75% off XS Usenet (€22.50 for a year, ~$34.61 AUD)

510
qVYLPK3I

Used to use the free accounts a few years ago and they were pretty good. Got 3 emails from them to the 'lucky wheel' where you spin for a discount. One of my accounts spun the 75% off which is the max discount and the page says "Congratulations. You won 75% discount! You can use it on any product, as many times as you want until 10-01-2018 and you are allowed to share it!". I think $34.61 for a year of UseNet with unlimited data/speed is pretty damn good. If you already have a provider might be worth getting this as a backup source as in the past they were a bit slow at honoring takedown requests.

You may to refresh/go back a couple of times for the discount to be applied.

  • Good deal! The retention is a bit average though

    • +2

The places that offer higher retention generally will have partially or completely missing articles for anything past 1500 or so anyway.

      • +1

        Not in my experience.

        • +1

In my experience, the ones with 2000+ days have worse retention at <1000 days than the dutch servers which only do 1000 days.

You need a block account as a fill server for those.

        • You can reliably pull down 1800 day articles?

          Which provider?

  • Haven't used that in a decade. What clients are recommended?

    • +7

      Sabnzbd

    • +5

Try both, SABNZBD and NZBGet, they each have their pros and cons.
I suspect if you haven't used anything for ages, SAB will seem better as it's a million times easier to setup fully. Unfortunately Get requires you to add scripts to get many features working.

Get is written in C++ so lighter weight on any system, super helpful for low powered devices. It also can get you much faster results if you're one of the lucky ones to have insanely fast internet.

I found SAB would use about 23-25% of my NAS's CPU, while Get would use about 18-20%. RAM usage was the same. I'm on ADSL2+ so no trouble in getting full speeds on SAB.

I am long time SAB user and used Get for about 2 weeks before I went back to SAB. I got frustrated in the need for scripts to do what is built in SAB already. The lack of a decent iOS app was also a pain. If you're on Android the NZB360 is great, if on iOS and Jailbroken then NZBUnity is great.
I now just use the native SAB interface on my phone as since 2.0 their mobile interface is easy to use.

  • 1100 days though … wasn't it approaching 3000 days at other providers a while ago?

    • AstraWeb have 3000 days and have had this special $96USD/year unlimited plan going for years (added to Internet Archive wayback machine in 2009)

      http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/96-yearly.html

I also use this provider as a backup since they have sales on blocks they can be useful for the occasional missing articles

Here's my stats - https://vgy.me/xuGlWL.png (Internode ISP gives you free astraweb unlimited)

      • +1

Astraweb is currently cheaper if you go for the US$15 for 2 months, saving you $6 per year.

When I had a subscription with them, years ago, it worked out even cheaper to go $20 for 3 months for a bandwidth limited DSL account since I was on ADSL.
Now I just use block accounts, a NGD 1TB has lasted me 5+ years so far. Can't say I've had much of a problem grabbing things over 1800 days old on either Astraweb or NGD.

        • With automated DMCA takedowns Astraweb are the worst I binned them years ago ( but i suppose it is more to do with the content your looking for) … no matter how cheap you make them. With aussie internet the stuff you want is gone before you have to chance to complete it. I did used to use this mob for their free account one connection but every month having to re-register and to unlock was a pain.

        • NGD are based in America, don't they honour more and quickly DMCA takedowns than, say, servers in the Netherlands like extremeusenet DOT nl ?

          I do not condone piracy.

        • @akoli: I used Usenet for all my downloading up until about 5-8 years ago, (used it from way back in the mid-80s), downloading up to about 300GB a month … then I ran out of things to catch up on :D

Since there's no TV shows worth watching these days bittorrent pretty much covers everything I need with the occasional foray into Usenet to find something elusive, (or really old), for that NGD & AW block accounts have sufficed.

Think I gave up on Usenet as my main source not long after this: Anti-Piracy Boss Ran a Usenet Site

      • I've tried setting up Usenet on my Internode account but no luck, is there anything special you need to setup? Upon testing it always times out.

Just using news.internode.on.net and port 119 with connections set to 8 and nothing else.

        • Here's my settings - https://vgy.me/cQPOCf.png

I just pressed "Test Server" and it timed out too. Maybe whatever article it's trying to test with doesn't exist on the internode server? It works fine for downloading though.

  • Just spun the wheel like OP did and got the same code …

  • +1

That's a very good deal. I bought 4 years worth of unlimited speed at 60% off. That was a year ago. Should have just bought one, and then got this deal. I didn't think they would ever beat 60% off though.

  • Can anyone confirm if account sharing is allowed on the plans?

    • I doubt you'll find any unlimited plan that would allow it.

      Block accounts? Probably fine.

      • Usenet.farm allow sharing with another person on unlimited plan and often have discounts.

      • +1

i'm on a newsgroupdirect $65 Yearly Unlimited plan which i share

      • Just got a response from xsusenet

Accountsharing is not allowed, however if you do stay within your connections we will not get notified by this. So basically you can "share both 20 connections and use the other 10 for browsing"

So all good for sharing as long as connections shared are 20 each and 10 left unused.

  • What is usenet? Is it like torrent? But private?

    • +13

nah, it's a place where one can read and exchange text discussions. Although I did once hear that it does have the occasional linux ISO available.

    • To download a torrent it relies on peer networking, which means that other users are downloading from you (you are uploading to them).

NZB or USENET is a client server design, so you are not required to upload or share with other users.

This has positive legal ramifications, as you are never sharing, only consuming.

I do not condone piracy. I condone the EFF though.

