Bitdefender Total Security 2018 for 5 Devices (1 Year Duration) $19.99 (Was $109.99) @ BitDefender

1340

Received an email from Bitdefender to purchase a year subscription for a big discount because I signed up for a trial a while ago. I am not sure if the link is targeted only or if it's generic and anyone can use it. Email received:

Hello!
Thank you for using Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition! We hope that everything runs smoothly and you are happy.
However, if you have more than a Windows PC and you're using other operating systems as well (macOS, Android or iOS), it's worth considering an upgrade to Bitdefender Total Security 2018.
This is our unbeatable and ultimate protection solution for you.
• It delivers multiple layers of protection against ransomware
• It uses behavioral threat detection to prevent infections
• It protects your most important documents, your webcam and your your children's online activity
Limited Time Offer! Only this weekend!

Would have purchased as I think Bitdefender is a great security package, but I recently purchased a year license for Kaspersky.

Cheers

The question is, does it activate when you buy it (ie. you get 12 months from today) or can you hang on to the code and use it in 6 months time so you get 12 months from June 2018?

I only wonder because its a good price but my current BitDefender license still has about 170 days left on it and I doubt this would stack :/

    • Activates when you click on the activation email. No date mentioned.

    • +4

I have just renewed my subscription 2 weeks ago so I had 330+ days left on my account.

After I bought this $19.99 deal, I entered the new activation code and that brought my days remaining to 720+ =)

      • +1

Really? That's awesome. I honestly didnt think it would stack.

        • +7

I can confirm that you can stack this code for multiple years worth of subscription - I made three separate purchases and now have 1095 (365 x 3) days remaining on my subscription. Tempted to do a fourth.

EDIT: now I have 1460 days remaining

        • +1

@DrDuck:does it extend to the new versions like 2019 2020 etc? Kinda suck to stay in 2018

        • +1

@boohooimissout: Worried now that in the future you'll be stuck in the past?

        • @YogaPants: just wondering if it automatically upgrades

        • +2

@boohooimissout: The subscription carried over from 2017 to 2018 so I don't see why it wouldn't carry to the new version. Other reasons I'm sure it will carry:

          • You can buy a two year subscription to Total Security 2018 from the BitDefender Store.
          • You can't download old (2017) versions of BitDefender products easily
          • It would be insanely bad PR to restrict subscribers, especially because AVG and Kaspersky upgrade to the latest version
  • I got the email too but not sure if we could buy now and activate the code later. On bright side, I think current deal of this total Security 2018 from Bitdefender is cheapest ever.

Is everyone seeing $19.99? I’m getting $69.98 when I click the link :/

    • +2

I see it, there is a campaign tracking code embedded in the URL.

It could also be because of VPN — if you're not in AU the promo price might not apply

      • Ahh yup that could be it, overseas atm using a VPN. Deal will probably be over by time I get back but thanks anyways

        • +5

Download Wangle VPN on mobile. Australian VPN with servers in oz.

30 day free trial. Will allow you to access deal

        • @Suspect420:

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll try it. But I have TorGuard VPN and using the Australian server doesn’t work

Edit: The Wangle VPN App is kinda bad, stuck on an infinite loop checking for previous purchases when first logging on/subscribe now page. Thanks for the suggestion but I’ve deleted the app - not sure what it’s doing.

    • +1

Comes up as $19.99 for me.

  • I have it coming up as $69. I’m not using a VPN, I’m in Australia. Strange.

    • Disable your AD blocker should works

      • Thanks for the advice, I’ll try doing that.

  • +3

Microsoft Defender is more than capable these days, that you don't really need to invest an a third-party AV product. Especially if you pair Defender with something like UBlock Origin and MalwareBytes.

Anyway, this is probably fine if you're looking for a commercial product.

    • +2

Also AVG is free today only in this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/349959

    • Agreed.

Windows defender on windows 10 + ublock origin & some common sense is all you need. Then run ccleaner every so often. Don't sacrifice any system performance this way either.

