ThinkPad E470 or Alternative Laptops??

Hey Bargainers!
I’m looking for a laptop for just Uni and light gaming. Doing some research, I was really interested in the ThinkPad e470 or the e570. Doing further research, I discovered that e470 has better battery life and is practically the same just different screen sizes.

ThinkPad e470 specs are:
Intel Core i5-7200U Processor Win10 Home 64 14.0"FHD IPS, 8GB(4+4) DDR4-2133MHz SoDIMM, NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB, 1TB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm, 2.5", SATA3, 1 Year warranty, 3 Cell Li-Polymer Battery 45WH, Intel Dual Band Wireless AC(2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.1

Though, I do want to upgrade the ram to 16gb and the cpu to an i7, which will make the price $1,199.00 (but then this exact same laptop was going for https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/320868 825 back in September)
My options are in listed in the poll!
THANKS!

Since its for uni, maybe look at something with better battery life and compactness

I think battery life wouldn't be an issue since there is power points everywhere. Compactness hmmm the weight of the e470 is 1.87kg. Macbook pro 13" 2.06kg so I wouldn't mind I guess. I really don't mind a macbook pro but you can't run games on it.

      • Nah, i was comparing it to a mackbook air, xiaomi air.
In that case, i5 and 8gb is a good choice.

        • oohh snap how could i forget about xiaomi!
Hows the xiaomi pro/air both which go for 1k, compared to the e470?

  • Dell Outlook should have some Latitudes on sale. Honestly why do you even need a laptop? Unis have a computer everywhere in their campus.

Speaking as someone who had a laptop for uni and gave up carrying it in mid-way — 2kg is heavy if you think you're going to be carrying that in every day. How are you going to protect it from rain to/from uni? Are there really power points everywhere? Does everyone else have a laptop? Are they fighting for power points? Are you sure you're not better off with a tablet and a Bluetooth keyboard to take notes? (At least it will have better battery life and be lighter).

  • Hey buddy enable chat.

Have a Brand New e470. Exactly what you after

i5 and 8GB RAM is a good sweet spot for price and power, light gaming will also do fine

    • Hows the xiaomi pro/air both which go for 1k, compared to the e470(i5 8gb)?

      • although you are paying an extra of on average $200-300, you do have a massive boost in specs, including a better battery life and dedicated GPU (on the Xiaomi Pro), if you're willing to pay that extra, it is definitely worth it,

        • i just got offered an e470 with an i7/16gb. How would you say that is up against the Xiamoi pro?

        • @optionalpotato101:

it really, depends on how much you're really playing games.

          less than 1hr/day = E470

more than 1hr/day = Xiaomi Pro

usually you shouldn't stress the CPU for a long time, hence the need for a GPU. What titles do you play?

        • Im being offered 940$ for the e470 which is decent.
Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro - CORE i5 8GB + 256GB -AU $1029.60 currently at gearbest.
I plan to play csgo and rust, just those two to be honest or game in that genre.

        • @optionalpotato101:

I actually wasn't aware the E470 had a GeForce 940MX already, considering the titles you play that is the best laptop you can buy right now. People have compared the MX150 to a GT1030, a bit better compared to a 940MX. This is obviously up to you to decide. But if you do plan to play more games in the future than the Xiaomi would be better (specs-wise).

          Xiaomi for gaming

          Lenovo for general productivity, durability

  • Go with the recently released ThinkPad E480/E580. Smaller bezel, lighter construction, USB Type-C and 8th gen Core CPU (when comparing to E470/E570).
