Building a Gaming/Powerful PC

Hey guys!

My first post here!

So as the title already says, I'm thinking on building a powerful pc.

And as I have no idea whatsoever on where to start, I'd like some advices and tips. Or website that i can check.

Another question is how much do you guys reckon that I'll spend building a machine like this? And are there any good deals on the ebay sale that is going on now (PCTECH)… Or most of these companies just price jack…?

So basically I need a superfast computer, not so much for gaming, as I'll be looking more into charts and graphics and also run multiple softwares at the same time. So it needs to be precise and fast and also I'll need two monitors in the future (I'll have to look for this on the motherboard, am i right?)…

So I was thinking to start with:

i7 or i5, with 16gb, Nvidia 1070 or 1080 and at least 1TB +250gb ssd or more(I don't know)? Motherboard…?

Ok, so, have no idea which RAM choose, have a lot of different brands and DDR's 3 or 4? which one is the best?

HD, I've read somewhere that WD is the best brand, and the color black, should be the one to go for… don't remember where and why… Any recommendations…? What about the SSD? Should i go with EVO, PRO, 850, 960? Or NvMe… Have no idea… I'm doing some research, but as I'm out of this game for such a long time, this is basically all new to me…Such a noob :P

Nvidia 1070 or 1080, how big is the difference between them ?

And what about motherboard… brands? Models?

Which CPU Cooler and power supply?

And can i choose any case? Or I'll need to check specifications if it'll fit all the components?

Anything else that I'll need?

Sorry about all those questions… They're probably silly for most of you, not to me :P and I do really appreciate any kind of help.

Thanks.

    GET THIS!!

Works out to be cheaper than building from scratch and is a modest amount me thinks. or you could wait a few months for the new series, but that'll never end.

I'll try respond to a few of your points in order:

You don't need to look for dual monitor support on the motherboard, as since you will have a graphics card then your monitors will plug into that. Regardless, pretty much all modern motherboards and GPUs support at least 2 monitors.

8th gen i7 with 16GB is good, definitely go DDR4, 3 is pretty much obsolete now. DDR4 speed i recommend 3000 or 3200MHz. I like the Gskill Trident Z RGB RAM.

I would get a NVME 960 EVO 500GB m.2 SSD for your boot drive and primary storage, and then whatever size you need mechanical hard drive for your secondary storage. Don't worry too much about speed and reliability of the mechanical hard drive as anything that needs it should be installed on the SSD. A seagate barracuda or WD Blue 1, 2, or 3TB should be fine.

There is a significant difference between 1070 and 1080, but if gaming isn't the priority then 1070 should be more than fine.

Motherboards ill leave for someone else to advise.

Power supply i recommend the EVGA Supernova 650W they have like a 10yr warranty and are usually good value.

There are 3 sizes of motherboard, ATX (biggest) micro ATX (medium) and mini ITX (tiny). Choose either ATX or Micro ATX depending on your budget. And then the case is personal preference, pretty much any full size or mid tower case will fit any ATX or micro ATX motherboard. Its just the ITX boards that are more designed for small form factor builds. The NZXT Source 340 or 340 Elite are a nice case.

Then cover everything with RGB and you're good to go ;)

Though honestly, the Dell 8930 linked above is probably your best bet, it is great value and has a good selection of parts.

    • 1070 is ample for gaming.. 1080 is hardly worth it for most people. I'd keep that in mind if I were OP as you made it sound kinda shitty for gaming.

      • Yeah a 1070 will CRUSH anything at 1080p.

        • It can do quite well in 1440 and medium 60fps 4k

  • Hey, thanks everyone!

    Really helpful comments.

And I did not know about hitting the related tab button… Save me some time searching.

A lot of things to read and study, thanks for the links and the help.

That Dell, it certain looks very cheap(I was a bit tempted)… but I'm going to take myself out of the comfort zone and try to build my first PC, hopefully I'll get it right.

Thanks again for all your help.
