Getting Home from Melbourne Airport Cheap with Kids Uber, Taxi What Else?

I want to get home (Victoria 3194) CHEAP from Melbourne Airport.
2 adults, 2 kids age 2 and 7, a fair bit of baggage

When we came to the airport it was at a decent hour so Skybus took us there $70 1 way family ticket

However we are arriving after midnight so apparently Skybus is not available now after 7pm

Uber will definitely not fit us 4 + 4 large suitcases in a family sedan

Uber xl I am not sure about + baby seat situation

Taxi is very expensive so very last resort

Anybody got any ideas how to get home at a resonable rate (under $100) $80 preferred after midnight on a week night?

skybus is not available now after 7pm

Where did you get this from?

    Skybus is available 24/7! >> https://www.skybus.com.au/timetables/

It is because it is FAPAS (Frankston & Peninsula Airport Shuttle)
4:20am - 7:25pm, 7 days a week they need not, Skybus to Southern Cross.

Ah, that makes more sense! thanks!

  • I have not seen any UberX with child seats. Legally, your 2 year old must be in a child seat in an UberX. So, unless you have your own child seat that you can install temporarily, an UberX would not be an option.

  • Have you considered a one way car rental… pick it up from the airport, drive home and drop it off in Frankston or nearby the next day. Worth getting a quote and seeing what that would cost. I would think the baby seat and one way fee may kill this option.

    • Don't think it will help the OP - most places close at midnight or even earlier. Cost of one way and being an airport location will easily >$100 the OP would like to pay. There's probably the cheap mystery rental from Hertz but that's pot luck as to what car you'll be allocated.

Just tried a random date with Hertz = came to $132 with baby seat and drop off in Frankston.

MEL Airport car rentals are open till 2 AM.

I live in Melbourne. I was working for IBM in Qld and they were paying for flights home each fortnight and a rental car up there.

I asked about getting home from the airport and they gave me 2 taxi vouchers. Told them it might be cheaper for me to hire a car to get home and back … but they said that was against policy. Fair enough

Following week I gave them taxi receipts for $370.

After that, it was ok for me to hire a car for the weekend

  • I have no idea what prices are like in Melbourne so I'm just going to go out on a limb and suggest things that might be wrong, but can you take public transport out? Maybe even for 3/4 of the way and then taxi from there?

You might even taxi it to the next closest station or similar if there is an airport cost?

    • Non existent public transport after midnight

      • +1

Depends on the day of the week. Friday's and Saturday's trains operate all night.

Would have to taxi to the nearest station (Broadmeadows), then train to Flinders then change to Frankston line then taxi home.

PT fares would be $4.30 ea for the adults and $2.15 for the 7 year old, totalling $10.85. The taxi to Broadmeadows will be at least $25-30. This option would involve horrible connection times.

Alternatively, skybus to Southern Cross then the train to Frankston.

Actually on second thought. You've spent all this money on the holiday itself. What's an extra $150 for a cab that will be easy for you and your fam?

        • Would you want to take your 2 year old to Broadmeadows train station after midnight?

        • @Qkumber: If I was prioritising cost over ease, yes I would have no issues taking my family to Broadmeadows Station after midnight.

  • Scumtree?

  • Yeah after 20-30 hr flight prob dont want to drive a rental or public transport, scroogetree looks like so far leading choice

  • PM Sent

  • I don't know if this is feasible at night, or how often the bus runs, but you can take a 901 bus from the airport to Westmeadows train station and then take a train to the City.

    • westmeadows doesn't have a trainstation as far as i know :P

      • Sorry my bad. it's Broadmeadows.

  • I looked at that or Dandenong too, but with a 2 year old after 20hrs+ flying public transport is crossed off

Taxi.. Spend little bit more comfort then public transport. You spent too much on Holiday+Flight then why not extra $100 for family's comfort. ( I know Uber won't do it with little kids due to no baby seat available)

  • Reminds me of this:
    Needs to seat 20! NEXT!

On a serious note, what booking a private transfer? Should be able to organise a van or something for fixed fee.
I'm sure some of the smaller operators would be accommodating with timing

Park at the airport while you are away?

Have you got a mate or 2 who can pick you up in exchange for beer / food ?

I’ll get neged for this but you mentioned a 2 and 7 y.o. , you arrive at midnight , you said it was a 20 hour flight….You’re going to be tired , they’ll be tired and grumpy. There’s no way public transport is a good idea.

Just get a taxi to pick you up. Yes it’ll cost more but be practical for a second.

You could look into a private transfer. They might do a flat rate to your post code.

  • Park the car at Broadmeadows train station or as close to the airport as you can. Short taxi or the 901 bus gets you to the car and then come pick everyone up.

(non FAPAS) Skybus to Southern Cross then taxi from there?

  • +1

    Try this : https://www.southeastairportshuttle.com.au

I used them twice, they are very reliable and reasonable price :)

    • Hi Marcsie, they claim to pick-up from someone's home.
Since it will be done for every passenger, in your experience, did this add to the journey time significantly?
Appreciate any feedback you might have. Thanks in advance.

1st time, from Mount Waverley to Melbourne Airport, they picked me up from home with 12 seats Van, there was only another lady passenger, they charged me $60, that was in May/2017

2nd time, from Melbourne Airport back to Mount Waverley, only me, they charged me $55, that was in June/2017.

        • Thanks for the info :-) Might give it a try next time.

  • Never use taxi.

I actually refused to use uber until last month after a really disenchanting experience at the airport.

Not only were they expensive, but also extremely rude. My cabbie was swearing over the phone and had the worst attitude problem ever.

  • My issue with this is whilst you can legally take a two-year old in a taxi without a car seat in Vic I'm not sure I'd want to. The lack of public transport to the airport is absurd and puts kids in unnecessary danger.

There is http://www.bubstaxi.com.au/ - I have never used them though. That said it's almost $300 for you to get from the airport to your place.

Other than family or friends I am not sure what the solution is…

  • Found a scumtree/referral option for 100 door to door it will have to do, don't want to hand over a dollar to the greedy taxi, which will cost 150+ because 1. Has to be maxi 2. Night tariff

    • For about $150 you can get a VHA car (KIA Carnival People Mover) you can select child seats when booking https://www.vha.com.au/ more than your budget but very reliable.

  • Stay in a hotel with hotel transfer service, then put the next day?

  • Can taxi legally take any age infant from newborn with no seat? We just hold them?

    • Yes they can.

  • Walk/hitch hike would be the cheapest.

  • Shebah is really well priced (cheaper than taxi) and can include car seats. You need to make sure a female is travelling with you then males can also, or females by themselves. My trip was only $36 and usually close to $60 in a taxi. Only thing is the booking is a bit clunky, you can download the app to see a price approx however booking is done via the Facebook site. I am sure someone would be available with a larger car.

    • Why no males alone? Sexism or femenists?

      • Just women who want to feel safe, drivers and passengers

        • Sounds like someone is calling men aggressors and women victims of aggression… I feel discriminated against.

  • Melb really needs a train service. As i live 3km from the city, when I travel alone its the train and bus from Broadmeadows for $6, then an Uber from the airport to home for cheap.
