Work with IFTTT - brings everything together
If This Then That ( or IFTTT ) is both a website and a mobile app that launched in 2010 and has the slogan "Put the Internet to work for you". The idea is that you use IFTTT to automate everything from your favourite Apps and websites to App-enabled accessories and smart devices. IFTT has become the ultimate automation service for small tasks between Internet-connected services. Whether on the Web or with selected Apps on iOS and Android, IFTTT can handle anything its member service "channels" support. When user-specified events occur, follow-up tasks are triggered and handled.
There are numerous combinations ( also called "recipes" ) on IFTTT that can make your life easier. These links consist of just two elements: a Trigger ( If This ) and an Action ( Then That ) – For example, If you own a Xiaomi smart light, you could use IFTTT to automatically turn on the light every time you're tagged in a Facebook photo. In another example, you could set your light to be turned on, if motion is detected in your home when you're not at home.

The product has passed Alexa certification and could be voice controlled by Amazon Echo

  • can this be put outdoors? thinking of something to go on my fence

    • Nope, I don't think the button/receiver is waterproof. Just buy some waterproof Christmas decoration lightstrips for that. They would be longer, too, and cheaper. You would hook those up to a smart socket.

      • ah cool! thanks

    • The LED is waterproof, but the controller would need to be undercover

      • thanks man!

  • The strip itself can, as it's listed as waterproof. I don't think I'd trust the controller unit to be, though. You'd need to keep it dry.

I've bought some at this price previously, but they do come down a few dollars cheaper.

How are people securing/locking-down all these Xiaomi IoT style devices?

Do you run them on a separate wifi network and VLAN to your normal home network?

    • +1

That's a good point, I was thinking old 2nd router LAN from the main router and separate network. Do you think that would be secure enough?

I think with my Xiaomi vacuum cleaning that is laser mapping my apartment daily that Chinese agents could swing through the windows anytime and know where everything is. But seriously, your right that there is some real risk with all these networked Chinese IoT devices.

    • +2

Not being facetus, but what are you worried that might happen if the chinese CIA know what time you turn your lights on?

If there is a good reason i will run mine on a different VLAN

      • I'm not so much worried about led lights, more things like the Xiaomi fang cameras and other appliances that run cut-down linux distros.

Most home firewalls will block inbound connections, but this does not stop appliances on the home network from making outbound connections. Once the connection is established the data flows both ways generally unimpeded.

Additionally many people will setup port-forwarding rules and the like to allow an appliance to be contacted remotely. For example, the ability to view NVR etc. My concern is both with appliances that can be accessed/attacked remotely, as well as some of the cheap Chinese appliances that make outbound connections to your internet. How many people have gone to the trouble to either block outbound connections from such devices, or sit them on completely separate networks.

Having a remote shell on to an appliance that has full network access to all the machines within your home network doesn't seem a good idea to me.

        • Your points seem very reasonable. Definitely in regards to port forwarding for access outside of the LAN. With the Xiaomi IOT stuff, i use through Homeassistant so hopefully that will limit the use of the Chinese Cloud and keep within my LAN

    • Your mobile would need to bridge the VLAN to control them, so alot of hassle for no extra in security

  • Does this work directly with Google Home? Will it show up in the Yeelight app similarly to all these Yeelight bulbs?

    • Yes, mine does, although it has a minor issue where it says it cannot dim the lights but it does anyway. Setting a specific colour by voice works fine though. Can also coordinate with timers to trigger scenes like sunrise for gradual transition from soft orange to full white.

    • It works with google home via the Mi Home

  • +1

Use coupon code DD4off6 for an extra 6% (US) off (works out to be about $1.26 AU saving)

  • Better off getting a 4x longer strip for $10 and changing the controller to a Magic Home wifi one ($15) which is also compatible with IFTTT, HA and Homebridge. 2m is just too short!

    • +2

Do you have a link to the longer strip and how to change the controller?

    • Does it work with google home directly?

    • Are they RGBW? as this is has Red Green Blue White and Warm White

  • What do people use these for? I like the idea but can't think of anywhere to put the damn thing.

    • Behind the tv? Fancy alfresco/backyard dinner table?

    • For ambiance. Dont have one yet but areas I'm thinking of putting one would be behind a buffet in our dining area, behind the TV (as a back overflow light), behind the bedhead, around shelves (above or below), behind a sofa that backs onto a wall and under the bench or overhangs in the kitchen.

Tempted to grab one and start with the buffet and see how I go. Probably would want to combine with other dimmable (or coloured) lights.

    • +2

I replaced bedside table lamp and ran it around the headrest of my bed. Looks quite nice, esp with "romance" mode on. My partner said 'maybe' when I asked her if it made me a better lover.

I'd get another one to run underneath a desk.

      • +3

Watch your heads underneath a desk. :)

  • Showing 0 stock already? Sold out?

  • Does anyone who had previously bought these know if you can cut this and then re-install controller in the middle?

Looking at using these for some kitchen cupboards I have recently had installed.

    • Nope, only one controller, so once you cut it, you cant use the other piece, and no joiners available.

  • Anyone used these in a bathroom for a make-up light around the mirror? Gotta get something for the missus…

    • Might not be bright enough for that

    • Yes, it works well

  • Expired already

  • out of stock already
