The Good Guys' Price Guarantee - Doesn't Apply to Them, Only Competitors, I Lost out on $200

Hey guys

I recently bought a TV from the good guys around 10 days ago. Now the good guys started a promotion, I found that the TV price suddenly dropped by 200$. so I called the good guys for a price guarantee, they claim that I can't use price guarantee for this case. I can only use this price guarantee for their competitors.

so guys, do you have any strategy for my case? or I should just do nothing and take the hit?!

Thanks, guys

Updates:

so there are couple of funny guys here to protect The GOOD Guys. Some of they keep use different account to do personal attack. that's very funny. Happy wasting time and keep more consumers away from you.

Unfortunately they have the "competitors" mentioned quite prominently so I don't think you have a case….. sorry. They really should guarantee their own prices for up to 30 days (maybe just pay the difference though).

"How does the 30 DAY PRICE GUARANTEE work?

After buying from The Good Guys, if you do happen to find same product advertised at a cheaper price by a competitor* within 30 days, you can claim the 30 Day Price Guarantee. This means we’ll give you back 120% of the price difference. We can give you the difference either as a store credit for The Good Guys via email within two working days, or as a PAY LESS eftpos card mailed to you within 21 working days. Just provide your receipt and evidence of the lower advertised price and complete the online claim form. We’ll verify the price is current and that the item is available for immediate sale and delivery. We’ll verify the details and arrange for your store credit or PAY LESS eftpos card to get to you."

I mean $200 is not a big deal. But come on, not in 10 days, I feel the good guys is fooling buyers…I can accept 30 days later. from now on, I'd be very careful with the good guys in future.

      • +1

I agree! $200 drop in 10 days is ridiculous!! They play around with prices like the Petrol Stations. They take us for a fool IMO.
        Same scenario happened to me.
I purchased an LG TV @ HN for $1640 … and then 13 days later it dropped by $144.
I went in and complained to the Franchisee. He gave me a store credit and it will apply to another purchase. So a win/win for both of us.
I would complain to someone with Authority and not give up.
Provide evidence (Screenshot) of the same discounted TV and obviously your receipt for proof. The price may jump again so make sure you cover yourself.

        Good luck

        • Thanks man, that's very helpful!!! best regards

I don't get the point of the problem with $200 in 10 days? Are they supposed to drop it by $2 a day for 100 days or something?

        • so why on the earth they invented a price guarantee policy? just to show how smart they are or what?!

    • +1

They really should guarantee their own prices for up to 30 days (maybe just pay the difference though).

They do, it's just a paid extra.

      https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/concierge/concierge-price-shi…

      • no one remind me about it when I made my purchase, damn!

        • I think you can still buy it for up to 30 days later.. Try in store..

  • +3

JB hifi will refund the difference back onto a gift card so mot sure why TGG will not considering same ownership now. Raise it with head office maybe

    • yes, you're right. ask whether they'd happy if the item they purchased got price dropped 20% just in 10 days.

    • -1

JB hifi will refund the difference back onto a gift card

      The same applies to tgg.

arrange for your store credit or PAY LESS eftpos card to get to you."

Keep an eye on the competitors to see if they match the deal (if they also have the same tv in stock)
Keep an eye on Boxing Day sales, after all you do have 30 days.
No need to call, price guarantee can be completed online. Just need proof (keep screenshots etc)
And yes, it's clearly in the conditions that it doesn't apply to themselves.

so guys, do you have any strategy for my case? or I should just do nothing and take the hit?!

What 'hit'? You were happy buying it for that price…

    • +2

I agree with Spackbace, you would possibly have regret getting the difference back as there is a TV price war this week and you will most likely find it matched if not cheaper at jb hi-fi. When that's happens you will get 120% the difference instead of just the difference in TGG price.

Jump on Price Hipster and set up some price alerts for each store that sells your TV.

Edit. Btw the bigger the price drop at a competitor the bigger the 20% difference becomes. When my TV dropped $1000 at JB Hi Fi I cried until I remembered the price guarantee

    • I didn't realise buying electronic devices just like buying stock 😂

Did you pay on credit card? Some have price drop insurance.

    • yes, anz credit card. but do they have such insurance ?!

      • +3

If you have a platinum card or higher.

Is processing a return and then re-buying it something to consider?

    • good one, but probably charge you restock fee

  • +3

just buy another one, then return it with the old receipt

    • they probably charge you restock fee

      • +2

        nope they don't

  • +2

Would you be whingeing if the price had gone up?

    There is no hit.

    Prices change

  • +2

    You haven't lost $200.

If rump steak at Woolies is $30 normally and one week it's on sale for $20, you don't get your money back, nor did you lose $10.

    • +1

Well a TV is not perishable (nor that it is obsolete in 10 days time) however they need to flog off the rump steak while they can before it expires.
Do you think specials are all about matching the competitors?

The question I would like to ask the audience that disagrees:

How would you feel if it happened to you? Would you "suck it up" or kick up a stink?
How many hours do you have to work to generate a NET $200?

