Best Buffet You've Ever Been To?

I'm currently sitting in a chinese buffet that cost me $12 for unlimited servings and great food. So I was thinking what does ozbargain consider a "great" buffet? What's the best buffet you've been too?

Comments

  • Agree with breakfast buffets in German hotels. Top, top quality and better than some restaurants.

Stayed at one on a recent trip to Europe, food was amazing, fresh and there was a wide variety of meats. We compared each breakfast on our trip to the one in Germany, none topped it. Probably the best coffee I've had at the same place too.

Also had a very nice buffet at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. Lots of options, they had a crepe bar which made crepes to order on the spot, which was tasty.

    • Sounds yummy and fancy

  • Westin Nusa Dua Bali. Fantastic selection of hot/cold healthy/unhealthy food and a guy making superb pancakes to order with whatever fillings you want and served with ice cream. After a week there I needed some serious time in the gym.

Hilton Sydney also had a very good one. A few years back you could get great deals at Sydney hotels (got two nights there incl breakfast for $250 once) but those days seem to have gone!

    • Both sound yummy

    • Being a Hilton Diamond member, the Sydney Hilton combined with the Amex cashback offers has been good for a few stays even though I live in Sydney. As a diamond member you get the buffet breakfast free so also been so good breakfast buffets in Asia such as Bangkok Millennium Hilton.

      • I can't get amex cause of my age but man I would love too have it

  • I'm not normally a buffet fan however Edogin at the Mulia in the Bali has a Japanese Teppanyaki Buffet we went to on Thursday night that was amazing. The night we went they had go with 3 and pay for 2 so works out at about $72 a person. They have sashimi, so Salmon, Tuna and other types I don't know what I was eating but being an ozbargainer had to get my monies worth just in the sashimi. They also had Oysters, Lobster, Prawns, heaps of meat and fish cooked Teppanyaki style, lots of desserts.

    • Never stayed in Mulia in bali.but in Jakarta is superb hotel with great food. They also have same name restaurant there Edogin

  • The Kuta Beach Heritage Hotel - Breakfast Buffet was on sale for $7.50 per person and was immense with omelette chef and the lot. Around 200-300 different things to choose from.

      Jesus that sounds incredible

  • Any Perthians here enjoyed the KFC all-you-can-eat back in the day? It was awesome as a teenager..:)

    • What about Pizza Heart all you can eat. When they actually had a restaurant (not just takeaway)

      • +1

I remember that.. was the bomb.. definitely nostalgic for me nowadays nothing compares.

  • Dinner at the Grand Hyatt, Bangkok. Not cheap but the food and setting are great. Having someone carve off fresh sashimi for you is a good way to get your baht's worth out of it.

Honorable mention to a similar but cheaper buffet at the Sofitel next to Central Lad Prao, also Bangkok.

    • +1

Agree on both. Outstanding..the Landmark is also worth an honourable mention in BKK. They used to do an Indian buffet which was bloody sublime if you're a lover of currys

      • Thanks, I'll try to check that out next time!

  • Smorgy's and pizza hut! Though no longer around. I heard pizza hut all you can eat might make a come back.

  • Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo, if you ever get the chance to travel there. One of the best Hotel Buffets that I have ever seen.

  • +1

Shoutout to Mori Japanese seafood cafe in Glebe Pt Rd Sydney. Lots of rice in the sushi etc, but if you stick to the salmon and tempura you'll get your money's worth. $30 iirc.

  • The Market, Hotel Icon in Hong Kong. Sometimes features innovative and unique dishes not normally found in a buffet. The variety and quality is amazing. Bookings are essential as it is regularly packed.

  • +1

Back in the day when i was young and broke there were a slew of $5 all you can eat chinese buffets. Anyone remember the one in the burke st mall downstairs back in the 90s? I used to love taking full advantage of that.

    • The Melbourne Bar! Fried eggplant and crispy noodles… plus the pool tables and air hockey - I wish I could have lived there :D

    • Me and my mate used to go there after pizza hut buffet shut down around 2006. On the 2nd visit we saw cockroaches scurrying about so we told a waiter. He thanked us and went over and stomped the crap out of it, guts and crap oozing out from under his shoe. We 'lost' our appetite and never went back.

  • Buffets are disgusting. Seriously just watch how people treat the food…coughing all over it, touching it and putting it back etc. Usually it's a whole lot of quantity with little quality.

    • +8

      username checks out

    • But you see… we are not after “usually” ….we want “best”…

  • and children in africa are starving

    • +1

I wonder…. if I don't go to a buffet today, how many children will be saved?

  • +2

If you like indian/pakistani food and are in Sydney, then head to Lal Qila near Darling Harbour.
$25 with dessert. Well worth it.

Watch out for the crazy queues though. On flip side, food is absolutely fresh as its going out the window non stop.

    • +1

Thanks for this its on my list of future dinner places with the family.

      • No worries. Just call and check if they do buffet for dinner

        • Oh haha yeah lol sweet good idea. I automatically assumed they did dinner lol silly me. I will double check.

  • +1

st george football club. If i had only one choice i rather eat quality over quantity.

