Buying Pet Medication Online

Hi,

I'm planning to get some medication from this site called Petceutics for my dog's arthritis, but I'm worried if the medication would be off by the time it arrives at my front door given the summer heat. Is medication typically cooled during shipping? A lot of medication cannot sustain heat.

Thanks

  • Looks like it costs +$10 for refrigeration. But then, are pharmaceutical retailers required to keep medication refrigerated in storage?

Have you reached out to this company and asked these questions?

  • The Animal Pharmacy had saved me sooooo much.

    • Do you know if they keep their stock refrigerated?

      • Believe there's an option to pay a touch more for refrigerated delivery.

  • I would check to see if there is a people equivalent, as your vet can write scripts for that. My cat got people mess for hyperthyroidism and it was so much cheaper.

What's the name of the drug? Dosage and weight of the dog?

  • Loxicom looks like Meloxicam suspension and there is a human equivalent

it will depend on the dosage as to whether that will suit

Have a good chat to a pharmacist …..

You link is to meloxicam tablets and this makes it almost impossible to to give a pet a correct dose, unless it is for the full tablet dose of 7.5mg or 15mg, which to my untrained eye seems a very large dose for a pet (unless your pet weighs 60 plus kilos).

A suspension allows you draw up the correct dose (based on your pet's weight) in a syringe - you cannot do this with a tablet, due to all the fillers used to bind tablets.

  • You need to figure out how much active ingredient your dog needs, and if there is a comparable human dose you can use.

    • Sorry I missed your comment here, but yes, you are absolutely correct.

  • Yes, it depends on the pet.. If it's a big breed and the tablet can be segmented you might find something comparable.

It also depends on the safe dosage range… Bottom line .. It's worth checking :)

    • tablet segmentation does not work as your assuming an even distribution of the active ingredient. This is not the case due to fillers etc used to bind tablets. This is also the reason why some tablets can not and should not be split for smaller doses.

  • I think we agree, although you seem to assume we don't. I am well aware some tablets can't be split, while others can.

Anyway OP have a chat to a pharmacist :)

    • Sorry for the confusion, I guess my point is that meloxicam tablets cannot be segmented.

      • No it's my bad, I was commenting about medications in general, and you were being specific about Meloxicam.

So being specific, it looks like the dosage is .1mg/kg dog
        http://files.boehringer.com.au/files/CMI/Metacam%20Oral%20Su…

So you would need a 75 kilo dog for the lowest human dose of 7.5mg

resubaehtgnolhcs looks spot on, that this pill isn't segmented and tests on dosage when it was split gave significant variances.

So OP unless you have a massive dog then it's pet version…

unless you have a dog like this :)

  • Interested to see how you go because I need some Bulgarian horse steroids for my errrr daughter's pony because it has pleurisy and alopecia.

    • You sure that is for your daughter's pony?

  • oh and OP, hope your dog responds well and feels better. Our doggo had bad arthritis and it was tough on her.

  • For dogs with arthritis, if you haven't already, talk to your vet about a course of Cartrophen/Pentosan shots, it's a godsend.

    • Sadly it doesn't always work - so it isn't a universal godsend. We've done this with our Greyhound and the shots didn't do much for her at all. She's responding a lot better to the Metacam with her food though.
