Nongshim Shin Ramyun Noodle Soup 5 Pack $3 @ Woolworths

1240

Time to stock up some instant noodles. It's the first time drops to $3 at Woolworths.

Here is a review on it.

Thanks to crayner for pointed out the ramen is made in South Korea.

Update:

I can confirm it is Korean stock, and there are plenty of stock at my local Woollie, ready for OzBargainers' onslaught.

    Korean or Chinese stock?

    • +4

Your right. It is important and taste definitely different.

      • +4

Costco have Chinese and they are not as good.

        • No, Costco stock is def Korean.

        • @Shiq1: im looking at the box from 6 months ago and it says China

        • +2

@spy:They changed. Now it's from South Korea.

        • +1

@areustillpretty: good move as it’s always been Chinese since they opened in Oz

    • -4

almost 300% sure is Chinese stock.

      • Used to be Korean a while ago…

      • How can you tell? Does it say on the packaging.

        • +3

Not sure why you are negged but yes, it says on the packaging.

          @CheapCoffee:
Last week I happened to see the woolie shelf selling this and checked it was made in Korea with price tag $6(?)
I think it should be the same stock, though I think $3 quite cheap given Korean grocer selling at $5.

        • Yup it's the cheapest I've seen, my local Asian grocer sells them for $3.90 if you buy 2 or more.

        • @hyunjun24:

          Single or pack of 5?

Pack.of 5 that is discounted is always China stock. That's why most Asian shops sell cheap shin is China stock. I never seen cheap Korean made pack of 5 before. Single ones can be Koreans.

        • @overlook:
It was 5 pack. I think woolie was promoting to celebrate Chinese new displaying it in the front. And it was made in Korea.

        • @annakira:

Sydney CBD pitt street selling it for $2.99 each

    • I have bought from woolworths, its Korean stock. I have also seen Singaporean stock at a few asian stores but I have never seen Chinese stock. Is Nongshim even made in China? Lol, never seen that stock.

      • +3

        Costco sells the China stock

      • There are China made stock. mostly ones sold in Chinese groceries stores.

        • +1

Correct. I bought one 5 pack in Vietnamese grocer and was cheap, but found taste isn't the same and realised it was made in china.

Of course a website that reviews ramen exists.

  • time to stock up

  • Nice! Tho I usually buy Jin ramyun.

    • Yes! Used to be a lover of Shin Ramyun, but once I tried Jin ramyun I could not go back.

Very similar taste to Shin Ramyun, but Jin is a little spicer and… tastier?

Make sure to get the version marked "spicy" and not the "mild" version.

  • +5

I love the black version. You'll never go back.

    • coz the black version is beef stock…this is just msg/mushroom lol

    • +2

black version is insanely good but also pricier and hard to find

    • Definitely prefer the black. It's so good. I like to add shiitake mushrooms to mine and use some of the mushroom water for extra flavour. Of course this makes prepping and cooking time take 30-40 mins…lol

  • +10

This is the actual item rather than the promo advertisement and they're made in South Korea. :)

I like the taste, but adds to my waistline way too quick!

    • Me too, I like the taste, however lately feel bloated after eating it. Maybe showing my age lol. Oh and it's so spicy hot, I can only use half of the chilli seasoning (sachet), whereas Mi Goreng (Indomie)I can use full satchet. So for the newbies, start with only half of chilli powder guys :) HTH

      • No way

    • +2

Not Korean but I know a Korean person and have eaten at a Korean restaurant so I clicked yes. Thanks.

    • +1

I'm not Korean but lived there for a while and am now partnered with a Korean.

    • represent :D

    • I yes voted as I have a good career.

  • the maggi karri flavour taste better. use to like Nongshim Shin Ramyun Noodle Soup but now have switch.

    • Only the ones from Asia. I tried the Australian Maggi curry version before and it was horrible. Beef and oriental flavours has also gone down the drain 😣

  • +1

I heard there is some health issue with black version a while back, I prefer classic red version.

  • These are the best instant noodles.

  • +1

Add some dried shitake mushroom to the boiling water for a minute before noodles and drop an egg on at the end, instant winner

  • Best way to eat them is by adding spring onions for that crisp taste. If you want a more thicker consistency add egg. Want to try a different fusion style try adding cheese, but no matter what ramyun must be eaten with kimchi.