With that being said it's a good deal for the technically inept, I sent this deal to my parents.

      • +1

        Ccleaner had malware.

        • -1

Which probably means it will never happen again.

        • +1

@AncientWisdom: huh? How will you check this?

        • -1

@OnlinePred: what I mean is that because of the damage done they will be much more careful in the future. Also been recently purchased by Avast, so if you trust Avast you should trust CCleaner.

        • @AncientWisdom: As long as you formatted your HDD if you used 32bit version I guess you are right.

        • @OnlinePred: Yeah, if you were hit that's probably right - https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/09/cclea…

The tentative conclusion to be drawn from the newly available information is that the vast majority of people who installed the backdoored CCleaner version probably dodged a potentially serious bullet. Out of an abundance of caution, enterprises—including the 540 government agencies Talos said hosted stage one-infected PCs—should reimage their machines, as should consumers who have the backups and expertise to do so or who can afford to hire a professional to do it for them. Reimaging is a much more thorough response than simply running an AV scan, which can often fail to detect infections. Unless new facts come to light, consumers who don't have these resources are probably OK not reimaging their computers.

        • +1

@AncientWisdom: Which you were if you ran the 32bit version with auto update enabled around early September. Which I did. I reformatted and haven't installed ccleaner since. I've just learned how to clear all that stuff using built in windows tools rather than third party apps.

        • @OnlinePred: Fair enough!

  • Yeah the Microsoft offering is quite good, I don't see why anyone would even bother setting up a third party antivirus these days.

Can't believe they would sell any at the RRP.

    • +1

They do sell lots at RRP… businesses absolutely love Anti-Virus products.

    • Businesses are where they make most of the money. Endpoint protection is usually purchased by companies at pretty high price.

    • If you're using Windows 7 and prior, Defender only does spyware so you still need an antivirus.

      • If you regularly install apps from the internet and do dodgy stuff yes

        • I don't actually use AV, I was making the point that Defender is only for spyware on W7 and prior in response to the above comment.

  • +1

3 month free from Facebook. When times up, change account. Rinse. Repeat. Simples

  • -6

Not sure what dodgy sites you upvoters are visiting or what you're downloading but I abandoned third-party AV software 4+ years ago and I've not had a single virus, Trojan, spyware, or malware infection.

    • doesn't necessarily only happen on dodgy sites. see https://wccftech.com/yahoo-s-ad-network-hacked/

      • -4

Can't say I've ever frequented Yahoo or used their services, or any other 1st Gen web services. Perhaps that's my key to success.

        • that was just an example. google is your friend, just have a look at what other high profile pages have been spreading malware over the last year due to ad networks etc being hacked. i'm just saying that it doesn't matter what sites you browse you might get exposed to malware.

      • -2

There's a strong case against using AV software -
        https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/01/antiv… Each to their own.

        • SARDU is free and allows offline virus scanning using various AV's.

    • +1

      That you know of?

    • +1

You're correct with your logic. I think the downvotes are due to your anecdotal evidence. Perhaps a bit more information would help?

For antivirus to be effective the software needs access, permissions and privileges to parts of your operating system which should only be 100% trusted. Otherwise, it would be next to useless.

Since lots of people install antivirus software it becomes a popular place to find and exploit vulnerabilities, and since you have already given the software permission exploits can do whatever it wants in your system.

      e.g. https://securityintelligence.com/news/bad-medicine-symantec-…

Also slows down your system, uses battery on laptops etc.

If you want to install antivirus software I'm not gonna stop you, however, please also consider:
      - installing an adblockers on your browser (e.g. uBlock ORIGIN, note: the Origin word in the name is important)
      - have a good backup system in place
      - only install software that is needed (keep your system lean)
      - have common sense when it comes to emails and attachments
      - avoiding pirated software and sideloading APKs if possible
      - don't connect to public wifi if possible (auto connect off)

For those interested in comparisons: https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/

  • Open the same link in your mobile, tablet and laptop. Hopefully you will see $19.99 somewhere. I got it in my tablet.

