AmEx Channel Exclusive Offer: 100k Bonus Points with American Express Velocity Platinum Card ($375 Annual Fee)

850

The Champagne Mile and Flight Hacks have partnered to bring you an AMEX channel exclusive offer for the American Express Velocity Platinum Card.

Receive 100,000 bonus Velocity Points when you apply online between 9am 21st December and 29th January 2018, are approved and spend $1,500 on your new card within the first 3 months.

As this is an AMEX Channel Exclusive, you can't access this promotion on the main AMEX website (currently offering 50k bonus) or via the AMEX Refer a Friend Program (currently offering a 60k bonus) – you must apply through an exclusive AMEX Affiliate Partner link

100,000 points is the largest sign on bonus currently available for a Velocity-branded credit card, and enough to get you one way from Australian cities to the USA in business (or return in economy) flying Virgin Australia, or flying first class from SYD / MEL to Singapore or Hong Kong one way on Singapore Airlines.

You’ll access the best earn rate on a Velocity card in Australia, with 1.5 Velocity points earned per $1 for everyday spending categories (and no points cap).

In line with OzBargain affiliate guidelines, we are unable to link directly to the card application form. By clicking through to the deal, you’ll be taken directly to a landing page at either The Champagne Mile or Flight Hacks with more information about the card (we’ve applied randomisation in order to distribute traffic equitably across both sites – you’ll have a 50/50 chance of hitting either site. It's kind of like our own version of the AMEX referral wiki!). You can then directly access the exclusive application link from the landing page.

Key Card benefits:
*100,000 bonus Velocity points when you apply online by January 29 2018, are approved and spend $1,500 on your new Card within the first 3 months
*A complimentary Virgin Australia domestic economy return flight between selected Australian capital cities each year after your first Card spend. (Using this perk can partially or fully offset the annual card fee of $375)
*100 Velocity Frequent Flyer Status Credits when you spend a minimum of $50,000 within your card membership year
*A suite of comprehensive insurances
*A total of four lounge passes each year - two annual invites to the exclusive American Express Lounge at Sydney International Airport (with a new AMEX Melbourne Airport lounge opening early 2018), and two complimentary visits to Virgin Australia's domestic lounges when flying with Virgin Australia
*Obtain free Supplementary cards for family members – handy for maximising benefits from promotions like AMEX Connect Offers and ‘Shop Small’

Card fee and eligibility
The card comes with an annual fee of $375 each year, which can easily be offset by the card benefits above. You’ll need to report a minimum income of $65,000 (this includes household income – so you may be eligible to apply even if you don’t personally meet this income threshold). To be eligible for the bonus, you must not have held a credit card issued directly by American Express Australia in the last 18 months. Previous and existing bank-issued AMEX card holders (cards issued by: Australia New Zealand Banking Group Limited, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank, Westpac Banking Corporation) and those holding a supplementary or corporate card are eligible.

A reminder- the 100,000 bonus point offer is not available via the main AMEX website or via the Refer a Friend program – you must apply through an exclusive AMEX Affiliate Partner link

Disclaimer: The Champagne Mile and Flight Hacks receive a commission when you apply for the card using one of our links.

        • Yes, so long as there are tickets available in the same fare buckets which qualify for the complimentary flights, you could certainly get them to book you both on the same flight.

  • "You’ll need to report a minimum income of $65,000 (this is listed as combined household income – so even if you don’t meet the threshold with your individual income, you may be eligible to apply)."
If my wife's income is less than 65K. Can she get a card on my income( I already have a AMex card).

    • +1

Yes, so long as your 'pooled' household income is 65k or above, you'll meet the income criteria for this card :)

  • What are the selected cities? Is it just the east coast or will Perth be included?

    • The route map is extensive, which cities are you looking at? From Perth, you can travel return to Adelaide, Broome, Karratha, Newman, Port Hedland and Sydney. However, unfortunately you can't travel the opposite direction.

      • Adelaide to Gold Coast or Brisbane?

How can we check the route map?

        • +1

Hi, Adelaide routes are: Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney. I'll have a route map up on the site shortly :)

        • +1

@The Champagne Mile: Cool! Hmmm this is really tempting.

    • Perth is the biggest winner here, I keep my card just for the free flight. A trip to Sydney can easily cost more than $375 return. Also you don't need to take the flight in your name so it's easy to give to friends and family instead.

  • When is the annual fee charged? On first statement?

    • +1

Hi, yes, in my experience, it is usually levied at the end of the first month (so first statement).

