Private Internet Access VPN: 1 Year US $29 (~ AU $38.60)

310

My yearly subscription to Private Internet Access (PIA) had finished up, so I searched around for a deal online. The standard price is US $39.95 which works out to about AU $51.30 for one year of access. Based on a quick search on Ozbargain, US $29 seems to be the lowest price for a yearly subscription.

PIA offers monthly, yearly and two-yearly subscriptions. They offer a 7 day money back guarantee. Their Android app and Windows 10 program is simple to set up and use.

Note: this VPN does not circumvent the US Netlix geoblock so may not be suitable for your needs.

You can pay in prepaid Visa cards, Bitcoin or gift cards if you are paranoid.

most coupon sites offer the deal of $58 ish for 2 years, but that's not a deal. gives them $18 USD cash back for each sale. I wonder if we could get an OzBargain or someone set up a PIA "affiliate" account and then pool all that money together as rebates

definitely the one to use, even proved in court to the FBI they really have no logs

    • Just do it yourself … many affiliate programs have no entry barriers. Anyone can join.

Cheers, was just after a deal for this!

Iv'e been using PIA now for nearly 3 years and I'mcontinuing to use it as it's always been good for me.Can be used on multiple devices like computers, phones, tablets etc my whole family uses my account it's absolutely awesome. When my favourite music app Pandora closed down in Australia earlier this year I though oh no but no worries I just used the VPN and changed my server to another country and I was able to stream Pandora again

    • Oh yeah, i can use Pandora on my phone with a VPN …

      • Yep a total life saver for me.I stream Pandora to my Bose and it's all good again

        • Sweet as bro.

  • Yep sweet as bro

  • For some reason when I try and watch something from the UK using the bbc Kodi addon I always get an error saying I am not in the UK even though I set pia to a UK location. Apart from that it seems to work fine on all my devices.

    • PIA on your router or..?

    • There is a problem that anyone using a known VPN can be blocked by certain websites / applications from being used.

  • Sounds good. How's the speed for, um, totally legit Linux distros from somewhere like Uploaded.to or Rapidgator? Would I be able to max out 100/40 fibre?

    • Its not the fastest VPN for sure. But its decent. On Telstra Cable 100mbps it goes down to about 1/3 speeds of um totally legit linus distros. Not sure about those sites though probably faster if centralized. Could just be my setup tho i got it going through the PIA proxy aswell.

I get anywhere from 60-85 on my 100Mbps Telstra fibre connection via PIA in Toronto. I can't complain about that.

        • I'll have to give Toronto a go. I was not talking about speedtests or direct file downloads and the like though, if thats what you're talking about yes they are much faster, but real world speed for uhhh other things can be slower by half or even third at times in my experience. Still perfectly fine though.

Edit: just checked toronto, only getting 20mbps. get better speeds out of asia usually.

I was talking about torrenting, as that's all I use a VPN for. Haha.

@Xizor: Just another thought, do you have port forwarding enabled and enter the port number into your BitTorrent client? Because I do. Can't get fast speeds without doing that.

        • @BradH13: Hi Brad, tried to PM you. No i do not, but i have invested quite a bit of time fiddling with other settings. I get about 2-3meg/s using the vpn + socks5 combination, not sure speed with either disabled been a while since i bothered. With them both off i get double that. Though with everything decentralized it can vary a lot.

@Xizor: So basically, disconnect the PIA Manager, open up its settings, click advanced, tick request port forwarding, save, and reconnect using a port forwarding server (Toronto and Montreal are two that support it, but there are others, just can't tell you which ones). Now when you hover your mouse over the PIA Manager in the taskbar, after the IP address will be a port number. Open up your torrent client and head to the connection settings page, untick use UPnP, and enter the port number from the PIA Manager into the box, apply, and you should see better speeds. You will need to change/check the port number in the torrent client to match the PIA Manager every now and then, as its random and doesn't always stay the same.

          Hope this helps.

        • @BradH13: Thanks for that Brad. You prodded me into a bit more testing and, whilst i havent done as you suggest yet (not a fan of the speed and ping results from CA im getting atm), using an oz or singapore pia server BUT removing the socks5 proxy in my client sent the speeds from 2-3meg/s to up to between 5-8meg/s… yikes!

@Xizor: Getting 10.1MB/s torrent download from Montreal server today (Telstra unprotected max speed is 11.9MB/s). Highest I've ever had on VPN.

        • @BradH13: Just noticed mine are back around 2-3mb/s so tried settings you suggested but it made no difference, tried a few servers. Which client & version are you using? Thx

        • @Xizor: qBittorrent 4.0.3 (latest). Montreal server just today was downloading for me at 8.9MB/s on a well seeded torrent.

1200 global max connections, 206 max connections per torrent, upload capped at 2MB/s applied to uTP protocol (but this will be smaller for you on cable). No other settings changed bar the port ones as mentioned previously.

    • I can get 60 down out of my 100 HFC

PIA is a good VPN. This is not really a bargain, though, as they never sell it for the regular price, it is always discounted.

You can watch VPN deals on Reddit:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/vpncoupons/

  • I have a feeling this is stackable but not sure. Think I may have stacked one time before.

Current subscription runs to May but I'd be keen to add this on to end of that.

    Does anyone know for sure?

    • If you have current subscription at a better price then they will charge you the same price again for the following year as well.. I have been using it for around 3 years now and they charged me the same deal price for 2nd,3rd year.

  • Is this worth the money over something like Windscribe? Seems PIA is the most expensive by far and not sure what i'm getting over lifetime for the same price from this deal.

    • I have bought this 3 year plan as well and the speed isn't that great as compared to PIA , been using PIA for around 3 years and never had any issue with the speed but you can't access geo restricted sites as they stopped supporting it.
I tried to setup windscribe on my asus router but with some of the servers , the speed is around 2-4mbps(Wifi speed on 2.4ghz) , haven't tested 5ghz or ethernet cable speed yet. Some servers such as canada, usa are better. Overall not bad but keep in mind they are not superfast if thats ur thing.

  • Just out of curiosity, are there any free VPN out there? Can someone recommend a good one?
Sorry for the dumb question (as totally new to this area), but is it really necessary to have a VPN if one is using the internet at home and mobile data?

I think you get what you pay for. You might find a VPN that has a 1 year free trial somewhere. Make sure to research their privacy policies and how they treat your data. Case in point: Hola VPN, which is free. A couple of years ago they were selling their user's bandwidth for a botnet attack. You need to be able to trust your VPN provider.

    • +2

A free VPN doesn't make any sense. You use a VPN to guarantee your anonymity. I wouldn't trust anyone with my data if I'm not paying them a decent sum of money.

  • my PIA ran out and they gave me a 20% discount to resign with them - 59 USD for two years. Been with them two years and never had issues.

  • Thanks. My PIA ran out :D