  • Ransomware protection alone makes this worth it.

    • +1

      Don't rely on it …

    • Windows Defender has options to help against ransomware too. You'll need to turn it on though. But as @Diji1 says, don't rely on it.

  • Thanks OP, will get it to replace McAfee at home

  • Just to be clear if you running a MAC OS, you will NOT get Bitdender Total Security for MAC OS. Instead you will getting 'Antivirus for Mac'. Is still good a price for 5 multi devices.

  • just purchased even though I have 170 days left with norton 360. Can I activate this product via the email link in 170 days? If not then I'll uninstall Norton and install this

    Thanks

    • +1

Yes, I had a chat with their support team and they confirmed that we could activate it anytime we want. Your subscription starts from the day you activate it.

  • Thanks! It stacked with my existing subscription.

    Edit:

In case it's helpful: To get the link to work I had to use Microsoft Edge (Chrome incognito didn't show the reduced price).

Likely won't matter for others, but also had to use a VPN to look like I'm in oz (as I'm overseas at the moment).

    • +2

It also stacks upon itself if you want to add multiple years with the promo price. I just bought the subscription three times and activated it via email and now I have 1095 days remaining (I started at 0).

      • +1

Cheers! 800 days should be enough. I'm expecting my PC will be gain sentience before then anyway.

        • +1

Then you will become the virus that it needs to delete…

        • +1

If you buy a new PC, you could install it on that as well as long as it's removed from the old PC. Only the number of devices count, and it's not permanently tied to any particular device.

        • @CocaKoala: You can also remove a device using BitDefender Central

  • Sophos Home should be good enough and better than AVG.

    Just get Sophos Home.

  • +6

    The best price I've seen!

Here's a neat trick for you all. I discovered it accidentally. You should make sure you switch Auto Renewal off, then, a little box will pop up, begging you to switch it on, along with a promise that you'll be charged the same price next year.

    Neat!!!!!

    • Ye, confirmed that, you will get another email after paid:

Since you opted for the automatic renewal option, you receive special benefits when renewing on December 15, 2018. Thank you for choosing Bitdefender!

Your new special price: 19.99 AUD
      Old price: 109.99 AUD
      Next billing date:2018-12-15 10:02:35

    • Great job OP.
I'm new to Bitdefender, how do I turn off auto renewal?

      • Yes I would like to know that too.

      • +3

You'll have to ad it to cart, proceed to checkout. In your cart, just below the title of the product, ie "Bitdefender Total Security", there should be a italicised, underlined, greyed out "Auto Renewal". Click that and opt out.

You will be charged next year andnot at the end of your subscription, so buying more than 1 copy for yourself isn't helpful

        • oops forgot to do that now they offered $73 next year :(

        • Jesus, that's borderline evil.

      • +1

"Re how to disable auto renewal later", you need an Avangate account (not Bitdefender Central account):

        1. Use your order number and email to create an Avangate account at https://secure.avangate.com/myaccount/
        2. Once you get your account created and login
        3. In My Products tab, you should able to see the link "Stop automatic subscription renewal"
        • you should be able to cancel via paypal if you paid via paypal

How could this be a deal when there is avg for free?

    • Because AVG is garbage compared to Bitdefender. It's like asking, "why eat steak when I could just it yesterdays cast outs from the trash?"

Bitdefender basically ranks #1 constantly next to Kaspersky - that being said, IMO most people are probably better off running windows defender and malwarebytes.

      • There is one review that said its like Olympians, where one is the gold medalist and the other is just close to it.

So perhaps it's like marble 9 wagyu vs marble 6?

        • It's not.

    • +2

AVG collects and sells your (non-identifiable) data, such as browsing and search history. Some people are not ok with this, some are.

  • Thanks OP!

Had 65 days left, and now I have 430 days left. Was waiting for a deal.

