Best Ice Coffee? Thoughts on Dare Cold Press / Barista Bros Ice Coffees?

So, I was at Coles yesterday and got one of these for $2 as it was on special and it seemed alright to try.

The strong latte option was what I picked and good lord it tastes terrible.
It actually tastes like when you just put a teaspoon of cheap freeze dried coffee in water with a bit of milk.

Should've got the Barista Bros Ice Coffee for $2.50 as I am quite sure it would have been better, although I haven't tried it.

My question is: How did you find both of these and which one do you prefer?

Seeing as it has been decided that both of these are quite bad - New question: which is your favourite ice coffee, where can you get it and how much is it?

    • That'd be Caphe'Sua Da Bob.

Iced coffee in a bottle is for those without tastebuds.

I'm sure the Japanese supermarket will also change my life but that doesn't mean I'm necessarily willing to try it - once was enough for me.

What's in a Vietnamese iced coffee that makes it different?

      • +5

"What's in a Vietnamese iced coffee that makes it different?"

        Coffee

        • -6

Is iced coffee in a bottle for children or those without tastebuds? You've edited so much its kind of lost its meaning.
More like caffeinated water is for those without tastebuds.

Also, only post if it's helpful. Obviously there is coffee in iced coffee.

      • Coffee is drip fed onto condensed milk. Ice is added after.

Not for people who doesnt enjoy strong coffee and its quite sweet

        • -3

          Condensed milk. Yuck.

So instead of getting a sweet, strong coffee in a bottle, you can go to a Vietnamese bakery and get a sweet, strong coffee in a cup?

        • +1

@pennypincher98: it taste different compared to the off the shelf bottled coffee. I find bottled mild

          Yep, coffee in cup.

        • -1

@bob smith: If it tastes that much stronger I'm not sure I'd like it. I like Mochas for instance, but that doesn't mean I'll ask for heaps of extra chocolate that early in the morning.

      • Vietnamese coffee is used in two of the top 50 beers on Rate Beer.

        • -2

Certainly not the majority then. If it was good, maybe a bit more than 4% of the top beers would use it. Btw coffee and beer?? Not sure if I'd like it.

        • +2

@pennypincher98: stop being so belligerent and give it a go. viet iced coffee is delicious.

        • -3

@xyron: Last time I "gave something a go" it didn't turn out so well. Or if you are counting the cold press as having something as a go, that makes twice.

So far, all I know is that it uses condensed milk, is sugary and is sweet. Please tell me why I would pay $4 for a cup of that when I can get it in a bigger bottle for the same price or cheaper?

If you want me to try it, sell it to me. Saying "delicious" doesn't describe much. Some people think tofu is amazing, but I'm not that excited about soy bean curd.

        • +1

@pennypincher98: are you in Melbourne? I'd gladly buy you one. Viet ice coffee just has a good balance between the unique coffee flavour and the sweetness that comes from ordinary ice coffee. It is also more 'fragrant'.

Life is too short to say no to small experiences like this :)

        • -1

@xyron: Nah, I'm in NSW. Might be a bit hard working out a meeting place lol.

Fragrancy doesn't bother me, if I want the smell of coffee I just have to walk in somewhere lol. Or stick a coffee bean up my nose xD (interesting to see if that actually worked haha!)

        • @pennypincher98:
The 11th greatest beer in the WHOLE WORLD (by Alesmith) has Viet coffee. What more do you want?!

Coffee and stout beer is the perfect pairing. Real coffee complements roasted malt. You definitely do not know your beer.

Additionally, there are only three great quadrupel in the top 50. That should tell you everything about how impossible it is to even get a top 50 placing.

        • +1

@pennypincher98: nah when i say it's fragrant i dont mean it smells like coffee. I mean the flavour is more fragrant.

        • -1

          @Fobsessive

          The 11th Greatest beer

According to who? Besides, there are still 10 beers better than it. I don't quite frankly care where my beer ranks as long as it's cheap. Doesn't hurt to support the Australian economy and beer either.

You definitely do not know your beer.

Precisely. I get what's cheap and they happen to taste alright. I'm not into trying every single beer in the world just to see what's good.

Coffee and stout beer is the perfect pairing

Lol while this may be the case I'm struggling to find where this is relevant and/or useful? I don't have beer early in the morning. I have coffee. I don't have coffee in the evening. I have beer.
Tell me what the use is in giving me a massive caffeine dose right before I'm about to go to bed? I then spend a long time falling asleep, less sleep, earlier exhaustion, more caffeine - rinse and repeat.

So what Vietnamese coffee is used in the 11th greatest beer. Coffee is also used with Coke. And I know at least one of them tastes disgusting.

        • @pennypincher98: I have tasted hundreds of craft ales (mostly independently Australian owned). I definitely know a bit about beer.
FYI the 11th ranking is from Ratebeer, a user crowdsourced review site (www.ratebeer.com/beer/top). You have to be joking if you are discrediting the 11th ranking out of the hundreds of thousands of beers in the world.

No, I am not telling you to have a beer instead of coffee in the morning. As for the evening, the coffee addition is for depth of flavour, not caffeine.

