  • Seems Cheap!

I have an Actifry which stirs the food. Is this a non stirring one?

    • +1

Yes I believe so… DYOR all.

      • What search engine would you recommend?

        • +3

          Bing is the best!

  • +1

Does anybody here have one and can comment on its performance?

    • +3

Yes. My husband was keen on it and I thought it would never get used. However we use it a lot! Chips are crispy, but not as crispy as deep fried. We use it mainly for frozen foods that we would normally cook in the oven, but find this a lot faster (our oven takes a long time to preheat). Examples: crumbed fish, hash browns, spring rolls, calamari. It's quite a small unit, so it suits us (just two people). It would probably give you two small serves of chips (the fuller the basket, the less crispy). I find that quite a bit of fat drips out of the food in into the tray, so I guess that's a good thing.

      • Thanks, is it easy to clean?

        • +1

Yes, it has an anti-sticking surface and you can just wipe away all the residue e.g. oils and crumbs once in a while as the basket is easily separated from the bowl which catches the oils.

Very good for the price (bought it at around $150 quite a few months ago so this makes it even better)

Another Tefal product I'm considering is the Tefal Supergrill. At $80 after the code it comes in well under the usual $130-$150. Adjustable thermostat and removable trays sound good. Has anyone used?

    • couldnt find it on tgg's store.
      yes i found it.

    Great price!! Thanks OP!

  • Can i cook a Chiko roll with this? I just hate having to open a bottle of oil just to cook 1 or 2 Chiko rolls.

    • +1

I would say most probably yes. I haven't used this for a Chicko roll, but do spring rolls in it all the time.

    • +1

      Yes, perfect for Chiko.

You can also do them in the oven, come out great.

    • will this cook a dagwood dog to a perfectly crispy medium-rare?

  • Thanks! Too hard to pass up for $100.

  • Stupid question; but what's the difference between this and putting a wire basket into a hot, fan forced oven?

    • +3

Depends how large your existing fan-forced oven is and how long it takes to heat up.
It takes my small air fryer (different brand but similar to this one) three minutes to heat up to 180 degrees C. It takes my large gas fan-forced oven 18 minutes to head up to 180 degrees C. The oven needs to heat the large metal sides of the oven itself before it can maintain heat. I'll have nice crispy chips already cooked in my air fryer before the gas oven has even pre-heated.

These small air fryers are fantastic for feeding one or two people. I've used the oven maybe only three or four times since buying one ~five years ago. But if you have friends over and want to feed three or more people, they just don't have the capacity. I tried loading three servings of chips or chicken nuggets into the small air fryer before, and the ones in the middle sometimes end up a bit soggy, so it's a big fail. Constantly stirring the food around so it heats more evenly reduces this a bit, but it ends up taking 25-30 minutes to cook 3-4 servings, and it's a heck of a lot more work than just using a normal oven.

These are great if you want to reheat single servings of food quickly. For reheating thick sausages I'll sometimes put them in the microwave for a minute or two first to make sure they are hot all the way through, then put them in the air fryer to re-cook and get the juices flowing again.

  • I wonder if the people air frying food that's already been fried such as chips, crumbed fish or chiko rolls realise that it's already been fried in oil.

    • I guess we should just use the microwave from here on out then

  • +1

for the chiko rolls, heat in microwave first, then you can shallow fry to get the crust in a pan like when you cook fish schnitzel, saves on oil.

if you want to fry crumbed fish quickly, thaw first in microwave, then you just fry to crisp the outside, otherwise it takes too long.

Also some of the breville toasters have slots big enough for meat pie … I heat the pie in microwave to thaw out (3 minutes) and then 1-1/2 minutes in the toaster for a crust.

  • Have it. It's very good frier. From cons: there is no auto mix potato as another friers have.
    The rest is very good.

  • What the heck does 800g capacity mean? 800 grams? 800 grams of what exactly? Usually they mention the volume in litres. Nothing on Tefal's website.

    • 0.8L I think.

  • Anyone having issues completing checkout?? Trying to checkout with Click 'n collect with payment via PayPal and I'm constantly getting this b.s. "Something went wrong. Please try to check out again." message with error codes: 70049 70084

    • Same here, tried several times.

    • Me too, have been trying off and on for a couple of hours.

      • Yep, same here. I have about 3 orders in my eBay account that all say "Payment Pending" but nothing debited from PayPal. What a joke.

Looking at the cheaper models in the Philips range…are they worth the extra money compared to this?

    • My exact same thought

  • can I put the raw chicken into the airfryer?

    • Yes

    • I have another brand (Kambrook) and use it to cook chicken, steak, and roast veges. The results are superb. Great time saver for 1 person.

    • Yes, and the skin is crispy while the inside is thoroughly cooked and juicy. I have the Philips XL and it does the job nicely.

  • Postage with GG is just crazy

    • Yeah it's a shame, wanted to buy one but postage was $56.

  • how does this compare to tefal airfryer? apart from the capacity?

  • Something went wrong. Please try to check out again.

  • very tempted but not sure how good relative to phillips

  • I know expired but do they offer extended warranty?

    • Yes. It sayd $26, and price is $129 on the EBay site. C&C.