  • So what happens at the end of the subscription period? Would I still be getting virus database updates?

    Thanks

PS. I've always used free options like free bitdefender.

  • I had a live chat with BitDefender support, and they confirmed that you could activate it whenever you want, and you could also give it to someone else if you desire. Just don't activate it in your name if you're planning to gift away. :)

Currently I am in Australia but using a VPN out of France, and with Chrome or firefox I still get the AUD19.99 deal too :-). As always, we suck with our purchase timing, we purchased a full year of BD Internet Security 2018 for the awesome deal price of $34.99 a couple of weeks ago. Comm Bank also hit us up for an international transaction fee even though BD took the payment in AU bucks (Gotta love Comm Bank, God bless them for their Christmas spirit. They will find fees for fees if they can). We paid using our CommBank Mastercard. So noteworthy that this price will be a bit more for any of you guys using the same method of payment. I am interested what happens if I buy a year opf this on top of nearly a full year of their Internet Security product. I guess that it will not give us the stacked 2 years (This product is one step up, even though it is currently cheaper in price that BD I/S 2018 product.

    • See my previous comment:

I can confirm that you can stack this code for multiple years worth of subscription - I made three separate purchases and now have 1095 (365 x 3) days remaining on my subscription. Tempted to do a fourth.

EDIT: now I have 1460 days remaining

      • +1

Hey there DrDuck, I did see that comment, and thank you for your reply :-) , but in my case I would be adding a year from another product (My current BD app is their Internet Security 2018, this is their Total Security 2018, so my extra year is not really as straight forward (Not apples with apples so to speak). Love that you have four years of product for probably less than their RRP for one year. Once I have finished scratching my head and thinking about it, I may go ahead and do it anyway, if so I will let others know how it stacks with other versions/ levels of their software packages.

        • Good point. I went with 4 years as I'll be using the same subscription for the relatives and it's easier than juggling to the next product 12 months from now

        • +2

Hey there you can email support to stack manually. They have done this for me before and moved all my licenses into one

        • @AussieMark: Thanks for that, but I just went ahead and added the new licence to my existing account and it upgraded the original to Total as well, no need to ask BD staff to do it for me. then I went and purchased another 1 year each day for a couple of days, now I have 5 years before expiry. I did ask on chat about the auto renewal that is part of what I signed up for, and the person on chat said that they may still bill us auto next year (As the payment is through a company outside of BD, this company do not know how long you have). If that happens,. I will be billed at $19.99 again (Price locked guarantee), then I will go ahead and email that company to stop the auto payments (Plus, my credit card will be a new expiry in about 6 months, current one expires 2018, and I think that stops them taking any more funds without asking me for a new renewal date)

  • I only have a device need to Secure can I just buy one for $4 instead of 5 for $20?

    • Bargain level : 1000

  • I'm getting $69, has it ended?

    • Solved issue

  • It may not what you want to hear after 100 up-votes, but Kaspersky Anti-virus is now free, and Comodore Firewall is also free (you need to install the AV before the Firewall). Mobile device are not affected by viruses or malwares (at least not the ones not rooted).

    • +2

if you're not paying for something, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold

  • Thanks OP

  • Good deal on Bitdefender, but why not save money with just as good security from Kaspersky?

Bitdefender beats kaspersky in all tests plus kaspersky has been found to be linked with kgb backdoor

  • Thaanks for sharing OP, this is the best price for bitdefender , hands down the #1 AV out there based on most independent labs.

  • Thanks, great price. I even stacked it onto my existing half year remaining subscription. I'm wondering if I should buy multiple annual subscriptions so it'll take me through multiple years.

  • Thanks for this share OP. Great price for a decent AV

I started looking for a new AV yesterday so perfect timing.

  • Unfortunately the password manager only stores passwords in their cloud server and not locally.

  • just got this - and activated autorenewal to get this same deal next year too without paying upfront :)

Auto renewal will give you higher price next year be careful
