The Breville is better. I owned the Breville and when someone broke it we got the sunbeam, wish I'd just got the Breville.
The Breville is better.
I think so to…
I got one of these when the Good Guys were giving away
moneyvouchers about a year or so ago…I had a Breville. Got it when it was on special for $20. It eventually broke. I've never seen it at that price again.
I used to love these. But cleaning them was a problem. You can't immerse in water. Recommended to use a wet cloth. But that's never going to be as clean as a plate. Eventually, cheese will stick to it, or some part of it, and then removing it will peel off some of the non-stick coating.
I've had about 4 and they've never lasted more than a few months. Still useable, but they become difficult to use. Cheese getting stuck and hard to remove. Sandwich getting stuck due to the cheese being stuck.
thanks….you just reminded me why I never use the one I already have.

I just use a very damp viva paper towel about 5 minutes after turning it off… Cleans easily…
I think that's what I did too. Paper is rough though. You'll eventually scratch the teflon, and it will come off gradually. The moment cheese no longer comes off without resistance, it's irreversible. Also, you're not using soap. Water alone doesn't keep it clean. But then if you use soap, you can't rinse it off, and some of it will get into your next sandwich.
It's best to use hard cheese that doesn't go creamy when melted, although it won't taste as good. Cheese that goes creamy can spill off the edge of the non-stick pads and onto the outside which isn't coated in teflon, and then it gets messy.
Now I remember why it's been 10 years since I've played with sandwich makers. I'm ready to give them another go, but… at this price I'm tempted. But it will probably end up in landfill again.
Awesome but impractical.

I've had my Breville for over a year now and it's as good as new.
Get 'the Big One' Breville been using it regularly for over a year and the non-stick coating has held up well. I do the same as jv and clean it using a wet Viva paper towel while the sandwich maker is still hot. I have spare one that I got with The Good Guys vouchers which is still in its box as I was expecting the first one not to last long.
I have had a lot of these sandwich makers over the years and like you said the non-stick coating wears off quickly but not this one, Breville must have improved the non-stick coating they use now.
@adr8: I used to have that but someone dropped it and broke it. I got it for $20 but haven't seen it at that price since. It just feels wrong to buy a second one at a more expensive price than the first.
I don't remember if the teflon held up. It might have.
Keep in mind when you wipe this thing, bread crumbs (there will be some) being smeared against the coating can scratch it, just like smearing sand or dirt while wiping your phone or windscreen wipers can also scratch the glass.
This is why you use baking paper…
You use baking paper each time you make a toastie?
Being clean freaks too, we just burn the kitchen after each use.
I bought one of these a couple of months ago from The Good Guys and after it shorted on the 3rd use I got to find out how ABSOLUTELY USELESS The Good Guys are. Absolute clowns.
You end up paying more in Camembert though…
