Does this perform better than the mi notebook pro? My guess is yes.

xiaomi vs Acer, a tough question…

    • you can get parts easily for acer in australia, xiaomi will need to be sent back to china.

also the acer would come with amazon return if there is a problem , the xiaomi is under one of the other retailers processes.

      • +1

how does amazon return work when it does not have warranty?

  • Does this has a backlit keyboard ?

    • Found an answer: YES

    From Another website -

its neatest retro feature is upgradable memory and storage. The process is pretty simple, too, since you just remove the three Phillips-head screws at the bottom of the machine to access its RAM and hard drive to replace them.

Seems good, great deal OP !!

Thanks I thought so too. Don't post many deals on here but this one was too good not to share with the OzB community!

Good specs, but this weighing 5.27 pounds (approx 2.39 kg) is only draw back making it slightly less portable.

      • +1

No dedicated graphics on that one.

I bought this in December: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0746P25QX

for AU$927 delivered. Strikes a great balance between portability, power and features.

        • Not bad

Pretty weird to see an 8th generation processor with DDR3 RAM. I guess with the shortages manufacturers are getting creative.

        • @Agret:
Where does it say that ? Sorry can't s eem to find anything that says its a DDR3

        • @doomknight20:

My comment is a reply to Dr PhilGood who linked this item on Amazon:

          Acer Swift 3, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, NVIDIA GeForce MX150, 14" Full HD, 8GB LPDDR3, 256GB SSD, SF314-52G-55WQ

        • @Agret: I thought they were not releasing a true 8th Gen for Laptops CPU's yet - that they are an upgraded Kaby Lake (not Coffee lake),
therefore they could still use DDR3 RAM and cheapout with the MOBO

    • weight is the trade off for a large screen and internal expansion.

Note that this does not have warranty.

    Reviews don't favour this model.

    • +3

What do you mean? 4 star rating with 750+ reviews isn't bad at all.

      • I remember researching it when I needed a laptop, it must of been the 2015 older model. Sorry.

    Is RAM easily expandable?

Which RAM would one need to buy that'll fit in these model?

    • Says Low Power DDR3 (Low Voltage) above - wouldve expected DDR4 by now, maybe it’s not an issue.. :-)

  • Any ideas on dealing with warranty?

MX150 is a nifty middle-low dedicated card based om Nvidia Pascal but don’t expect full HD gameplay for AAA titles. Price looks good though :-)

But still able to run latest games with medium quality settings?

      • Yes, take a look at its performance:

      • +1

It’s roughly the same as a 1030GT which yes, medium or low settings should be ok.

It’s better than the intel integrated, that’s for sure

Take a look, if you are happy with 30fps or just above, many games play at a mix of medium to high, though some lower of course. It is pretty nifty for a low end dedicated graphics card.

        • @FabMan: https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-MX150-Benchmark…

I'd say a mix of medium to low, especially with 2gb VRAM.

Fifa, Sims 4, Rocket League or less demanding games will be ok in high but not AAA's..

It's also curious that the VRAM is DDR5, yet the system RAM is DDR3.

        • @mochariffic: Yeah, I guess it depends how demanding the games are. If you look at YouTube, some games require lowest settings and reduced resolution while others can run High at 1080p.

Most on YouTube seem to be at 1080p, Medium and 30fps, which is pretty good, but as newer games come out something has to reduce.

Acer is hands down the worst laptop hands out there. McDonald's toys have better plastics, these things break just opening the lid.

    • Agreed, however - the specs are very good value.

      • No doubt. I've never had an issue with the hardware for them, but the screens, power connectors, keyboard, and general edge plastic make these fail.

        Good price though

  • +2

I would caution against this deal, as although the specs appear to be lit, ACER laptops in my experience are very sub-par, even the ones that are apparently 'top of the range'.

Similar price, local warranty, slightly lower spec (older CPU too) but same graphics card.

    • Smaller screen too.

      • and a lot more, read my another comment

So essentially incomparable, and a good example of how we are getting ripped off on Laptops in Aus. Year-old technology and limited selection of models at full price.

  • It has been at this price since middle december so i would recommend not to rush to jump in this deal. It seems like this is the latest fixed retail price for this model.

    • +1

This is actually RRP from Acer. No discount, may be worth a wait, if you can

      • i can wait for an amazon discount. would it happen soon?

  • Do these work fine with Australian power? I guess I just need to buy an Australian power cord which should only be a few bucks? No problems with the voltages here with the charger?

    • yes, these works on voltage between 100-240V, you just need an adpater which takes US Pins.

  • -1

The price seems to be $799 now?

    • Nope, still same price.