My main point is that there has to be merit in Viet coffee if it is used in such a prestigious Alesmith barrel aged imperial stout.

        • @Fobsessive: Lol, I can't say I get you. You say that I have no idea about beer, which is true, then you are imply that I obviously must know about ratebeer. After that you then use, flowery terms such as

          prestigious Alesmith barrel imperial stout

which don't exactly do any favours for the fluency of your response.

Just because Vietnamese coffee is used in a world famous and renowned beer doesn't mean anything to me personally. It's like if David Beckham started using Lynx deodorant, doesn't mean I have to as well (yes, random example lol)
Or perhaps a better example, just because Manu uses Campbell's real stock, doesn't mean I do. Yeah he is famous and yeah its probably really good but its wasted on me.

        • @pennypincher98: A barrel aged imperial stout is not a flowery term…it is just a strong stout aged in a barrel.

I cannot agree with the Beckham example unless Lynx is what made Beckham what he is.

Ceebs further debating with someone over an ingredient…

        • -1

@Fobsessive: lol haven't heard the word "ceebs" used by anyone used over 18…

It is a flowery term to someone not familiar with beer. Same with chemistry, it's just an anal term unless you actually know what they are banging on about.

short post because I couldn't be bothered

        • +1

@pennypincher98: If you ever get into Viet coffee, this might also be interesting:

I had to scroll a long way to see if this had already been mentioned. Got hooked on this when in Vietnam a few years ago. So refreshing, and picks you up on a hot day!

I brought back some Trung Nguyen creative 8, and a Phin? filter, and love it! Agree, it’s for lovers of strong coffee.

  • +1

califia farms black and white is really good unsweetened ice coffee

mana cold brew is good if you can get your hands on it (melbourne only)

    • Whole Califia range is pretty good, hard to get made in the usa products these days.

  • +3

7 eleven iced coffee is the best.

  • +4

Barista Bros is just awful. I actually don't mind the Dare cold press, but for a dollar or two more I can get iced latte or long black from a cafe, so might as well do that for both taste and value.

I'm a fan of stronger coffee, so of the supermarket varieties, Dare double espresso is probably the best balance of sweet and coffee for my taste. Though I did try a Brownes Chill Double Espresso on a recent trip to WA and it was amazing. Never seen them in the Eastern states though.

As a side note, does anyone else find FUIC tastes weird these days? I don't know how to describe it, but it just tastes a bit off. I find the stuff borderline undrinkable now, but it still seems to have a strong following, so maybe my tastes have just changed.

  • Dare "Cold Pressed Strong Latte" if I'm out, if I'm home I always have some homemade coffee concentrate and have it neat over ice :) - I make it in a bucket, and use a cheap coffee bean from coles (Vittoria or Lavazza) - Coarse Grind, I then let it brew in a 15l bucket for a day and store in the fridge once filtered.

    • +1

have you tried the aldi beans? even cheaper and nastier, but i found make a better concentrate

      • I'll have to try, don't get to Aldi much but will make a trip to give them a shot. I assume its the ones in the white/green bag?

        • +1

i get the ones in the creamish coloured bag - blue for light roast (best) or red i think for the dark roast. Brand is Lazzio. I havent seen a white/green bag but i assume its probably an "organic" one or something.

          $11.50 a kilo normal price

  • I used to buy a lot of Dare Double Espresso. These days I do two scoops of Vanilla Connoisseur Ice Cream and Long Shot Nespresso. Simple and tasty! :)

  • I like Dare Hazelnut.

    Their Cold Pressed is disgusting.

    • I couldn't taste the hazelnut. Where is the hazelnut?

  • theres one called hunt and brew or something. its really good

also its absurdly expensive so i dont buy it

    In this order.

    1) Dare Double Espresso.
    2) 711 Iced coffee - tastes alright with little bit of sugar best option on sugar to taste scale.
    3) Dare Mocha
    4) Dare Espresso
    5) Doesn't matter what you buy they all taste terrible.
    6) Undrinkable Coffees - Dare Raw(stronger than Double espresso but next to no sugar), Dare ColdPressed range (watery coffee), Barista Brothers (Fake Coca Cola long life Coffee).

    • best option sugar to taste scale

Lol it might just be me, but my health and sugar content kind of goes out the window with iced coffee. They're all bad for sugar, and the ones that have less sugar taste terrible (although I don't normally have sugar in my coffee??)

I'm really wishing that they would bring out a double mocha. That would be my go to drink then :)

    • Dare Raw is only undrinkable for those who maintain a high-sugar diet. I think all their other drinks are undrinkable due to their sweetness.

      • There is too much coffee in there 2.5 shots of espresso on the strength scale Whereas double espresso is 2 and espresso is 1.

I think raw should have been 1 to 1.5 strength and would be fine.

  • +2

    Get good grinded coffee.
    Prepare cold brew.
    Mix with top shelf milk.
    ???
    Profit

  • Bannister Downs Cafe au Lait
Hunt and Brew Single Origin Iced Coffees

(Available in IGA and Coles in Perth, not sure with other states)

Although a lot of the time I just make my own cold brew mixed with a higher fat content milk… don't even need sugar.

