Cancer Council Ultra 1L SPF50+ Sunscreen $24.99 with Free Shipping @ Chemist Warehouse

410

Hi all,

I was looking to replenish my previous 1L of sunscreen and stumbled upon this deal.

Combine with this deal for free shipping!

Normal price is apparently $43.50 and Amcal sell it for $33.95. I don't think Coles and Woolworths sell the 1L variants. Even so, this is still cheaper per litre than this deal on the Ultra.

I did some reading and it seems this product is not for everyone. People have complained heavily on review websites that they get rashes or still burn with this product. I personally have never had issues with this brand (have been using the Everyday product) if I apply it properly.

There are also other deals:
Everyday 1L: $19.99 Note: needs 1c more for free shipping.
Work 1L: $24.99

The work sunscreen is much better. Works great for sport because it's non-greasy at all.

  • +1

ha whenever i see free shipping i jump on and have a look, then I add about $100 to my cart, which would be free shipping anyway :S

  • if you read how much to apply, 1litre doesn’t go far, so yeah cheap, effective screen is the go due to how much you need to use.

    will get some.

    • 1L has lasted me almost 3 years. I use it quite a bit in summer and adjacent months. Never really read the application instructions.

Try Aldi's for around $8 (last time we bought a couple of years ago) - could be different now, but no where near $25.

  • +1

Why is sunscreen so expensive in a country like Australia?

    • +1

Because who would buy sunscreen in the UK for example?

      • +2

People going on holiday, people going to the beach in the summer, lots of people actually.

        • I meant it's less needed in the UK compared to OZ.

        • @ihbh: yes but there's more people so maybe the sales are about the same. shrugs idunno

        • Because it's kind of a necessity here so they charge what they like knowing that people will buy it because they need it.

    • +1

Because it's something we need so they can charge more for it.

    • +1

It’s not, the same thing is $8 at Coles, it works great and is not greasy like the Cancer council stuff.

    • It really isn't. I had to buy some at a pharmacy in the US and paid $18USD for a 100ml bottle (I picked not the cheapest but I think the one I picked was a fair 'median' price from that store).

Does anyone know any quality Zinc based products?
I have allergies to sunscreen, even the ones for sensitive skin

    • +2
    • SunSense Sensitive Invisible is fantastic. (Note: make sure it is the Invisible version - they have a very similar looking one that is not good). Only Zinc as an active and it practically evaporates after application.

I don't know why anyone would want to use horrible chemical sunscreen like this deal. Zinc all the way baby!

      • Brilliant! I'll give it a go after I finish my bottle of InvisibleZinc. Invisible Zinc isn't so invisible per se but it does the job.
But always willing to give other brands a go

    • Try Hamiltons sensitive (or the toddler one - same formula)

      • I've tried it, Still had a bit of skin irritation :( Looks like it'll have to be zinc for me. the physical protection without absorbing into the skin seems to work best for me but thanks for the recommendation

        • Key Sun Clear Zinke then, I can't vouch for it but it seems like good quality ingredients

    • We use natural instinct. it's pretty good for us. a bit oily though

From memory I believe a recent lab test showed cancer council was one of the few sunscreens that actually had the SPF rating they advertised. A few advertised as SPF 50 and were seen to be closer to 20! Thanks OP!

    • -1

Not true, they all meet the Australian Standard otherwise they get pulled, even the spray on stuff which the banned recently. The product was fine, the application was being done incorrectly.

      • See Kmeister's link above

    • +1

Do you have any links to this lab test?

  • -1

    Thanks, OP.

As it is a Cancer Council product I can also claim back on my extras health insurance. Cheers!

Since everyone is putting their own suggestions in, can I suggest this:

    http://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/84804/Cetaphil-Sun-SP…

The advice I got for this sunscreen was from the doctor at the skin check clinic I go to, who strongly recommended a liposomal sunscreen over a physical or chemical one. Ive gone through about 4 tubes of this stuff since, and it is incredible sunscreen.

    • +1

What do you mean by incredible?

      • +3

It fights the sun in an interplanetary battle.

        • Sun got awarded planetary status prior to the battle?

      • +1

Its takes the best attributes of both a chemical sunscreen (like the one in the deal) and a physical sunscreen (like the zinc oxide ones people recommended above). I previously tried to always find a sunscreen that had both the chemical and physical barrier, but this works better. The only downside I have ever found was that it is a little bit pricey, and it can leave a bit of a minor sticky feeling.

I found with the chemical ones that there is the risk of it being absorbed in the blood, and the physical ones I found dont tolerate 'wear and tear' like sweating, swimming, rubbing with towels, etc.

Since using it i have never been burnt provided I apply it correctly. The Kids version I linked is also good for sensitive skin, plus it comes in a pump bottle which has a very large spout which is easy to dispense.

        • Thanks, is there adult version?

  • +2

I've got fair skin so go through heaps of sunscreen, so tried them all. Cancer council is good. Banana boat is rubbish. Aldi small tubes are good, but extremely thick and hard to rub in.

I get this now. Extremely light and absorbs in quickly without any effort. Also supports a good cause.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. Price looks good, I wonder how it would compare in a full lab test.

Coles 1lt SPF 50+ is $9 not sure why you would pay this much for the same thing.

    • +1
      1. I doubt the rating is as advertised.
      2. The application could be way more troublesome than alternatives.
      3. No way way in hell I'd support Coles over Cancer Council.
      • +3

        I support my wallet.

        • Good call.

      • +2

Why do you doubt the rating?

The product is sold by Coles, you know what that means? Coles has "deep pockets", if the product is not SPF50 Coles is liable and will lose a court action.

The Choice test linked above while interesting admitted they tested one batch, they admitted that other batches could be different and gave the reasons, they admitted that above SPF30 is adequate.

The truth is that the price of Cancer Council sunscreens is excessive. They should be selling cheaper products to spur sunscreen usage, instead they are premium priced.

Also I find Cancer Councli sunscreen very greasy.

        • Does anyone know how much money raised by selling their products go into the "good cause" the OP was talking about? I tried to find this information from their website, but I could not.

        • Indeed. Cancer council's is more expensive because they don't want people to buy their product and for people get skin cancer instead. That way their "cause" gets more support because there are more people with cancer…

^ It's a joke before anyone gets offended lol

    • The Woolworths 1L SPF 50 is also $9.

  • Woolies, BigW, Coles, Aldi…. many other options. Cancer Council products is the biggest marketing joke in this country

  • Is this product superior in some form? For example, how does it compare to something like the Le Tan SPF50+ lotion at $14.99? https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/Buy/69979/Le-Tan-SPF-50-…

  • Just wanted to say this is also available in store (though perhaps / prob already been said in the thread) @ 24.99. Great price for this sunscreen.