  • Looks ok, but I would rather get a credit card for FREE, especially the first year.

Surely you could give back part of your commission to offset Amex's exorbitant fees?

  • Should you get an email from them once you have applied?

    • Hi, depending on the approval status, you may receive an email or SMS after the application. If you're concerned, they should be able to advise the status of your application if you give them a call.

      • They told me it was approved, I expected an email to that affect

What's the best Amex card to apply for if i want to get cash back on purchases from Harvay Norman and the likes? Seen so many Amex cashback offers, just curious. Thanks.

  • +1

Hi, all AMEX cards offer the ability to register for cashback offers through AMEX Connect. While the Velocity Platinum deal represents great value, If cashback deals is your main rationale for holding the card, you might want to consider one of the fee free options like the Essential, Velocity Escape or Qantas Discovery.

    • If I currently have an Essential and apply for Express Velocity Platinum, can I be considered for points?
I know it says I must not have held any AMEX issued card for 18 months, but I did not get any free bonus points when applying for Essential so I am not cheating the system :)
Have you heard of anyone getting the 18 month waiting period waived?
      Thanks

      • Hi there. Unfortunately the Essential card is a direct-issued AMEX, and therefore you'd not be eligible for the bonus points. My understanding is that the 18 month rule is now strictly enforced. The only way around this would be to perhaps get someone else in your family to sign up for the card, and pool the points to your account.

  • How many points do you need to fly first class one way to Singapore ?

    • 95,000 points - so easily achievable with the sign on bonus.

    • +1

Hi @Jayjay, its not just the points. You MAY also need to pay for taxes on top of the points. Double/Triple check the details. Its an easily overlooked point.

      • Taxes on that route are around $80 from memory, in general taxes on Virgin and Singapore Airlines are very low.

  • Does having had the CPA AMEX negate the bonus?

  • My partner has supplementary Bank issued as well as AMEX direct cards as I am the primary holder. Is she still eligble for the bonus 100k pts?

    • +1

Hi, absolutely. Supplementary card holders (of both direct and bank-issued AMEX products) are eligible for the bonus points.

  • Are the domestic flight options (for the complimentary return flights) between all capital cities?
You listed some destinations from Perth earlier but not BNE, MEL. Was the route map that lists the eligible cities per departure city?

    • Most, but not all routes are eligible for the free flight.

From BNE: Adelaide, Cairns, Canberra, Hamilton Island, Hobart, Mackay, Melbourne, Newcastle, Proserpine, Rockhampton, Sydney, Townsville

From MEL: Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Coffs Harbour, Gold Coast, Hobart, Launceston, Mildura, Newcastle, Sunshine Coast, Sydney

The routes are not published on the AMEX website, but AMEX has provided the above info to us and we're working to get it updated on site.

  • Can you provide the routes from Sydney please?

  • I have the Amex explorer card. It has a different loyalty program from this card. Am I eligible for the bonus points? How hard do Amex enforce the rules?

    • +1

No. Unfortunately you won't be eligible for the bonus points, as the Explorer card is a direct-issued AMEX product.

  • ?How does this compare to the explorer deal a few months ago?

    • Both are great cards and have generous member benefits - it probabky depends on how you'll be planning to use the bonus points ;)

      • If there wasn't the 100,000 bonus on the Velocity card, you'd say the Explorer is better value with the better insurance upgrades, 2 points per $1 and the $400 credit rather than the free flights yeah?

    • Incredibly late response, but which deal are you referring to?

  • Hello All,

A quick question. Am i able to sign up for the card, get the points, cancel after 1 year (before the next annual fee) and move to a AMEX card with my bank, which is offering it with no fees as part of a package I have with them?

Also, please let me know if this is not allowed etc… thank you.

    • Hi, yes you can cancel your card at any time. However, bear in mind that a number of banks are phasing out AMEX, so you may want to check if that includes the products on offer with your package.

  • I currently have American Express platinum Edge . Can i still apply for this card ?

    • No

    • Yes you can apply, that's no problem. However you won't get the bonus points (which is how you should've phrased your question).

  • So I applied on Friday and the response I got was it was in processing and i’ll have an outcome 5-10 business days (it did state i can call mon-fri to find our progress). I thought it would automatically give me a response? I don’t hold out much hope :(

    • Did it say anything about being provisionally accepted? You should have seen something like that on the screen when you were applying.

