      “A few” 😎

      • Since 2:24pm this afternoon they've likely sold most of them if not sold out by now.

      • So i doubt if i turn up tomorrow there will be stock :(

And please don't forget to patch these.

    WDMyCloud Multiple Vulnerabilities

MyCloud versions that need patching include MyCloud, MyCloudMirror, My Cloud Gen 2, My Cloud PR2100, My Cloud PR4100, My Cloud EX2 Ultra, My Cloud EX2, My Cloud EX4, My Cloud EX2100, My Cloud EX4100, My Cloud DL2100, and My Cloud DL4100. Products on firmware version 4.x aren't affected.

Most My clouds are running v 4.x (from factory) now so looks like it's not such an issue as it appears. The bigger problem with version 4.x firmwares is that they have some poorly written software which causes them to endlessly index files when they start to get more than a few in there. This results in constant drive use, no sleeping of the drive and slow transfer speeds. Can be fixed but it's a manual hack that should have been fixed with a firmware patch.

Edit: this is based on my personal experience with a My Cloud bought in 2015.

  • Get the newest firmware. Recently a backdoor has been found on these drives.

edit: whoops, I see someone else beat me to it.

"with admin username "mydlinkBRionyg" and password "abc12345cba," which is hardcoded into the binary and cannot be changed"

Are you (profanity) kidding me lol.

Are you (profanity) kidding me lol.

It's been rumoured that WD will resolve the vulnerability by officially renaming the "WD My Cloud" service to "WD Our Cloud"

        • Check the username. WD has been infiltrated by D-Link.

        • @alvian:
Yes, I notice that - I wonder if Dlink did the controller or is this just co-incidental?

      • Please don't insult my professionalism. I use copy-paste to ensure my source code and DLink are identical.

    • Pray tell how one "hardcodes into the binary"?? and what exactly is the "binary"?? Perhaps she means embedded in the firmware, which is easily patched…

      • and what exactly is the "binary"??

        The ROM…

        • Hardcoding into the binary perhaps a binary file, which again is easily overwritten via firmware update…

U sure there is a ROM, if so > Solution: Upgrade FIRMWARE to version 2.30.174

          http://gulftech.org/advisories/WDMyCloud%20Multiple%20Vulner…

Anyway I would have put this on it:

          http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/forum/t-2222984/other-operati…

        • @cryptos: " there is a ROM, if so >"
Yes, there is a Read Only memory…

        • @terrys: A ROM or a PROM?

        • @cryptos: Reading the report, it seems the EPROM can be updated to block the PHP script, but the backdoor user and password are coded in the original blob.:-/

"Researchers also found the existence of a "classic backdoor"—with admin username "mydlinkBRionyg" and password "abc12345cba," which is hardcoded into the binary and cannot be change".

Not really a problem - unless you want to give it a public face so you can use it in the cloud…

          Ooops.

I'm still considering one as a back-up on the LAN, and bar its MAC from external connections…

  • For $80 I guess it's a pretty good deal, but overall if you're after a quality NAS I don't know that I'd recommend these. Just a few things (software) sloppily done that detract from otherwise good hardware.

    • Yeah maybe not worth my time trying to get one.

    • I'd recommend these. I use 2 for my current streaming via an Android Kodi box & it works flawlessly over Wi-Fi. I'm only streaming 1080p max though but it does also handle x265 content without issue too.

      • Hey @281982, can you please answer my question below, if you have tried this of course? It says that if you plug in another USB3 drive to the USB3 socket, that this provides extra storage. Does that mean that the extra storage can be seen as storage that can be read and written too from the gigabit network (Like for me adding an 8TB USB3 seagate storage drive, that I could then see from everywhere on my network, right now I am taking it to my computer room to add new files, then taking it back to my theatre room to watch my "home movies" or holiday photos that I transferred onto it)
I have been thinking of buying a NAS, but I really do not need any fancy software, I just want a storage dump that can be accessed in the whole home wired gigabit network. Answered below with this youtube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmYi2oPYr3Y

        • Hey Op54, I've not tried this method myself so sorry can't comment. Have you tried this method but with a home router? Alot of them these days have usb 2 or 3 ports that allows for standard USB "network" storage capabilities.

        • @281982: We did try the USB port on our new NetComm NBN modem/ Gigabit router, but the speed of read and write with USB3 was barely usable on the network. The network we have is Gagabit, but the modem/ router is clearly a poor quality one when it comes to using it as a cheap network storage share function.

