Pliers, what brands

Looking for a set of pliers for automotive purposes. They are for a young adult and would hope last a lifetime.

Came across a brand called NWS, made in Germany. Any others people would recommend? Looking for a 3+ piece set, general purpose, long nose etc

Not looking for made in China etc ie: Irwin, Stanley.

Thanks.

Knipex are supposed to be good.

I like the look of the Wiha pliers at Bunnings, but it appears that they're forged in Vietnam, which you probably won't like.

    • Damn, beat me too it… +1 for Knipex…

I will also add that Irwin/Vise-Grip brand pliers, I have a few of theirs now, are very good. Nice handles and great quality. Not sure where they are made, but they certainly aren’t crap tier.

If you want good quality with a life time of use, you could also look at Blue Point/Snap On range of tools.

I have been in the automotive trade for over 20 years, I would recommend normal pliers, pointy nose, multi grips and vice grips as a great starter kit. If you wanted to expand on that, add something like external and internal circlip pliers. This will get a young guy out of trouble for 90% of the work he will be doing. Then next year you can look at long nose and right angle pointy nose.

Electrician here. NWS make good quality pliers, sides and long nose, as do most German made brands. Yet to see any major faults in them. You can't go wrong with Knipex, especially with a lifetime warranty (afaik on all products). Marvel MA-880's from Japan, or Crescent 3800CTVN's from the US have solid steel. All suggested include crimpers in their pliers, which may be useful in automotive.

Crescent! Omg! Thank you. I have these as well and do you think I could think of the name. Been bugging me to the point where I was going to drive to work and unlock just to see what brand they are… lol.

      Also a big +1 for anything Cresent…

Edit: and that reminded me of my multi-grips. Channel-Lock, that was the other name I was trying to think of… :D

  • Knipex for large pliers, Lindstrom for small ones. Still got a set of Lindstrom box-joint electronics pliers and cutters from 30 years ago. They'll outlast me.

    • The small 125mm Knipex cutters are also awesome, got them from element14 recently 50% off.

  • +1 for Knipex, use these exclusively and have always been high quality. There is a good eBay store to purchase Knipex from (called Olsenstore). Shipping took ages but they are well priced and genuine.