I got this in the mail straight after clicking submit:

Thank you for applying for the American Express Velocity Platinum Card. We're currently reviewing your application and will let you know the outcome within 5 to 10 working days.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please call us on 1300 557 743, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm AEST (quoting reference number 2018000000000AUD), and we will be happy to assist you.

I assume you are referring to that?

I would not worry but make sure that you also provide any additional documentation by clicking on the link after you apply. The annoying thing is that this link is NOT on the email and so if you are in a hurry and didn't notice it (or thought you could get to it later on), you may need to do some online hunting to find the link.

Funnily enough, when I entered in my reference number, post code and DOB to enter in additional documentation, the system said it didn't need any. Weird. Maybe because I declined the $40,000 credit and dropped it down to $8,000? Don't know.

  • I have the Westpac Black AMEX, would I still be eligible for the 100k velocity points?

    • Hi, yes, if you hold a bank-issued AMEX you are certainly eligible for the bonus points.

      • +1

Thanks! Applied earlier. Only took 5-10 minutes to complete the application and received instant approval. Also took up the 12 months 0% balance transfer offer (1% fee applies). Love taking up the 0% balance transfer offers as I can keep more funds sitting in my offset for longer to save interest on the mortgage.

  • Is anyone having difficulty getting onto the link provided to sign up? Because I'm currently stuck on the loading screen.

    • Hi there, hopefully this was resolved, but do let us know if you require any assistance navigating the application page. Cheers, Adele

  • Any possibility to sell the Virgin lounge passes or are they just straight out linked to your card?

And will AMEX Explorer w/ 100k offer come back?

    Thanks

    • Hi there, the Velocity passes come pre-loaded to your card, so must be used by you personally. I'm not able to offer any advice about upcoming promotions for other cards - but we'll certainly let you know if / when an increased bonus offer comes up for the Explorer card in 2018 :)

  • hmm curious, for Amex Lounge passes, can your supplementary user use the lounge pass if you're not around

    • Hi there, good question. I'm following this up with AMEX and will advise asap. Cheers, Adele

    • +1

No @Baghern i just tried this yesterday.

      • That is unfortunate. I have two passes for hitting Silver and was planning to use that for me and the wife. I'm assuming these 'hitting Silver' passes are the same as the AmEx and if so then I'm not impressed.

  • Looks like this offer is not exclusive to champagne mile club, I entered Amex site manually and can see the 100,000 point offer available to velocity platinum as long as applied and approved before 29 Jan 2018

    • +1

Hi, this offer is an AMEX partner exclusive until 29 January - this means that you can only access it via the affiliate links of AMEX partners (including The Champagne Mile and Flight Hacks). I've just checked the main AMEX website and can confirm that only the reduced 50k offer is available. In line with OzBargain affiliate link t & cs, we'll be sure to advise the mods / update the post link if the offer is expanded to the main AMEX site.

      • yeah, probably the link got cached in cookies, I tried a different browser and only see 50,000 point offer

  • Any chance of getting a Qantas offer soon?

  • With the free annual flight, does anyone know the fare type Amex would book you on? (e.g. flexi or saver). I would want to use my Velocity complementary upgrades on for the free flight but the fare needs to be the more expensive flexi fare. Thanks.

    • Hi, unfortunately only the less expensive saver bucket qualifies for the free flight.

  • +1

I think that I'm going to hold out for the Explorer bonus points. Fingers crossed that it's not too long.

Thanks for these deals The Champagne Mile!

    • +1

I'll be sure to let you know as soon as a new one is released :)

      • After saying that, I now understand that AMEX miles can't be transferred to the QFF program. I was looking at one of the round the world Business Class trips described on Point Hacker. Back to the drawing board for me! Luckily this offer is still valid until the end of the month haha.

  • What is the minimum credit limit on this?

    • 3k

      • I was approved last night - tried to call to check my allocated limit (its not given during the application process) but they didn't have the information yet.

  • +1

I have a question — I have this card and have my wife on a supplementary card under my account. Is my wife still eligible to obtain the point if she signs up for her own card?

Nevermind : the answer is yes.

  • Very interested in the card, how can I check whether it's been 18 months since I last joined up with AMEX? Is this something AMEX customer service can advise? Thanks.

    • +1

Hi, yes, just give AMEX a call. They will be able to advise you of the date you cancelled your previous AMEX card.

  • Do you have to spend min &50,000 a year to keep as platinum ? Will your level drop to gold if not spend enough on the card ?