      Thus the formula;

Time wasted indirectly working for the Good Guys = $200/$ ph

      • +2

        Prices over time come down.

You can have it today at X price or wait for it to invariably come down to price Y.

You think a store should ring around all the people who it has sold products to over a week ago and ask if its ok if they put an item on special or will their feeling be hurt?

        I don't think thats a credible position.

They are a business and as such its up to them to decide when things go on special.

        • I think many people have a general understanding that prices drop and fluctuate over a decent period.

But I think that $200 drop for an item after 10 days is completely unacceptable!

I would like to ask you a direct question…. if this happened to you, that is purchased a "respectably priced item: I.e. a $1K+ … and not a $39.90 item", would you accept a price drop of $200 over 10 days and suck it up?

        • +2

          @vinni9284:

          after 10 days

Are they supposed to release a memo to everyone: hey all, don't buy today, we'll be dropping the price

What about the guy that bought 2 days before the drop? Or the guy that bought 3 weeks before?

At some point a price drop will happen, and invariably someone will buy before it does.

Logic doesn't seem to be realised in half the comments on this thread.

        • @vinni9284:
          What choice is there.
Specials are a fact of life.
What is a car worth the moment its driven home from the showroom?
I don't think a store has any obligation to make sure you get the best price.
We wouldn't need Ozbargain if this was the case.

I bought my camera (D500) when JBHIFI for $2130.
People days before had payed $2999.
When the special was over the price jumped back up.
$200 was nothing compared to that.
Its the way of the world.

Ebay had some 20% specials recently.
Were the vendors expected to offer a shoulder to cry on for those who missed out?

        • @Rifraf:

Sorry, but you still haven't answered my question.

In this case scenario, would you accept the loss?

This is a bricks and mortar business and not online eBay (I assumed the OP purchased this in person)

In my view, this is the business model:

You have to chase things up if it's not correct or if you feel that you have been treated unfairly.

That's the way it is, otherwise they will play dumb and suffer form acute subjective amnesia.

We have to fight for what is right.

Too many people have this "suck it up …. we all get shafted anyway" attitude

          Cheers

          @vinni9284:

OK I have a question for you - if the price went up by $200 10 days later, would you be rushing to the store to give them more money?

OP was happy to buy at the price they paid. Case closed.

        • @Spackbace:

Well it is up to the purchaser to chase things up that they feel that they have been treated unfairly.

Well … ironically being a member of supercheap auto do inform a price drop after a purchase and refund the difference.

"If a product you’ve purchased goes on special within two weeks, we’ll credit the difference direct to your Club Account"

          http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/clubplus

        • @Spackbace:

You reckon the prices aren't already inflated?
          They make money either way

        • @vinni9284:

Yep but they won't do shit if a competitor puts it on sale, GGs does and they have more competitors.

And you need to be signed up to the SCA club to do it, they won't just honour it out of the goodness of their heart.

        • +2

          @vinni9284:

OP bought at that price. If they paid too much then they're either an idiot or really wanted the tv that day and couldn't wait.

        • @Spackbace:

          Haha. Fair enough.

That's my view anyway and I would fight it.

          Cheers

          @vinni9284:

I'd be naming the product on here and kindly asking the community to look out for a cheaper price over the 30 days, not acting like a self-entitled twat and slagging those that don't agree with me (see reference to tainted milk post)

        • @Spackbace:

          Fair call

      • it did just happen to me. And it was a TV and it was $200.

sony 9000 tv, I see someone posted for around $1500, I paid $1700 and thohght that was a great deal (compared to the norm $2500-$3000).
I havent posted here whinging, I am happy I have the TV.

I understand the feeling - if only I waited a week, a month etc but, hey, you'd be waiting forever.

And the supermarket example is still valid too, all items go up and down in price. And its nothing to do with flogging off almost expired food - the specials are planned well before any expiry, for the catalogue sales.

        • +1

          Probably same as op.

And seems to be nearly $2k everywhere now.
So while you might have lost $200, you've saved compared to now

        • +1

          @Spackbace:

Maybe mate. It doesn't worry me the slightest I have the tv and it's great.

  • The good guys online store works differently from their physical stores.
I couldn't get them to apply a promotion which the online store had, they essentially told me to buy it online from their store.

    Crazy I know!

  • I've never experienced a price drop that large, but I've gone back to the Good Guys in the past, asked for a manager and then appealed to their better nature and common sense, and in EVERY instance they have seen reason and approved a refund for the difference. I buy from GG a LOT, so they saw I was a regular customer and must have realised it would cost them more to lose me as a customer.

  • +1

I don't understand. Places drop prices all the time and have sales all the time. I don't see how poor timing on your behalf is worthy of your hate towards TGG?

  • Got caught in this too, better to use credit card that has price protection to pay for this purchase.

  • armedgoat did you call the Good Guys store in Maribyrnong by any chance? I overheard one of their staff talking to someone over the phone about TV’s and price guarantees whilst I was looking for a new laptop, and I was wondering if that was you.
