New Optus MVNO Amaysim.com.au $0.15/Min No Flagfall, Available Prepaid (90 Day) or Post Paid

90

Not sure if it qualifies as a deal as it is a standard price, but it is a new company which not everyone will know about and the prices are competitive for certain users. I could not find any other posts relating to this company.

The Sim is $2 in shops (no Credit) or $5 online with $5 credit. There is also a bonus $5 credit on first recharge before end of Dec).

They have a Flat call rate of $0.15 per-minute (no Flagfall), $0.12 for Australian SMS messages and $0.05 per MB for data, with an option to choose a 1GB data pack for AU$9.90 (30 day Exp).

All credit, whether purchased pre or post paid has a 90-day expiry, with the exception of the data pack which has a 30-day expiry.

Their Call centre is based in Australia.

Some of the negatives I see are:
Calls charged per minute
Data rounded up to full MB
Calls to 13,15, & 18 numbers $0.29/min

I think it's not bad for low volume users who will like the call rate and 90 day expiry, with the option being post paid so no worries about buying recharges. Probably not as useful for smart phone owners who constantly poll their email servers (unless their device is always in session).

    Big gotcha: data is rounded up to MB per session.
    Lots of small sessions, e.g. email polling or weather applet, will be very expensive. Only OK if you occasionally use data, or keep a constant session open.

    And I hate the way they say "no flagfall" when they have per-minute charging. The BS sales people are redefining the English language.

    • Yeah, that is why I put per MB charging as a negative and said it's probably not best for smartphones.

      • "per MB" doesn't mean "rounded up", and most people wouldn't know what a session is anyway.
        Sorry I didn't read all your post.

        • No worries, I've made it clearer in the negatives.

      • I could imagine the iphone 4 owners with push enabled.

        Whoops, gripped it the wrong way, bummer just cost me another Mb.

        I think its a great plan for low volume users though.

    This deal is NOT that cheap compared to deals that already exist.
    Have a look at the TPG PAYG deal, its cheaper in every way.

    • I disagree. If you make many calls of mimimum duration, this is a better deal than TPG.
      15 cents versus TPG's 19.9 cent minimum.

      • +1

        WRONG.
        TPG is "per second billing"
        The ONLY time it is cheaper than TPG is if your call go's for between 31&59 seconds.

        Eg:

        1 second call
        TPG = 10c, Asim = 15c

        30 second call
        TPG = 15c, Asim = 15c

        1 min 1 sec call
        TPG = 20c, Asim = 30c

        5 min 1 sec call
        TPG = 60c, Asim = 75c

        And for that 29 seconds that they are a cent or two cheaper the savings are well and truly lost if you make an sms.

        TPG = 10c, Asim = 12c

        Or use the internet

        TPG = 2.75 cents rounded to 100kb
        Asim = 5 cents (double) and rounded to 1mb (absolute joke)

        Also TPG gives you 50mb FREE each month.

        And there is no expiry on credit.

        • I just didn't agree with your blanket statement that TPG is "cheaper in every way".
          Your own calculations have shown that not to be the case.
          Yes, overall TPG is cheaper but some may prefer to have the control over their spending that a prepaid account affords. TPG's direct debit method can allow costs to get out of hand much more easily.

      • for 30 sec to 1min calls, this one can be cheaper than TPG (since this doesn't have flagfall)
        Also, you can choose limited numbers from the 0466 or 0435 prefix, including repeated digits, unlike TPG where you cannot choose a number.
        Voted positive due to the latter.

    • This being ozbargain and all, you will need to include other costs for a comparison.

      1. You have also not included the $1 a month for TPG, where this has no ongoing costs.
      2. on TPG 13/1300 numbers are $0.35 flagfall + $1.02 Per Min (vs $0.29/min no ff)
      3. on TPG 1800 numbers are $0.35 flagfall + $0.62 Per 30 Sec (vs $0.29/min no ff)
      4. on TPG national MMS $.60 vs $0.49
      5. on TPG Diversions $0.198/min vs )$0.15/min
      6. TPG voicemail deposit $0.30/min vs (not mentioned so might be free $0.15/min at worst)
      7. TPG voicemail retrieval $0.30/min vs $0.15/min
      8. much cheaper international calls. eg NZ on TPG $.51/min+$0.30 vs $0.15/min

      TPG is Hardly cheaper in every way…

      Also you cannot make 3G Video calls on TPG, $0.49/min here.

      Not a plan for everyone, but should suit some.

    I'm giving this a '+1' for being reasonably cheap AND transparent. So, so sick of capped plans with 'big value' and extortionate flag/call/text rates. I like per second billing too - but I'd rather take this over a scheme with an undeserved up front flagfall charge.
