Lost. Attempt Port or Abandon Ship?

So it turns out my phone is not under my name… and they don't accept payment from me till I get the 'your bill is late reminder' along with a direct link to pay. I've asked the shop for help, they redirected me online, which sent me back to the shop. Do I just stop paying the bill hope they'll cut me off?

The only problem is I've got 500 business cards with that number, being the super eager graduate I was a couple years ago…

Who owns the phone number? Why can’t you get them to transfer ownership?

I’m guessing it’s a number you’ve had since you were a teenager. I had to get my old man to transfer ownership of my number to me so I could pay for it myself. It took a while but it can be done.

    • These days it's often possible for the account holder to initiate ownership transfer online.

    • I don't know who owns it, I thought it was me because I opened the account and pay the bills. That's the thing. And I've yet to convince someone to tell me who's name it's under. We attempted to do data share in the group so it's possible that one of the other four people involved took it? Anyway data share failed…

      • Who is the bill issued to?!

        • It doesn't say as I receive it as a text with a link with the account number.

      • How long have you had the number? How have you NEVER received a bill in that time? Does anyone in the groupshare get bills for this account?

        • I'd say two years? Bills have always been through the app, no name. One of the others gets my bill too, but I'm the only one paying for it.

        • @anastasiastarz: Have you checked to see if the account is under the name of the person getting the bill?

          @anastasiastarz:

What provider is the phone number with?

Why don't you go to their website and do something like a "lost password" so that they send a verification SMS to your phone. Then you can use that code to access the online account?

Can't you ask every member of the "cell"/"group"/"committee" if they signed up? Or get each of them to ring until they're validated? How many are in this group? Do you still keep in touch?

It could also help if you name the service provider (or have I missed it)? Frankly, there are often "workarounds" for most of these issues. Of course you could lie and try a few names when calling up but this shouldn't be necessary.

try porting it, tick the box that says 'i am authorised to do this'

    • THis worked for me! When I was a teenager my phone number was on my Dad’s name. To switch it over you had to physically go in to the shop and that was really difficult because he was away a lot and we lived in different states when I moved out to go to college. So porting was always a pain, needing his verbal permission. Somewhere along the line I ported and could just put my name down as the new account holder :D

So I would definitely give this advice a try!

  • Don't leave unpaid bills, they will report you to the credit rating agencies and it will be recorded on your credit file.

Not that i condone stealing the number but there is often very poor security around porting. Especially if there is a commission for the sales person.

  • If it's a post paid account I thought all they checked for porting is the account number

    • I certainly hope so.

    • pretty sure the process includes checking the account owner's DOB as well. Whether or not everyone does that…

      • DOB is for prepaid services because they don't have an account number

Attempt to port … what's the worst that can happen … computer says no?

  • Just ring up and speak to a manager. If that doesn't work, speak to his boss. Continue until fixed or you reach the CEO.

    • I went into the shop, they sent me online, online sent me back to the shop.

      • I'm not sure which part of my instructions are hard to understand.

        • They said "my hands are tied" and hung up.

        • @anastasiastarz: Try harder
