Hot deal +1 from this Sydney Sider

Is this any good? I really need a portable air conditioner as mine is old and extremely loud

    • +2

I have this unit, it's loud but the cooling is great.

  • 4.1kw. Can you just plug this into the wall or do you need a special power point?

    • +6

4.1KW is its 'Cooling Power'. Its electrical consumption is 1800W so will be fine in a standard 10A (2400W) GPO.

  • I am wondering if this is always using 4.7kw or if it uses less when not being cranked to the max? Because i could probably get away with the 4.1kw model but it is more expensive. However I don't want to pay heaps more for my electricity bill.

It does say this under specifications, but I am not sure how to interpret it:

    Power
    BTU 16,000BTU/hr
    Kilowatt Range 4.0 - 4.9kW
    Kilowatts 4.7kW

    • +1

4.7KW refers to the amount of thermal energy it removes not the amount of electricity.

      • right right… so 1800 watts as posted above. Whereas the smaller model consumes about 1400w.

Now I am trying to convince myself to buy the bigger one.

I am thinking that if i buy the bigger one, it will cool the room down quicker and shut off sooner, hence wouldn't the overall power consumption be similar within the 2 units?

        • +1

Always strive for the larger, more capable unit (within reason) as it wont have to work as hard therefore consuming less energy but also extending the overall life expectancy.

        • It's very hard to say. There's a sweet spot range and if you're not in it you either underpowered and running all the time or over powered and using a lot of power.

A rough rule of thumb is they're half as efficient as a wall unit so you can use online calculators for those and double it - but every situation is different.

        • +1

With the way portable aircons work… You'd want the most powerful unit. That 4.7kw of cooling doesn't take into consideration the constant hot air the room sucks in when the compressor fan is exhausting.

  • https://auspost.com.au/shipster#favouriteRetailers hipster has 2 months free at the moment and looks like kogan is apart of it. i have never used it. but this might help with the shipping cost.

    • I just had a look at it and shipping is only free from Shipster if the shipping is less than $20. Shipping for this portable air con is $44 for me, so Shipster doesn't do anything to the total. Would have been a great deal if I had got free shipping!

    • I didn't get an option to deliver with shipster at checkout.

  • Isn't it risky to plug a 4.7kW device to a regular socket? I think I'm missing something.

The installation manual doesn't mention voltage, so it's 230V, I guess. The manual has "sociable remarks" however. https://assets.kogan.com/files/usermanuals/KAPORAIR16MA-A.pd…

Again, as above… 4.7kW is its 'Cooling Power'. It's Electric Power Consumption is 1800W. Either way, it isn't exactly 'risky' to connect something that draws more than the typical circuit can supply because that's what Circuit Breakers are for. Fair enough if you're talking about old-skool fuses as their ratings could vary plus they could sometimes take a while to blow but these days with super-sensitive Circuit Breakers you'd know pretty quickly if you were overloading your circuit as it would just trip quicker than a heartbeat. There IS always a chance a Circuit Breaker could be faulty though…

  • My one from the last deal still hasn't shipped. Maybe I should cancel and buy this one!

    $379+$35shipping=$414
    Why not use 4x$100(giftcards)x0.85+$14=$354?

    • I thought about this but Can you pay for shipping with gift cards ?

Also this shipster website that gives free shipping from Kogan would be the best combo.

      • Yes, confirmed. Just applied 4x$100 vouchers

        • Cool - can’t really change the title because some places shipping can be much more.