  • Had a mind blowing breakfast buffet at Intercontinental Thalasso at Bora Bora, included in room rates

  • Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace Las Vegas. I went during July the 4th and they had a special menu (although I think it might've cost more than usual) it was amazing!

  • +1

Rather out of the way but I have vivid memories of the BBQ buffet at http://www.moonlite.com in Kentucky. Had two plates with a tablespoon of each dish and there were still things I hadn’t tried.

  • +2

Each time I go to Bangkok I try a different buffet at one of the high end hotels. Using the booking engine www.eatigo.com gets you 50-60% off the standard price so often works out to $15-$20 per person. Had breakfast at the Radisson Blu Sukhumvit a few months ago and it was great. They even had ice cream and cakes on offer which was a bit strange but I figured it was lunch time back home :)

+1 for jagoya.in KL definately best..

What use to be the 4 points by sheraton had a good buffett until maybe 5 or 6 years ago.. and then down hill from there i think most buffets in australia are the same. Get less but charged more.

They use to all have large pacific oysters now small sydney rock.
They use all to have sashimi now just basic nigiri
They use to all have large tiger prawns now you'll be lucky to get medium king prawns.. everyone will give you vennamei nowdays.

Crab legs are the new thing these days but they are bland and taste nothing like they do in america or canada.

Bugs are good but haed to come by. And lobsters are even rarer.

Now days the cost for 2 seafood buffets at a hotel id rather pay for a nicely done seafood platter and a bottle of wine.

  • Breakfast buffet at paris las vegas.
    Buffet at rio las vegas
    Buffet at jogoya KL malsysia
Buffet at royal plaza on scotts singapore

  • +1

Lunch Buffet at MGM Macau. It’s a seafood lovers dream, I’ve planned a stopover on my next flight just to go back.

  • Mulia Hotel in Bali. Best quality foods including lobsters.

  • As an Asian food lover, I will have to nominate the Genting Resort Coffee Terrance Chinese New Year dinner buffet. ~RM50 (~AUD16) all authentic Asian Hawker food that you can think of made and cooked for you right on the spot as you order plus much more - all variety of authentic Asian deserts.

  • Nothing in recent memory, but the W Taipei- The Kitchen Table circa 2014. Price was about $70aud with an amazing selection of seafood.
Not only that but the kitchen would whip up random things and come around to offer it to diners.

  • +1

San:Qi as the four seasons in Mumbai.

Not a typical buffet as such. You order unlimited items from the menu which are prepared fresh and brought to your tables.

Amazing quality and variety! The best (worst) part is unlimited alcohol(including spirits) was included.

    Cost: ~70(AUD)

    • +1

Oh! You just reminded me of the Shabu Shabu places in Japan with All You Can Drink as well - challenge accepted!

  • We went to Bally’s Sterling Brunch in Vegas 10 years ago and I still dream about it. It was $50USD each but had unlimited Perrier Jouet Belle Époque champagne (which costs $200 a bottle), lobster, oysters, caviar, Alaskan crab, fillet Mignon, amazing desserts etc. We stayed for over 3 hours drank a bunch of bottles! It’s still open but double the price now and the food and drink quality has apparently lowered.
We also got a Groupon for the Caesar’s Palace buffet when we went in March which was great value and had a good variety of offerings. Even the vegan in the family was impressed, which is a rarity!

    • Sounds yummy

The best buffet I've ever seen is one I haven't been to.

In my view buffet is the devolution of food. People getting up and down to get food from a bain marie reminds me of watching animals drink from a water trough.

When I go to dinner I want to talk to the people i'm seated with - not have people standing up and moving around to get more food.

    Ugh. Awful.

    • +4

      ok

    • He probably made this comment after he just went to a buffet.. I know this is me sometimes after a massive buffet. Yes I just assumed his gender.. deal with it.

    • Off topic.

      (Best buffet…).

  • Sizzling Mongolian in StLucia, Brisbane.

They have a sort of salad bar with didn't chopped veg and diced raw meat and sauces, you put a plate together and then this guy cold up up on a huge wok. You can go back over and over etc

    • We used to have 4 Mongolian BBQ in Melbourne, including my suburb… sadly I think there is only 1 left now.

Funny thing though - no matter what combination of meat, vegetables and sauces you choose, all the bowls tasted the same :D

      • So true. Still one or two in Adelaide.

  • Marriott Surfers Paradise

  • Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.

  • Any buffet that doesn't give you food poisoning is good in my book. There's a reason they call them "sneeze pits".

  • +2

best one I been to is at the conservatory crown but its very expensive but for oz. bargain I would recommend Okami Japanese Restaurant in Footscray Melbourne 32 a head , good value and good food

    • ill be in Melbourne in a few days… would you know which branch is closest to the city? thanks

      • +1

Caulfield North Okami is closest to city

    • +1

Okami is great value if you enjoy sashimi. I go there for unlimited green tea icecream

  • You aren’t enjoying whenever you’re having buffets. Assume the owners expect each guest eat quantity of 3 persons, you’re consuming some food at 1/3 quality as normal especially in cost, nutrients and hygiene. Used to fond of buffets during uni life but I learned that less means more.

