  • Dark mode for ozbargain, the white is blinding at night!

  • How about an ability to post positive trader reviews on people's profiles?

That would be awesome so I can trust the other person

    • Classified needs a bit of work this year. Trade reviews / ratings might be coming.

      • Thank you friend, that is mucho fantastic

        For now I use this

      • Hmm rework. Will there be a policy review of referral sharing - that is sharing referrer bonuses with the referee in the classifieds? After all sharing is caring?

        • We already have randomised referral implemented so people should use that.

          After all sharing is caring?

Unmoderated over-sharing is spamming, and it's something most people do not want.

          • @scotty: Cashrewards and Shopback are special exceptions to that rule of no referral sharing because they are businesses? You allow the referral/affiliate commissions they acquire to be shared with the 2nd party. Why not personal only in special sections like the classifieds?

In fact Ozbargain have a special spot for business referral sharers below the main links.

            • @brisdaz: We have had cashback site links below the "Go to Deals" for many years, even before you have registered your account here, as we see cashback a useful money-saving mechanism for our community members. Cashrewards & ShopBack are actually relatively new, as we've had MoneyBackCo, Qwibble, etc in the past.

Likewise we also include randomised referral section on deals. However allowing individuals to post their own referrals in the classified? No.

              • @scotty: .

                Thanks for the quick reply.

I think you said you wanted this site to be free for all members.

Have you ever considered a freemium subscription to ozbargain, one of features which would prioritize members referral links then? I think reddit has gilded posts?

Alternatively have an auction style bidding (or fixed if easier to code) like Adwords whereby referrers could share referral credits with referrees and/or get higher probability of being shown. Perhaps ozbargain could get a cut. It's probably too much hassle for this paragraph but maybe not with subscription?

useful money-saving mechanism for our community members.

Sometimes referrer bonuses are a lot larger then referree bonuses so sharing it would make it also a fairer system for all.

PS Cashrewards is a rebranding of MoneyBackCo?

  • +1

There is a subreddit where you "invest" (comment) in memes that are posted and get more gain if you invest early and the post gets upvoted a lot; memeeconomy

Since positive votes are easier to track, would it be easy to create a points system where you get more points if you vote early on a high vote deal?
Would get more people trawling the new deals and participating more.
You'd have to penalise votes in bad deals so people didn't just vote for everything.

    • You'd have to penalise votes in bad deals so people didn't just vote for everything.

And who determines a bad deal, after 10 people have just quickly voted for a deal?

You'd need to totally re-work the front page voting algorithms, based on the speed at which people voted.

It would also lead people into a false sense of "bargainness", due to the popularity of the deal based on people voted it up.

Plus the money side, you expect scotty and co to just hand out free money because of votes?

I mean, there's no such thing as a bad suggestion, but cmon…

  • Suggestion:

Start a 2019 Suggestions post, now that y'know, we are in 2019?

Oh also, I'm re-submitting my "change the average vote count average rules" thing.

Shitty stores like this shouldn't be allowed to post. A vote average of 5 should be imposed for performance based bans, not 1. 1 is easy.

    • A related comment: for OzBargain store pages such as Myer or David Jones, the productreview.com.au rating is prominently displayed. For this store, this is absent.

Based on Spackbace' comment, I looked at a recent post, and someone highlighted the productreview. Perhaps this is good info to include on the store page.

      • We actually have to manually link the reviews on ProductReview.com.au with the stores here on OzBargain. For EazyRentCars since it does not map to rentalcars.com so we aren't able to link those 2 pages together.

    • Start a 2019 Suggestions post

Damn. Forgot to check the calendar. Done.

change the average vote count average rules

Moderators were actually reviewing this last week. We are coming up with a few models on the optimal average vote count for stores to be banned. We should have an update soon.

    • Sorry for delay.

First the stats. These are the amount of stores who received either a temporary or permanent automated performance bans over the past year.

      Y M Count
      2017 11 38
      2017 12 30
      2018 1 18
      2018 2 19
      2018 3 28
      2018 4 22
      2018 5 31
      2018 6 25
      2018 7 25
      2018 8 24
      2018 9 49
      2018 10 43
      2018 11 67
      2018 12 42

There are various points with this.

Our vote average has increased ~50% from 2014 to 2018 (20.94 to 30.85). If we apply that to our current vote average of 1 then that would increase to 1.47.

In an example of a 30 day rolling basis:

1.47 vote avg. would ban an additional 7 stores, 1.5 would ban 11 additional stores, 2 would ban 26 additional stores.

      So that's the math part.

The other factor is say a deal average of 1.5 over 2 posts might be a bit over the top to ban a store. A 1.5 average over 5-6 deals is probably more acceptable. The system treats these equally though.

Looking at the current amount of bans, the question would be is it enough? 67 in November and 42 in December are pretty significant amounts. We are not sure there is justification to increase the voting average for performance bans but perhaps there is a better way of implementation.

      • 1.47 vote avg. would ban an additional 7 stores, 1.5 would ban 11 additional stores, 2 would ban 26 additional stores.

That's pretty significant, and a telling sign of the number of stores just getting by.

Personally I'd suggest +2 vote average over 30 days, but also over 2-3 months. I have seen a few stores just posting once a month, and just getting by

The tough factor in all of it are the people who blindly upvote, who don't like seeing deals at zero votes. They've been around on here for a few years and it's very annoying when a store is very average. So as I said before, getting +1 or +2 can be a simple process if you don't cop neg votes.