  • The red version of Shin Ramyeon is the best. As far as best in Korea? No. There is no "best" in Korea.

I personally like Jin Ramyeon as it's smooth and makes a good base for other stuff. Shin is great too but has a stronger flavour. But I'll always go for Neoguri Ramyeon if I feel like a fishy feast.

Chuck some spring onions, sesame oil, some vegetables odds and ends, an egg and seaweed or odeng (fish cakes) and it's a good meal.

For people who are complaining that these noodles are "too spicy" or are "bad for your stomach and/or the toilet bowl" are just wrong. Ramyeon doesn't really affect your stool like you think it does and if you're scared of the spice, you really are a weakling because these are very weak spice levels that dissipate quicker than the nutrients.

    • +11

      "you really are a weakling"
That's a bit OTT. Spice comfort levels are totally relative. I have seen young children comfortably eat food in Korea that would make cartoon steam come out of my ears.
I think it's just habit and tolerance.

        • +2

          Lol rightio then

        • +1

You sound pretty dumb. Nothing relative about that at all.

        • -2

@Crowdedthehouse: The fact that you think that is what makes you dumb. That's hilarious.

        • +4

dude I was born and bred in the very country where they add extra lava in this noodle while playing Diablo on max difficulty, but I still can't handle their "everyday spicy". Everyone is different, give people a break.
I am still ok at Starcraft tho

        • -4

@random bypasser: Then you're just weak.

        • @random bypasser: so you're a Thai.

        • Jesus Christ, it's just noodles bro. Calm down.

        • -3

@Orpheus: Yeah, dunno why people getting upset.

  • I only eat instant noodles maybe twice a year… So looking forward to this. I like to go to the korean grocer.. Buy the premarinated spicy pork… Fry it in the pot until cooked… Remove from pot… Put water into pot… Kimchi.. Seasoning… When boiling.. Add in egg and noodles. Serve in bowl with previous cooked pork on top.

  • +4

Oh Shin Ramyun. My sweet. I still remember the first time I tasted your spicy goodness, your noodles slipping and sliding over my tongue, burning my throat in passionate ecstasy.

    Om Nom Nom.

  • Best served with an egg and cold Kimchi.

  • every since they have the 'MSG free' version, its no where near as good. Bring back the MSG version. The old one used to have a mushroomy spicy taste. Now it is only spicy which is a bit boring

    • You can always add your own MSG according to your taste

  • +2

Ummmm, has anyone here actually read the review… all the way to the end? 😂😂

    • +1

I was thinking the same thing!

The guy really gets descriptive hahahahaha

  • eating this with Kimchi is so lame and unoriginal. I eat this with Durian bits chucked in for full on, elevated spicy pungent cheesy goodness.

    • +1

Note to self: wait for another elevator if juventino is there

      • +1

note to you : it lingers…for a considerable time.

      • Might be time for the stairs.

    • wuh… bruh

  • Never tried it with kimchi - do you serve it as a side dish or mix it in with the noodles?

Any recommendations for good kimchi around Chatswood Sydney?

    • +1

as a cold side dish. i think you can buy them from Chinese groceries.

my goto brand is Paldo. I tried a lot of the others but I like Paldo the most.

Theres a place in north strathfield which is a giant Korean grocery and they normally have like 12+ kimchis you can taste test. Some are spicier, some are shrimpier, more gingery, sour etc. And they are wildly different (i hated about 6 of them, loved about 2, meh about the rest).

  • Just bought whole 📦 -)

    • You're the reason there has been an empty spot in every woolies I've been to to get these!

      • try home delivery.

      • You can raincheck them.

      • Tbh I visit 4 woolies and they all cleaned out, I almost gave up but decide to ask shelf guy to see if they got any at the back, You should try that, I wasn't broddening or anything, a box is not that much they goes very quickly..

        • Wolli Creek Woolie still has around 10 boxes left, I mean 8x5pack box), in display as of yesterday (Monday), if anyone is looking for one.

  • These noodles are high in fat, you know they deep fry the noodles?

I recommend the Maggi 99% fat free noodles and only use 1/2 a packet of seasoning to reduce salt levels.

    • But do they taste as good as the high in fat ones? 😏

      • Agree it’s all about the taste. Just ask uni students.
