Seems to be pretty readily available for under $300 online at Kogan ($279 + shipping) and a few other notable stores (DWI $269).

Versatile range but very much just a kit lens. Pretty sure it first appeared in a kit with the Nikon D90 some years back. Not fast glass that's for sure, but will suit the needs of some.

    • This will be Aus stock with Harvey Norman. DWI/Kogan etc provide grey market lenses. Exactly the same lens from either company but just different warranty which matters to some.

yep 3.5 - 5.6 is kind of shitastic

you may as well put that money into some 2.8 glass probably not from nikon

Don't forget that this lens is for use with DX cameras only and gives an equivalent of 27 - 157mm lens (compared to full frame) after factoring in the 1.5x crop factor due to the smaller sensor used in DX cameras.

    • Well duh. Does a superzoom starting from 18mm even exist in 35mm format?

      • you've missed the point, this one starts at 27mm

        • No. You've missed the point. It starts at 27mm equivalent. I've never heard of a superzoom starting at 18mm before, so why would anyone think this is an 18-105mm full frame lens? Its very obviously for crop sensors.

  • 18-140 is better

      18-200 is even better.

      • Agreed. Buy one second hand off ebay.

        • That’s exactly what I did. Got a second hand 18-200 and am super happy with a single lens solution for travelling. Tad bit on the heavy side but it’s a dslr. Though I hear that the compact type ones are pretty good too now.

      • Sharpness is compromised more on the 18-200 and it is an older lens. It isn't all about zoom range.

        • Ken Rockwell is a bit picky pointing out that this 2008 plastic mount lens is fuzzier @ 18mm than the base 18-55mm lens however he makes some good points as to why he considers this not worth bothering with. As a rank newbie to "Cameras you can get things wrong with"[tm] I'm finding his advice useful, tho acknowledge it is a very subjective field.

"The photos are nice and sharp most of the time, but if you're looking closely, the 18-105mm is Nikon's fuzziest lens in the corners at 18mm. Even the $100 18-55mm is better."

          @terrys:

Don't trust Ken Rockwell. Double and triple check everything he writes on independent web sites. He revises his site when criticized but I have definitely seen him review lenses he has no 1st hand experience with. And some of his ideas will ruin your photography if you take them onboard without checking. I know his fans will slam me for saying so but it needs to be said

        • @syousef: No time anyway:-). I've just got a AF Nikkor 28-85 f/3.5-4.5 to plonk on front of the D3400, and am having to work out how to drive a lens. At least it's only a few seconds before the photos are developed, and you can wash the film and start again.
          I don't think 1/125 sec and F5.6 is going to cut it…

18-400 from Tamron is the one and only for the hobbyist DX user.

  • If you like taking potraits then look for Yongnuo 35 or 50mm lens. They are half the price and quality is almost the same. These are prime lens i am not sure wheather they have normal zoom lens

    • The cameras these go on don't do digital zoom. A "prime" lens is fixed - you "zoom" by moving yourself closer…
