Sony UBP-X800 Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player - Costco (North Lakes QLD) - $279 - Membership Required

140

Was planning on picking this up as Harvey was selling for $349. JB are selling for $498. $279 is a bargain in my opinion and from what I have seen, this will be a decent improvement from my Samsung UHD player.

Plenty of stock at the North Lakes store, not sure if this is nation wide.

Might as well buy an XBOX 1S that were selling round this price range?

    • Thats what i did

Potentially, though, I have one and not overly pleased with the performance for UHD discs- compared to the Samsung player im upgrading from. :)

Bought one 6 months ago at HN for $398.
Wi-fi has pretty piss poor range ,
otherwise good solid 4k HDR player.

Don't let the sales people try to tell you Dolby Vision is coming in an update ,
as the sony reps have been saying.
If it was going to happen.

Price will probably keep dropping though.

"While the XB800 supports HDR10, it's worth noting that Dolby Vision doesn't feature on its list of supported HDR formats and, speaking to Sony, it's unlikely to in the future."

Are regions still an issue for "4K" discs and if so is this Sony region-free capable (or can it be configured so)?

4k discs have always been region free…

      • After checking, apparently so, but the player may/will still not play out of region DVDs.

        • That's normal. Players aren't generally region free out of the box, I believe it's actually a no no in the industry, however there are exceptions, and most can easily be made region free for DVDs. Though Sony has been harder to region free than other brands from my experience.

So what does a dedicated player do that an X1S doesn't? Given the content is all digital anyway?

Better upscaling for 1080p content on 4k TV, better HDR to SDR conversion for non-HDR TV, silent operation, no stutter while playing 4k discs.

It is Xbone X that gives a real challenge, not Xbone S but then Xbone X is way more exxy

      • Stutter? That's a dealbreaker.

I just unpacked an xbox 1s, bought the christopher nolan 4k boxset and I'm picking up the oled 55" tomorrow, now that I hear there's stutter I'm feeling buyers remorse :/

        I figured upscaling would be 1 pixel -> 4

        • It’s fine. I watched interstellar using my Xbox One s no worries.
          Had 2 handshake issues though.

      • Damn I was going to get one for playing uhh discs, some people reporting Xbox x has the shutter problem too…

  • I was about to say why wouldn't you just use the top package on Netflix and save your cash until I realised that no one in Australia will ever get download speeds fast enough to stream 4k. My guess is that Venezuela will be on faster speeds than us.

      And 4k Netflix doesn't compare to a 4k disc…..

4k Netflix streaming isn't that difficult for most either.

      • Is it compressed bitrate? Ie: technically it's 4k, but in terms of quality it's a bit of a laugh to call it 4k?

        • +1

Netflix is around 15, UHD Bluray is between 82 and 128 depending on the disc. Huge difference.

Well by huge difference the average mum and dad probably wouldn't care less anyway, hence why this format will face an uphill battle and probably always remain niche.

    • Yeah 4K Netflix is only like 15Mbps. Not that hard for people to stream.
