Allergy Testing - Using Hair

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone here has used: https://www.allergytestaustralia.com/

I've been to an immunologist twice and she hasnt been able to narrow down what i'm allergic too.

I found allergytestaus on a groupon site and was wondering if anyone can vouch for this?

For those interested in the special:

They use your hair which is interesting as I didnt know that was possible. I was going to get some blood tests done which should cost around $200ish if i pick all groups.

Thanks for the feedback guys xx

Do the blood test. I found out I was allergic to a few types of things.

I'm guessing you already have, but do the skin prick test.

    • Yeh just in regards to the blood test, I guess I will need to choose all groups -_-

      Yup twice :)

  • Save your money - hair testing is a scam. http://www.allergyclinic.co.nz/pseudoscience.aspx

You can't tell anything much about a person from hair. (You can only get DNA if you pull out the root. You can tell if they've been exposed to airborne toxins from the hair itself, that's it.)

    • Thanks for the reply.. i was thinking how this was possible x

You can tell a lot actually.
Would not take too much notice of Richard Dawkins.

What can you tell and how? Hair is just protein. Once it's past the skin, there's nothing linking it to the animal it came from. The protein can absorb certain substances from the air (e.g. Hg), telling you what the organism was exposed to. But without any connection to live cells you can't know anything about an organism's immune system.
Unless there's something I'm missing. How's it supposed to work?

Why do you think police and sports drug testing is done by hair samples these days?
Will pick up THC from marijuana for 2 to 4 weeks after ingestion/smoking.
Victoria Police have been doing it for roughly 40 years or more …… the testing that is :)
Shame lead and mercury are not on this particular list of tests. Obviously you have not read it.

That has nothing to do with allergies. Yes, you can use hair test for exposure to certain things, particularly airborne substances.

Explain to me how analysing hair can tell you how an organism will respond to an allergen.

          @Elwes:
Nah. You are an arrogant waste of time.

Good information, I am also currently hunting down my allergies/intolerances.
$29 is nothing compared to what I've suffered all these years.

    • Yeh im not sure if this is a scam or not but from above i might just save my money and do a blood test

      Don't waste your money, it's a scam.
It's impossible to tell anything about allergies from a person's hair.

      • Dunno.
The alcohol part of the test may be of some interest to you :)

      • Commercial Hair Analysis
Hair analysis is the test in which a sample of the person’s hair is sent to a lab for measurement of mineral content and diagnosis of allergies.
The ability to diagnose allergic disease was studied in 9 fish allergic and 9 control subjects, who provided specimen for blood and hair for testing. All fish allergic subjects had previously been shown at Guy’s Hospital in London to have a positive skin prick test to fish. The specimens were submitted as duplicate samples to five labs that offered a commercial service for diagnosing allergies from hair testing. All 5 labs were not only unable to diagnose fish allergy but also reported many allergies in apparently non-allergic subjects and provided inconsistent results on duplicate samples from the same subject. This study should remove any shred of doubt that hair analysis is completely useless in diagnosing allergies.

At best/worst "allergyclinic.co.nz" is the pot calling the kettle black.

I am "allergic" to fish. Actually to the mercury in fish.

That in term makes me "allergic" to foods with an over abundance of sulphur.

This is due to catching a "strep" infection in 1982,which was diagnosed by an ENT as allergenic rhinitis.

Try running that lot through your NZ website.

My disease is best known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

(Bioscreen is the firm to contact for that. Equal best in the world. Test prolly over $400 by now and worth every cent.)

There are several parts of the 600 items tested that I am specifically interested in. $29 is chicken feed when it comes to my health.

    Purchasing medical services via Groupon?

    • +1

Yeh i've never purchased anything health via groupon but this just conveniently popped up haha..

will be giving this a miss :P

      • Good choice, I bought one and the voucher code is not working! DAMN

        • Have you worked out how to join and sign in?
I've sent them a message and have received a ticket for next week.

        • @Dave Id: The voucher code is supposed to work when you enter it after adding the item to your cart/basket.
Message saying "Sorry, this coupon is not applicable to your basket contents." appeared when I entered the voucher.
I tried every single item, still nothing. I emailed Groupon asking for help, they said wait 7 days, LOL, I told them I want a refund, no reply…

        • @brokenglish:

Will await a further reply from the testers, given they emailed a ticket number.

Would not be surprised if a request for a refund from PayPal is required.

          Usually steer clear of Groupon.

          Quite interested in the test,especially @ $29.

        • @Dave Id:

same as me, I havent bought a groupon in years.. but this was interesting to look into. Can you guys please tell me if the code works.

If so I'll just wing it since im curious lol

    • I wouldnt say it's a "medical" service, more like "good/fun/interesting stuff to know"

  • I've been to an immunologist twice and she hasnt been able to narrow down what i'm allergic too.

    It’s cat hair

  • Voucher is now working.

    • Thanks so much Dave!!!