  • +3

Windjammer on The Voyager of the Seas

  • The All inclusive buffets at our hotel for Breakfast Lunch and Dinner when we stayed in Mauritius, the food was amazing.

  • Probably Kings buffet back in the day at Crown. Long gone and havent been to the newer one.

  • Food fantasy Gold Coast was brilliant but expensive ….I probably enjoy a meal even more if it's well price…

  • Warren.

  • Tweed Heads Golf Club - $30 and has a great range of seafood!

I went to a $15 buffet at a Thai restaurant last week. For $15 it was great, there was fried rice, boiled rice, about 6 different curries, pad Thai, chicken wings and a few other dishes. Our logic was that if we had of ordered off the menu we probably would have paid more than $15 each and would have had way less food, so it was well worth it. The restaurant is Khonkaen Koon Thai Restaurant in Umina Beach, they only do it Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday nights but check their Facebook for more details. Can highly recommend it if you're nearby.

Aside from that, I agree with everyone that has mentioned a Royal Caribbean buffet. However, you're not doing it right if you're going on a cruise and not treating the main dining room (Sapphire Dining Room on Explorer of the seas) as an all you can eat experience. If there is three entrees, three mains and 3 desserts you want to try, your waiter will be more than happy to bring them all to you if you ask.

    • We found that was an unexpected bonus of choosing the second sitting for dinner (as well as not being over 75) - the waiter could tell us how many courses were leftover so we could try everything. He was well tipped on the last night :D

  • Conrad Maccau!!!!

  • +1

Does anyone have a list of active buffets in Melbourne?

  • +1

Marina Bay Sands for both breakfast and dinner, this place made Melba at Langham look rather poor.

  • Hong Kong Disneyland over the Christmas period, hands down. Delicious food from all corners of the globe, and the selection of desserts, wow! Unforgettable

  • When I was much much younger.. sizzler and pizza hut.

Also the old star city one was pretty great.

But my most memorable one was simple breakfast buffet somewhere in I think Canberra or Queensland.. just some eggs and bacon and sausages and what not.. was simple but a dream.

I always enjoy the buffet at Merrylands RSL, not to be confused with the neighbouring buffet at Merrylands Bowling Club.
On Friday and Saturday night, the buffets sets you back $25, however, they have a variety of seafood: prawns, crab, sashimi, mussels, pippi, and other popular dishes such as: peking duck & san choy bow.
I really enjoy it, because I get my high volume serving size and the quality is great IMO.

  • +1

Bazaar at QT Gold Coast - great food, will cook at your request, can get hotel room deals that include it.

The Burns Club in Canberra - great variety of food, very good value at lunchtime on weekdays (around $16).

  • Auburn RSL buffet was always great value for a wide variety of Chinese food. I loved the unlimited grass jelly. Unfortunately the last time I went, the whole RSL was closed down.

  • +1

Probably hasn't been mentioned but the QT hotel in surfers paradise has the best buffet I have been to by a stretch, it ain't cheap but for what you get it's worth it.

Edit: 2 comments above it was mentioned

    • Upvote for the laugh about it being mentioned just above

  • Hilton hotel Agra has a pretty good buffet breakfast.

Really, though, it’s all about dish rotation if you are staying in a hotel over a week or so… (or, a cruise, I suppose)…..that’s why I’m a big fan of egg stations…. you can kind of rotate your own dishes.

  • The Hilton at San Francisco has one of the best breakfasts I've been to. You can even make to order something if there is something there you wanted but they didn't have. Plus they don't mind if you bring your plates back up to the room -> whole days food supply until drinks + light dinner at 4:30pm :)

  • Best Buffet i been to was the star (The Garden Buffet) its around $70 pp for weekends seafood dinner, steep, but with the magic of an Asian grandmother, (and the help of her black card 50% off) becomes $35 pp, along with all her credits she uses at the casino, so meal usually ends up free, from $840 to $420 to free with the star black tier rewards card :)

    Their seafood are pretty good
*Oysters, i dont eat oysters so no idea on taste, my family eat oysters, and none of them ever get sick, so i guess all their seafood are fresh
*prawns are nice and big, sweet and firm texture,
*their are 3 types of crabs, blue swimmer are plentiful in stock, Alaskan crab i think are replaced every hour, (the ones that are salty and have long legs) but my favourite is the spanner crab, full of meat, issue is that the buffet only stocks them every hour, so they are gone quick,

They also have pizza, pasta, usual Western foods (sliced beef, chicken, pork, lamb), grilled fish, chips, bbq meats, salads, small range of sushi, laksa, chinese bbq meat (charsiu and duck) i dont normally go for these because they have been left out, i normally wait for the fresh ones of the grill, meat is pretty good when its fresh

Everything there is decent, but the nature of a buffet and an asian family of twelve ment that it was only seafood on the table to get our money worth ($0) they also charge for drinks, $5 pp aycd

Also here is a general tip for EVERY buffet, follow the asian, they know whats good there, you always see a large table with seafood, and most of the time they are asian, follow them, and you be set for the buffet :)

Asian family who goes the the star every month to eat at the buffet :)