    • Hi, please note that there is no airline status included with this card, However, you can get 100 Velocity Frequent Flyer Status Credits applied to your Velocity Frequent Flyer account when you spend a minimum of $50,000 within your card membership year (and these status credits can help you to obtain an elite tier of membership within Velocity Frequent Flyer). If you don't make the $50,000 spend, you'll not receive the status credits.

      • ah, ok. Got confused thought I will only be able to keep all these benefits if I spend $50,000 a year. LOL

    • NVM - misunderstood the question I think.

Platinum Card does not equate to Velocity Platinum status!

      • Haha yes, I got so confused with all these terminologies.

  • Should I receive an email notification after apply ? I applied yesterday but did not receive anything. Wondering ifit actually went through.

    • Not an email but it should have said you were approved (or not) at the time of application as well as giving you a reference number.

You can call and check - they can look you up from your name, DOB and postcode. You want the new applications department.

      • ok. I dont recall if it said approved or not. I did see the ref no. but thought they are going to email me anyway. So just closed the page. :( Anyway to retrieve my results ?

ok just saw rest of your reply and will give then a call now.

        • +1

Not that I know - if you call they can give you it I'm sure.

I applied on Monday and was approved . I called on Tuesday and they had no account data yet, Called again Wednesday and they could see my account and give me a credit limit. Today I got an email telling me how to set up my online account and activate my new card (which hasn't arrived yet).

        • +1

@gadgetguy: Thanks. Just called them and the lady did the check over the phone and approved it . Said the card should arrive around 3 days.

  • It feels like i've been waiting forever now for a no annual fee American Express card (Amex OR bank issued) with a decent points bonus. Please jeebus.

    • +1

Amex has already gotten rid of all bonus points for no-fee Amex cards, by end last year, for the applicant. In any case, even when they gave it, it was not huge, like say, this offer.

  • Just applied. Let's see how this pans out :) first time AMEX'r

I had a bit of a chat with mates that have other cards, and read up a bit about the amex surcharges…. how have people here fared with these charges? are they really that bad/annoying?

    • +1

Hi, I manage to put around 70% of all my spend on AMEX, and very rarely get hit with surcharges. None of the major retailers (Coles, Woolies, Myer, DJs, BP) levy a surcharge. And a good tip is to link your AMEX to your PayPal account so that you can use it wherever PayPal is accepted. I pay off most of my utilities and rate bills with no surcharge in this way.

      • +1

Brilliant! Started spending on it already and i'm pretty happy so far. I'll take the Paypal advice up and link the two. Thanks!

  • How soon after receiving the card and spending the required $1,500 will I receive the 100k velocity points?

    • AMEX advise that the points will post in your Velocity account 8-10 weeks after you meet the minimum spend.

  • How do you go about booking your complimentary flight?

    • Hi. You're eligible to book the flight after your first spend on the card. Just give AMEX a call via the phone number on the back of the card, and they will be able to assist you. It will save you time if you search for and identify the flights you'd like to book, and provide this to the operator.

      • Thanks!

  • Is this offer valid until midnight 29/1?

    • Hi there, yes it is :)

  • Hi Champagne Mile.
I spoke to AmEx team, they advised me that bonus points after I reach the requirement, will come from "the Champagne mile". Can you clarify that for us

    • Hi there, the bonus points awarded for the channel exclusive offer are credited by AMEX to your Velocity account, provided you meet the terms and conditions for the offer and have met the eligible spend criteria. We don't administer the product, we simply have a relationship with AMEX to help promote it. Cheers, Adele

      • Are you able to clarify that with AMEX team, as various Amex personnel advised me that I need to contact you guys for the Bonus point. Has anyone got same problem, or any problem with receiving the 100k points bonus?

        • Hi there,

There was no mention of The Champagne Mile or any other AMEX partner on the application form or within the terms and conditions for the duration of the Partner exclusive offer.

The online application form clearly states that the bonus points will be awarded if you meet the terms and conditions for the offer and have met the eligible spend criteria. Please also bear in mind that the bonus points can take 8 to 10 weeks to be credited to your account after you have met the minimum spend.

If you can message me privately with as much information about the call as possible (i.e. when you called, who you spoke to (i.e. Australian call centre) and exactly what they said), I am happy to follow this up with AMEX for clarification and coaching purposes.

          Cheers
          Adele

        • @The Champagne Mile:

          Hi Adele
I will chase that up, please provide me with the private message address, and I will message you.

        • @n6uy3n: Hi, you can message me via OzBargain, but you may need to turn on messaging in your preferences. Otherwise, feel free to email [email protected] Cheers, Adele

  • I Only received 50k points…? 100% followed instructions
