If you've recently picked up a Raspberry Pi, I can recommend this premium case, currently 20% off. It's a big hunk of aluminium that acts as a heat sink. You won't need a fan, so this can run silent and cool. Here's a comparison showing how impressive the cooling is vs attaching the standard Rpi heatsinks.

This is the Gen2 that is designed primarily for the Pi 3, not the earlier ones.

You don't necessarily need this. For me though, running mine in Qld summers, I've found this works best for my needs.

Thanks, good to know about this case.. However, the current price looks to be the normal price. It was USD$3 less last month before returning to the current price where it has been most of the year.

    • Dang, wish I saw it when it hit $12.95

Hmm. I didn't check camelcamelcamel. Thanks.

Can't remember how much I bought mine for as it was a few months ago now but can agree. The pi does not slow down like it used to when it got hot due to our 'beautiful' NT weather.

Pi can run for hours now transcoding videos and playing games without overheating.

Edit: More info. Before using the FLIRC case, I just had heatsinks and it sat inside the official Pi case. It got HOT

  • I got this one from fasttech a while back (for a lot cheaper then it is now).

I think this is a better option if you need the headers. Also looks nicer, but may not have as much heat capacitance as this Flirc case.

However one problem with these aluminium boxes is it heavily reduces wifi signal… i ended up doing an external antenna mod on my rpi because of this.

    • The bottom of the Flirc case is plastic, which may alleviate any issues with the radios.

Case almost cost the same price as the pie, 😂

    • Yep. It adds up. An official PSU is $20 and add a MicroSD on top of that, plus all the cables you'll need to connect it to something.

  • What are the video decoding limitations of this device?

    • This device is just a computer case.

If you mean the Raspberry Pi, I couldn't comment. It would depend on OS and other factors. They're very popular so I'm sure Google will have the answers to your questions.

  • I very much doubt it would out perform a fan and heatsink combination.

Solid overclock is required for N64.

    • I'm sure you're right about the fan. But I'd say that this is the best silent, no moving parts option.

Did you check the link above where they tested with a big overclock?

      • I don't know about best…

I'm curious how those cheap eBay passive ones perform. They're like half the price of the Flirc.

        • Your url is broken, but I'm sure you're right, there may well be other cases that do the same thing thing better. I found one after posting this that outperforms the Flirc case but it costs USD$60.

The Flirc is simply a popular case that is widely used and well regarded, but probably too expensive for most people buying into the $40 computer board thing. I've had a number of them since the v1 model B and found this worked really well.

        • @t3chshopper: whoops! On mobile. Sorry.

Yeah, it's probably the same case you're referring to, 65USD. Just being facetious really.

    • I challenge you to run a liquid nitrogen pi and see how hard it'll go.

As said above, nearly same price as the Pi, no deal here.
