NBN Individual Premises Switch - anyone gone through the process?

Have any Ozbargainers gone through an NBN Individual Premises Switch process, most likely moving from FTTN to FTTP, or maybe even with neighbours to FTTC.
I'd love to hear about experiences, advice, hints et.
I understand the initial scoping would cost $660.

I'm currently on FTTN with line speed around 18.5Mbps. Speedboost doesn't help as this seems to be all the line is capable of.
There is a node outside my neighbours 3 doors away but that isn't my node…my node is about 1km away (just the way the copper cabling distribution is laid out in my area)

there's a HUGE thread on whirlpool (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2673949) which has some more information

    • Thanks for the link…working through it now.
Nothing is easy by the sound of things, lol

      • Op, enable PM's on your account. I work for Telstra and might be able to get your service looked at

        • looks like new house build next door paid for fttp. can you check ours?

          • @mistericho: You have to go through NBN to find out the cost. What kind of NBN do you have now?

            • @Twix: fttc

              • @mistericho: Since July most of the FTTC-FTTP quotes are $2400 to $3600 and a couple have come in at $6k to $8k. I guess yours would be in the lower end price bracket if next door has FTTP.

And there's this plot of costs for those that have got quotes so far

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vS4A3OuN9GCI…

Looks like at minimum its a 5k job so far.

My limited understanding is that node distance isn't hugely relevant, as they don't necessarily route through them, but i could be wrong.

A few things you might want to look into first:

    • Review your internal house wiring and see if you can simply the configuration and cut-off no longer used extensions
    • Wait till the co-existence period is finished.. once all the legacy ADSL gear is turned off, NBN can switch to better VDSL2 profiles
    • Thanks for that. It's pretty simple as it is. One connection only straight through to the distribution/entry point in my house.
I'll probably remove the filter though as my old pstn number seems to be delivered as SIP now. (Telstra Frontier Gateway with linked DECT phone)

      • If you can remove the filter and have only one socket connected, that is the best. (assume you have central filter?). Ensure there are no other extensions still connected.
The individual premises switch is more for political points (if you want FTTP you can pay) than actual use.

  • Also ask neighbours what their sync speed is.
(When/if co-existence is over in your area push NBN for the min 25Mbps)

    • Yes, looks like my next door neighbour (Telstra also) is getting around 18Mbps.

  • I am having another issue. My House is long and our bedrooms are on both ends. The router signal is poor. 15-18MBPS whereas hard-wired it's 90+. Any tips to make it better? Currently on Netgear R7000 which is diminishing as it was around 35+ when new.

    • First try the cheap method (it is Ozbargain after all) and that's to make a parabolic reflector using cardboard and aluminium foil.

Do a wireless survey and manually configure channels to avoid interference from neighbours gear. 2.4 Ghz is often crowded unfortunately as lots of people get basic routers from ISPs that isn't capable of 5 Ghz.

If you have the house internally cabled connecting both ends, use multiple WiFi access points.

    • I had a similar problem at my house, tried wifi extenders and they took the bandwith to about 60% at the room furthest from the router (at the time, it was an asus ac68). Bought the Google WiFi before Christmas when it was on sale, and now get about 90% at the room furthest away.

      • But google wifi doesn't have any antennas. How far are your rooms from the router?

        • Google wifi has internal antennas.

  • I have a wired problem.I recently moved to new house it's about 1.5 years old.when I check for NBN availability it shows wrong my location in roll out map and says construction will star in your area while in my actual location in roll out map shows NBN is available. All my neighbours connected to NBN.I contact Optus and they said I can only connect Adsl+2 sound wired right?

  • OP how much you end up paying?

    • What kind of NBN do you have now?

      • FTTC want to go to FTTP

        • You're in luck. FTTC to FTTP recently had a price drop & costs have come down at $2500 to $3600.