  • Just tried to purchase but clicking on the activate now button does nothing. Tried in Chrome and IE. Anyone having the same problem?

    • +1

Update: Created a new account, same issue, couldn't activate. Refreshed a couple of times and it finally worked. Purchased!

My usual NZB indexer isn't very reliable. Anyone got any recommendations?

      • What payment method did you use?

        • Credit card.

      • Who is your usual?

        • I've used Binsearch or NZBIndex since before Newzbin closed, used to run my own personal Newznab server for awhile, (just indexing the groups I was interested in).

If you don't want to run a permanent downloader, (I use SABnzbd on a RasPi 2), there's the free version of alt.binz which has been my quick Usenet downloader of choice, plus it requires no installation.

      • Yeah I had no luck :\

  • Never really used usenet but have heard good things about the ability to exchange text discussions.

Do I just need a subscription and a copy of nbzget? How do I find linux distros to download? :)

  • Good deal for a backup provider

  • After several attempts on 1 old and 2 new accounts, all I could get (on https://my.xsusenet.com/register-from-promo, after clicking signup to ) was "The page has expired due to inactivity. Please refresh and try again."
When I try in internet explorer I get "Sorry buddy, this offer is expired" in place of "But hurry! Only 7 days 21 hours 15 minutes 22 seconds left."

when I try to register a new account at https://my.xsusenet.com/register I get "Whoops, looks like something went wrong."
    I cleared cookies, no different.

Lines up pretty well with my previous experiences with xsnews, pretty uinreliable.

    • it worked for me after I set default payment

  • How does this compare to frugalusenet? Does it max out?

  • Thanks OP. Already used their free service and using your link gave me the 75% off option for 12 months premium. Needed something as Internode seem to have lost their free usenet service and this is a good cheap alternative, even if the Internode service comes back. Would be nice if this was the price it renews at each year.

    • Huh you're right

Failed login for server [502 news.astraweb.com: Access Denied due to non payment by Internode,iiNet,Adam,TPG. If you like our service, please subscribe for an individual account at www.astraweb.com/special]

I used it just yesterday. Maybe because the year rolled over they are due to renew it?

  • I just signed up, had to refresh the page about 10 times before I could select the cheap deal, but worked eventually :)

  • The site seems dead. Refreshing the page over and over keeps then seems to work but then fully loads and displays the ‘sorry buddy’ message. Can’t even try and register for an account as it goes to a ‘whoops, looks like something went wrong’.

Need this now it seems the Internode Usenet service is dead!

    • If you haven't already got a free account with them, try signing up for that first. If that works, then try the OPs link.

      • Actually went to the main page and tried to register and that worked, seems I have an old account with them from way back. Signed in though and keep trying to refresh the link and keeps having the same issue.

Only trying on my iPad though on safari and chrome. Might have to jump on the computer an see if it works.

EDIT - figured it out, had to stop the page from fully loading and then it allowed me the see and click the button. All signed up :)

  • +1

I disabled JavaScript before clicking through and could add the deal to my free account. Enabled JavaScript once on the pay page.

  • Tried twice with my credit card but I get booted back to the main page and no sign of a successful transaction. Watching my bank account now to see if I miraculously get billed twice.

    Have opened a ticket.

    • Finally got it to work after 3rd attempt. Not sure what was wrong but this time I just signed up with my google account.

  • Anyone try to pre-pay for an additional year?

The pay for your next period button, tries to charge 90, I am curious if buying it a second time gives you another year of credit?

    • +2

I bought it a 2nd time and it screwed me. It gave me 2 subscriptions that end in 2019 instead of extending the current one :(

Opened a ticket with their support and they deactivated one of the subscriptions and credited the extra year to the existing subscription (merged them) so now my subscription ends in 2020.

Just provide them with bother order IDs and they will sort it out in less than 24hrs :)

Here's a screenshot of the support ticket: https://vgy.me/icjOtR.png

  • Hard to Say if this Has what everyone Wants …..

    • I don't think everyone wants the same thing. Some want long retention, others want slow takedown. I have had a couple of failures on relatively new stuff on both xs and astra. I will look into a tweaknews block account as I had a good experience with them previously.
On SAB you can reset the counters every now and again, and swap you primary servers to work out who has the most of what you want.

      • On SAB there is a 30 day counter so it resets automatically each month :) I set xsuse as the primary and newsgroupdirect block as backup and seems to be working good. newsgroupdirect often have sales where you can get 1TB blocks for $40USD and 500GB for $20USD so they are a good backup provider.

        • Are you getting many incompletions? I got a few with astra, not so much now adding xs as primary, just wondering whether I drop astra and go for someone else in block.

        • @skyva: Unfortunately compared to astra that I got free from Internode the rate is way lower

  • Bye bye, Internode/Astraweb!

And, hello, XS Usenet (in conjunction with my existing blocks from Newsgroupdirect)!

    • Looking forward to a new ISP in 6 months when I move! Will stick with Node til then.

    • +2

Ended up purchasing two subscriptions in hopes that it will give me 2 yr expiry. Ended up coming through as two separate logins/subscriptions.

So I sent them a support ticket and they responded within 15mins and combined the two into one. Gave it a quick test and very happy so far!!!

  • XS Usenet or Astraweb deal > What is better

    • I did some checking last night and when downloading my more recent linux iso's, XS was doing better than Astra. I was still getting incompletes so signed up for Tweaknews as well. I will conduct a month long test to work out the two survivors. Battle to the death!
I think it really depends on the content you are after but for me, slow dcma is what I want.

  • Whereabouts in the process do you apply the coupon code? Can't see it anywhere

    • +2

      The offer finished yesterday.
