I hope they're better quality than the rubbish ones I saw there a few days ago…

My wife got some good ones when they were $4 for 4. The ones we got this morning are juicy and sweet.

We tried $4 for 4 and they were good

The ones at my store are small and crap.

  • Used to grow Kensington Pride mangoes - what I saw in local Aldi (4 for $4) last week I couldn't have sold - they would have been rejects.

Haven't had or seen decent mangoes in supermarkets for years.

The worst are those R2E2, taste like crap.

      Don't like Calypso ones either.

      • +1

R2E2s are simply papayas in disguise :)

        • +1

Yeah, they have that weird paw paw taste.

Some of the Calypso ones do as well.

Much prefer Kensington Pride and second best are Honey Gold.

If you ever get a chance while traveling, try Alphonso or even Kesar variety of mangoes. They are some of the best I have ever tasted. Both grow in India and widely exported across the globe but I haven't seen them here yet. They both have a great combination of slightly sour and more sweet taste along with a strong aroma.

Most of the mangoes here (probably except top quality Kensington Pride) are more Papaya'ish as a fruit. Very mild in taste and aroma. R2E2 is worse than some sweet Papayas and actually like a tasteless, coloured cucumber. Sad story. I wonder how it even sells in the market and continues to be grown every year.

I think because they are large and look nice with the red blush.

Mangoes used to be so nice years ago, huge KP with heaps of flavour and the pungent aroma as they're ripening would fill the entire house.

Fruit in this country is generally bland and tasteless, especially tomatoes and strawberries.

        • @Scab:
          Yes, sad😢

Many other countries have tastier fruit. I remember buying strawberries at the Borough Market in London one trip. Price was only slightly less for 1 than for 2 punnets. As I was so used to almost tasteless ones here, I bought 1 but negotiated to upgrade to 2 if they were good. "Typical Aussie" was the response. They were amazing! Bought so many as was staying across the road. Not what I expected from a land that likes it's food generally bland.

Unfortunately Australia is a harsh country for fruit. With the public buying on price & appearance rather than taste, lack of trust in the market of public acceptance of different tastes (some mangoes have much stronger flavour), import restrictions, large monocultural farm practices, long distances to transport produce requiring early picking, a generally dry country with poor soils, etc lead to mainly disappointing fruit.

In my old fruit business, I scored 450kg of the sweetest, most delicious organic apricots I had ever tasted. But, customers were only interested in the price & I had to sell them fast as they were so ripe😞

  • I bet these are the size of a peach.

Bought the camping fan today.. It puts out next to zero air flow even on max

That's because it was a mango.

Aldi mangoes are really tiny compared to the ones I can buy at most decent vege stores, and even smaller than the coles and woolies ones.
