½ Price Sunscreen & Tanning eg Cancer Council Ultra Sunscreen SPF 50+ 500 mL $13 (Save $15.60) @ Coles

200

Coles is selling all sunscreen and tanning products at half price or better excluding aftersun, clearance and Every Day items this week.

I think the best value is this 500 mL pump pack from the Cancer Council. It's the cheapest it's been since December 2016 and only $2.60 per 100 mL.

If quantity is important, it'd be worth considering Le Tan's 1L 50+ at Chemist Warehouse for $16.99. That's $1.69 per 100mL.
The 10% off FRENZY code is still working too, if you're ordering other stuff from them as well.

I just bought a 1 litre of the woolworths brand sunscreen the other day for $9 don't see the value in paying more for a brand name.

    • I wonder how good the woolies one is. Not all sunscreen is the same.

Buying Cancer Council also means you're supporting research.

      • +1

What percentage of the purchase price goes towards research?

        • +1

Confirmation that some money from product sales goes towards research funding: http://annualreview.cancer.org.au/2015-16/fundraising/sun-pr… . Quote: "All royalties received from the sale of Cancer Council sun protection products contribute to our research funding"

And from this report, https://www.cancercouncil.com.au/annualreport2013/our-perfor… , in 2013, about 20% of their total revenue went towards research. From this I can't work out how much of the sale of a bottle of sunscreen goes towards research but from all of the above it seems to be at least something.

        • @eDust: well that's comforting ☺

        • @eDust: Hmm, so it's just royalties rather than profits? That means they're only getting money from their name. If supporting them is the idea, I wonder if it'd be more supportive to buy good cheap sunscreen elsewhere and donate the difference to them directly.

        • @eug:

Yeah I don't know. I guess Cancer Council aren't in the business of running factories. But at least they're raising awareness, helping to prevent cancer by making these products available, and putting million of dollars into real research. That's just my take, I'm sure it's more complicated than that.

      • Hahaha.

This was one of only 2 brands that actually live up to the 50 plus title. All the rest failed in tests done by choice mag

    • Might be worth keeping in mind that Choice tested the zinc version of their sunscreen. This one here doesn't contain zinc.

      Is that a joke?

I don't have the time or the knowledge to be performing my own tests on sunscreens to see if this brand or any of the others cause skin cancer.

As someone who cuts out skin cancers daily I can confirm sun protection is a necessary evil.

  • +1

In relation to whether sunscreen causes skin cancer it is not known if wearing sunscreen every day is actually bad for you but it’s a necessary evil as it’s either burn to a crisp and have an increased risk of skin cancer or wear sunscreen and reduce the risk.

A couple of things to keep in mind.

"Sunscreens are designed to remain at original strength for up to three years. This means that you can use leftover sunscreen from one year to the next. Some sunscreens include an expiration date — a date indicating when they're no longer effective. Discard sunscreen that is past its expiration date." Mayo clinic.

Do not buy a large size sunscreen unless you intend to use it all.

Don't forget the other components of the slip, slop, slap. Ensure you are covered up and have a hat. In my case I don't stay out in the sun for long periods and ensure I walk on the shady side of the street as often as I can.
