How much does a power pack cost for these ?

Edit: I followed the link :) $AU10.67 for those interested.

just use a spare phone charger that takes USB. It runs off micro usb port

      • +2

Very bad advice. Not all phone chargers have enough power.

        https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberry…

        • That link states "The maximum power the Raspberry Pi can use is 1 Amp. If you need to connect a USB device that will take the power requirements above 1 Amp, then you must connect it to an externally-powered USB hub."

As others have mentioned, the pi isn't happy if the voltage drops. If you connect USB devices that draw more than 1A when combined with the pi itself, or use an under-spec (less than 1-1.5A or so for headroom)or a cheapo no name power supply that cannot supply 1A without the voltage sagging you'll have issues.

Any semi-recent, official phone charger will be 2A/5V and will work perfectly with the a rpi 3.
I'd use an official samsung/htc/whatever 2A phone charger over a no-name chinese '2.5A' one any day (and I have with my rpi 1 2 and 3 with no issues).

      • Supposed to be 2.5A charger

      • +1

Yeahi run mine on a 5.3v 2amp using retro pie no problems here. I have got a 2.5amp charger on its way tho.

        • -1

          Guessing you haven't overclocked?

        • @PainToad: no only when i get my correct charger. Plays most ps1/n64 but struggles on super smash bros and golden eye

        • I've received supply warnings in Kodi when using similar, it needs to be 2.5amp and it needs to be quality.

      • not any phone charger. i use an IPAD charger for mine which has enough amperage to power the raspberry

    • +2

If you don't already have a drawer/box full of old power supplies, you are probably not the target market for this.

      • -6

Most phone chargers wont supply enough power and damage the unit

        • +1

          damage the unit

          NOpe.

        • -1

          @Diji1: The SD can corrupt

        • +3

          @asa79: which isn't "the unit."

        • @redpen: With is part of the unit, no SD no Pi

        • +1

          @asa79:
From my experience it doesn't corrupt the unit. Linux is pretty robust. Back before I realised my power plug pack didn't have enough Amp, it was constantly sending my RasPi into an endless boot cycle.
Did it again with an external HDD and raspi camera.

        • +1

          @asa79:

although the reddit thread talks about sd card corruption in my experience running off an underpowered power supply just takes it into a bootloop. plus its easy to clone an sd card to prevent corruption.

i have corrupted various sd cards before but not necessarily from an underpowered raspberry.
ejecting from a computer unsafely or in a digital camera are ways that have corrupted my sd cards.

@rasserie: You should post up in there that you know better then them, not in here

        • @asa79:

          what do u mean

        • @asa79:

what do you mean when u say i know better than them?

        • +2

          @rasserie:
asa79 linked the reddit thread like as if were some source of authority but I had a look through it all and none of it was substantiated.
Low voltage damage for the electronics on the raspi is simply untrue. You may or may not experience digital corruption but electronic damage is near impossible. You're near infinitely more likely to damage it by touching PCB and frying the circuit with static discharge.

But to your point, you gave a reply and asa79 had no rebuttal and took offence; instead redirecting the discussion away and assuming you're a know-it-all. It's simply just sheep/crowd/mob following and shit-talking to someone who's majored in electrical eng.

        • @Blitzfx:

          aha i see your point.

i have the slower original pi and this version.
i ran xbmc on the original and home assistant/zway with razpberry zwave GPIO daughterboard on the newer updated version.

i also have a USB powered motion sensor connected so it is crucial for me to have a proper power supply.

like almost everyone else i 'accidentally' used low wattage power supplies as a test on both versions of raspberry pi and i have had no sd card corruption. i hope it stays that way :)

i have no intention on being a i know it all. in fact far from it. i learn thru mistakes and i have lots to learn. i hope asa79 sees that.

    • Banggood has power pack for $8.70 Delivered with AU plug Banggood

Get 2.5 amp or higher for raspberry pi 3.
I use the 3A ones you can get for $2.50

    • +1

      Thanks @Darthmule.

    • +1

      Got a link for those?

    • 1A might do, but the Pi is a bit fussy about voltage tolerance.
If too low, it will let you know with that colourful square in the display.

      • that goes against the recommendation.
i have a 1A supply that just goes into the colorful square.

in the end i had to use an IPAD charger.

      • Or the lightning bolt on Kodi.

    • +1

      2.50??? From where?

      • +1

$2.50 of petrol to drive to the local tip and fish around for a free one.

I want to know where you can buy a 3A one as well. 3A is quite large. Most places sell shoddy 0.5A-1.0A ones.

    • +2

Ahem sorry make that around $3.50

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5V-3A-Converter-Adapter-MICRO-US…

Please get a power switch as well instead of yanking the cable out of your pi to turn it back on.
      https://core-electronics.com.au/micro-usb-in-line-power-swit…

Or get one with both power and a switch in the one cable.
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-Plug-5V-3A-Micro-USB-Power-Ad…

      • Price is great. Thanks Darthmule.

These have hard-wired cables which makes it difficult to use the same charger for other purposes like charging devices with USB Type-C or Mini-USB ports.

Are there ones that have a standard output USB port (instead of a hard-wired cable) so that we can plug in relevant cables to charge different devices?

        Thanks

    Thanks Kumar. :P

  • Went to buy all three together, but only have the option of USD$5.43 or USD$6.06 for postage. Seems a bit rich.

Since I am still waiting on the case from Litb from a mid-late November purchase, I think I'll hold off and see if that one ever arrives before making another purchase.

    • I found that the free shipping option was only possible if you purchased a single item. So you just do multiple orders.

  • The red boxes seem to have gone, but I got me a Blue one:-). I'm getting that many Rasberries it needs to stand out…

  • what about some heatsinks to go with the pi3 please :)

  • Just got one, thanks OP!

  • +1

Are these good for browsing ozbargain:P?
Anything else you need to get with it?

  • Have 3 items in my cart that state free shipping but when checkout have to pay min $7.26????

    • +1

I found that the free shipping option was only possible if you purchased a single item at a time. Means you have to do multiple orders.

  • Can anyone explain primarily what this would be used for?

    • Throw it at the neighbour's cat which is trying to do a dump in the flower bed.

    • +2

They are pretty good media centers. But you can do anything that a low powered computer can do. If you're a coder you can do heaps with these things. I'm using one of mine to monitor the power production on my solar panels through the RS232 interface on the inverter.

      • That sounds awesome!

    • Kodi and Retropie…..and a shitload of maker projects.

  • Out of stock on the Raspberry. I think i got the last one. because its now full price.

  • yeah, had in cart, by time I got to checkout price had gone up ….

    • Sorry :(

when i started there were 4 got mine in and hit pay then when i came back out the price was up.

  • Thanks OP. Bought a sensor kit.

    • Yet you didn't + the deal.

  • thanks a lot OP ! I finally ordered the case and sensor kit.

  • Missed the Raspberry Pi, anyone seen a similar deal anywhere?

  • During summer in some parts of Australia that aluminium case would be more akin to the Raspberry Pi coffin. Even with the fan it's a bit dodgy

  • All three gone.

  • Expired :-(

  • Yep, all back to regular prices now

    • Did you manage to secure any?

  • The aluminium case is back down to USD 7.99 but shipping is over $2…?
