8TB External Seagate DOA. Twice.

So I went with this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354182

The drive arrived a few days ago, on the 18th I think. Plugged it in to my main Win7 desktop, the blue light comes on and… not visible on the computer. Nothing in My Computer/This PC, nothing in Disk Management, nothing in Device Manager.

Huh.

So I plug it into my Win10 notebook. Same deal - light comes on but computer completely fails to detect it.

I pull up amazon.com and file a return and replacement and hey, they express ship replacements apparently because that sucker arrived today. Exact same problem though. Blue light comes on, computer sees nothing. Same with laptop. This time I also connected it to my Archer VR600 which also didn't see it and old crapbox PC I have lying around for no real reason, neither of them can see it. I also have a power adapter with the right voltage, amperage and fitting so I try that. And a spare USB3.0 cable. Nope, still just a blue light.

This is what it sounds like starting up: https://vocaroo.com/i/s1LZ34hCa4Wc

The noise at 13s happened on the first drive too, not sure if it's normal startup noises or a bad noise. But if the drive was at fault wouldn't the USB interface at least appear in Device Manager?

Anyone got any clues before I return this second drive and cop my ~$65 loss in return shipping?

  • File a warranty claim with Seagate in Australia?

  • refund

sometimes the constant returns and not being able to trust having your data on it isnt worth the 'saving'

  • At least for me regarding amazon US I've been able to ask the support staff for shipping to be covered. Its always better to file the refund with either the live chat or on the phone as you can ask for things such as shipping to be covered.

    • They promise $15 USD, nothing more. Which is why I'll only be down ~$65 instead of ~$105.

  • Every Seagate drive I buy seems to die. I only buy Samsung and wd now.

  • I hate Seagate, dodgey stuff, that's why it's always cheaper. Always buy WD, never had a WD hard drive fail on me ever.

SSD & microSD cards are Samsung because they are so cost efficient and don't fail like no tomorrow like the slightly cheaper Sandisk ones (see the correlation?).
