for my car insurance (5 years and counting and no claim, so I’ve wasted those $).The car may have different price range than travel, but still, I rather pay $80 now than $250 down the line.
Peace of mind…With your example I am not not insuring my car, I am getting free insurance on my car with a set excess to pay when I claim. If you wanted to buy insurance for every trip you take you have to work out how often you will claim it, what if there is any excess on the plan you take out and then compare all that to the once off excess fee for the free insurance on the CC. It is all a numbers game.
The insurance that I get with my CC gives me peace of mind so to each their own I guess :)
20% off Travel Insurance at World2Cover
Is travel insurance included with credit card only valid if we pay for flights using that card?
tnc differs amongst all
cba plat. cc offer foc without using it for ticket, just need to activate before departure
Westpac you just need to spend $500 in accommodation etc to trigger the cover. You also can pay to get pre existing coverage through Westpac as well.
I've used TID several times, Huddle, InsureandGo.
I've never had to claim on any of them so its hard to compare.
Currently my go to is World2Cover because it gets good reviews and is pretty cheap with coupon.Southern Cross Travel Insurance as the best.
Don't use a car insurer - or any backed up a bank or suncorp - they don't pay
There’s a list from Choice that was updated recently: https://www.choice.com.au/travel/money/travel-insurance/revi…
RACV tops the list.
I’ve bought TID SCTI and RACV but never did a claim.OK guys, especially future readers of this thread, on my recent trip overseas (Asia) I actually had to make a claim due to an injury and I was admitted to the hospital for a couple days.
As mentioned above, I had travel insurance (automatic) from AMEX Platinum Edge as all itineraries were paid using that ($250 excess). I also opted for additional RACV travel insurance with $80 premium ($0 excess).
My hospital fee overseas was AUD 326 (converted).
So I made 2 claims with AMEX and RACV to test the water (my first travel insurance claim ever). Each online claim process asked me if there are any other insurance companies that I may be eligible to make a claim with. I was honest and mentioned AMEX/RACV on each one.Just so you know that the bills and invoices from this hospital are not in English and they are thermal carbon papers (readable IRL but slightly blurry after scanning), so I have to scan and change the contrast & brightness for the writing to be legible on the computer.
After submission, AMEX replied in 5 business days, asking for the bills and invoices to be translated to English LOL.
Lo and behold, on the same night, I got AUD 324 suddenly transferred to my bank account from RACV (slightly less due to conversion but it's OK). After 2 business days then I got an email from RACV saying they approved my claim and that the money will be sent to me after 5 business days (well I already got them so WOOHOO!).Now I know who to stay with. If you've had good experiences with AMEX insurance before then good on you.
FYI AMEX insurance was fulfilled by Chubb Insurance Australia while RACV's was fulfilled by Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance.
I've used AAMI many times and I've made 1 claim.
(also i dont rely on CC insurance as I heard there are a lot of exemptions so I always buy my own).
Always read the pds and see if it covers your needs.
Southern Cross Travel Insurance
Happy customerI have credit card travel insurance but the inclusions arent the same as per real insurance. Used Tid in the past but my upcoming trip is with world2cover as its possible to get $0 excess with a few dollars more.
You've got to love the amount of fake reviews on product reviews. Was looking at SCTI and came across 2 reviews from the 30th January from Mary and Nayoka saying the same thing. And 1 of those was verified.
I’m also heading over to Japan with wife and child later this year and have been keeping an eye out for deals. Normally my go to site over the past couple of years has been OnlineTravelInsurance but this time I’ve found the best deal with decent inclusions has been the 20% off World2Cover deal posted above
Yep. I just went with them too. I'm borrowing a friend's car while I'm very there, unfortunately travel insurance only seems to cover hire cars. I might have to try and get my friend to adjust their own insurance to include me. Such a hassle!
I'm interested in World2Cover….anyone knows the current discount code?

Thanks for that! much appreciated