        • @Op54: I've heard similar reports as well, shame. Sounds like a dedicated Network-attached drive or NAS unit is the way to go.

        • @Op54, Yes, you can access it as a network share.

  • Any possibility we can 'dehusk' these and use the internal drive as a normal desktop drive?

  • My upload speed is 0.9Mbps, how long will it take for 2tb?

    • +4

      7 months 14 days 5 hours 41 minutes 13 seconds

Or you connect it to the same network or plug it in with USB and you can fill those 2TB waaaaaay quicker…

Well, that defies the main purpose of a cloud drive. hmm.

          Slow backups?

  • Does Officeworks match their own price? Do JB and HN price beat?

    • Highly doubtful either will match given it's not advertised by Office Works, or listed on their website.

The receipt listed here wont be of much use as its listing a clearance item.

      • Head office helps, they are more interested in a.Happy customers b.Repeating customers, hint hint.

  • Nation wide?

  • Nice find OP :-)
From the WD user manual for firmware 4 and up, it says that the USB3 input can be used for additional storage, so you could add, say a Seagate 8TB drive to this unit and get your 8TB unit on the gigabit network too?
Page 13 of 4779-705103.pdf says USB 3.0 port - Connects to a USB hard drive for additional storage

I've just visited OW Taren Point NSW, label price is $199(Clearance, last one) down from $249. I showed one of the staff the OP's receipt I had printed and he scanned the item, it shows $149 on the system and he couldn't pricematch :(

Online has the 4TB for $170, so if you were looking at their online price you may as well go the 4TB for the extra $21. https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/wd-4tb-my-… (If you can find any stock anywhere that is, not available online)

      • I saw that price this morning before I left home but I didn't see any stock in-store :(

        • They have a couple of 2TB and one 4TB unit at Joondalup WA store, but through online it says they have none of either. Definitely worth checking other local stores visually if you are after one.

    • Same here… I'm waiting to hear from head office… they said they would call my local and 'sort it out'

      • Just an update, Head office ended up sorting out my local, so I went back to receive it for $80… A bit of mucking around, but got my way in the end… Ha. Hint, hint.

  • sold out

    • What store?

  • Can confirm. SOLD OUT.

  • JOONDALUP STILL HAVE two 2TB UNITS (Not showing through online store check). FYI, we checked online for all our local stores north of Perth WA, and all showed zero stock of the 2TB or the 4TB, we happened to be at Joondalup shopping centre just now, and on looking in at OW Joondalup, they currently have two of the 2TB Cloud (No price on the shelf for them, just said clearance), they also had one 4TB unit (Several of the 6TB and 8TB, but I do not think they are listed as clearance).
We just picked up one of the 4TB for $170 from Joondalup, it will do what we need (Stops me thinking about going for a full NAS just yet), and the price is fine for me. We will be adding a 4TB WD standard external drive, and a Seagate 8TB Backup Plus HUB (From the last Amazon deal). The HUB provides and additional 2 USB3 powered ports. All drives will appears as separate shares through the WD Cloud NAS Linux software.
We asked one of the staff for the prices on the 2TB and 4TB drives, and she said that she was sure that their 2TB is the same price as the Online I quoted her of around $150 (I would still prefer the 4TB myself), not the $80 special above. (If someone wants to try and get them to match another store, they have two brand new units at Joondalup to haggle about).

  • Sold out at Bourke street.

    Just went in.

    • I didnt even bother with it.

  • .
THANKS niagraBzO for posting this I went to Officeworks Coburg and they had one on the shelf @ $149 when I showed your post and your receipt
the staff input the part number into their system and said it was on clearance and did it for $80 :) so a big thank you and now I must remember to update the firmware !

    • How's the realestate there? I'm moving to Coburg, clearly less mucking around there. O.o

Oh great… Happy you got the deal

  • Anyone know if there is a difference in the drive/enclosure between the 2 different packaging models they have, I found two (a friend is at OW and has 2 in his hands right now), one is in a box twice the size to the other, unfortunately they are not matching the $80.00 price, but he's going to leave them on hold until tomorrow (which they are willing to do), and try and get some love from head office.

    • ;-)

Sold out at Vermont Officeworks but I got the last one! The guy behind the counter spent about 10 mins tracking down the last one and nearly freaked out at the price ($149), I asked if he'd match the $80 and copped a grimace from the manager. In the end I got it for $80 :)

This is my first experience with Ozbargain, off to a good start!

  • Update, just got the 4Tb model from Good Guys price match… And 2Tb price match at Harvey Norman… I'm My Clouded out now..