  • +3

Wish there was a neg option.

Brownes coffee chill all the way (with real percolated coffee).

    • +1

This is my poison too. Everything else is too sweet.

    • +1

I'm just surprised I had to get to the second page to find it. I know its only available in WA, but its so damn good.
I have tried around 60 different (pre packaged) iced coffee's from around the world and the Browns Strong Percolated is still my favourite.
About 40 of the 60 were bloody awful, but I can't help trying any new one I see :P

      • Agreed! Anything UHT is instantly a NO. Most of the rest are powdered coffee and sugar. I wish there were more premium ones on the market with a real shot of espresso in them :)

They were selling Brownes over East when I was there years ago but only in selected supermarkets, probably not the case anymore. Brownes all the way (shame they got sold to foreign investors recently though).

  • +1

Dare lacks flavour for me buts good, leaves one stuck on the toilet though lol

    • I've had a 750mL bottle of Dare Double Espresso and at first I thought, this isn't bad I thought I'd be on the toilet all day. Next day, I won't tell you how many times I had to go lol

  • It really depends on whether you enjoy coffee, or you just want a tiny taste of coffee with lots of sugar.

Most cafes serve iced cold drip, cold brew or even an iced latte / long black / etc.

Vietnamese bakeries serve filter coffee with condensed milk over ice.

7-11 convenience stores sell iced coffee and even affogatos.

If you want to save money you could purchase the cheapest beans and make your own cold brew.

In my opinion the worst option would be purchasing one of those milk and lots of sugar iced coffees that are typically sold in the supermarket.

    • +1

What happens if I enjoy my coffee by having lots of sugar in iced coffee :)

But when I get an iced coffee, I'm only getting it because it's too hot for normal hot coffee. Or when the train leaves in a few minutes and all that's around is a Woolworths (ie Chatswood). Which is a considerable amount of time combined. Other times, I can't go past a normal coffee without sugar.

  • +1

Im an Ice Break guy. Sure its full of sugar but it tastes good. Failing that my local coffee place does them but theyre pricey.

    • +1

Haha yes Ice Break Double/Extra Strength is good indeed. You can also have 3 in one day without spending the next one on the toilet (unlike Dare) lol.

But wow, there is so much sugar in there it makes a Dare ice coffee seem healthy.

  • +1

Coca-Cola's Barista Bros coffee is the subject of the funniest internet comment I've ever witnessed. It was along the lines of it tasting like 'tongue-punching the ass-hole of a long-haul truck driver'.

  • +1

Barista Bros are terrible, they only get sales because there is no other choices in takeaway/cafe stores with this.

    Farmers Union is great.

  • Both options are rubbish…Farmers Union Ice Coffee all the way!

  • Norco's Triple Shot ice coffee

    • I tried this when I went to the Gold Coast. Do they sell it in NSW?

  • Barista Bros Ice Coffees i call lougi coffee, when you come back to it after 30min it makes a layer of nasty shit on the top and tastes bad..

    Dare is good, but yeh

  • I'm in agreement with everyone saying 'make it yourself' / Bargain and healthier

  • Get yourself a cold-drip coffee apparatus, or for a simpler method, make coffee in a plunger, leave it overnight.

Then pour them into ice trays and freeze.

Pop them out later into cold milk.

    There you go…

    • It's just like having juice ice blocks, only its caffeinated.

Did this with vodka once, went lovely as a Popsicle :)

      • +1

        Ohh noo… soo dangerous!

        B-)

  • You can get a very nice iced coffee from cafes at around $5. How much do these supermarket ones go for?

    • $5!?!? Lol you must have smashed avocado on ciabatta bread.

Haha seriously though, these iced coffees cost $2-$3. And these are around 500-750mL (except that horrible cold press is 300ml of sadness)

    • I usually order an iced latte.
Costs the same as a normal coffee ($3.50-$4 depending on cafe) just made with ice and cold milk.

  • FUIC

  • I've become addicted to this. The regular one tastes like ass, but the mocha one is great:
    https://www.califiafarms.com/cocoa-noir-cold-brew-coffee

    • Hmm, seems like something I might try. Any idea where to find this and price wise? (Is it really ~$4 a bottle?)

      • I usually grab one from Coles on the way into work. It has an 'on special' tag a lot of the time, and so it's usually nowhere near 4 dollars.

        • Oh ok, I'll look out for it next time I'm at Coles :)
          Cheers.

  • Thoughts on Barista Bros were given in this ol' deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/284241

  • Hunt and Brew is decent and has a LOT of caffeine and isn't sweet. Pretty much everything else is too sweet. Make cold brew at home with coles medium-dark roast and mix 1:1 with milk, smashes anything premade and costs a fraction of something premade.

  • Personal opinion, Dare is okay in a rush or when you need a wake up call on a hot day. One of their more traditioan iced coffees is actually decent for a grab n go. Barista Bros is just foul. Watery, stale tasting and clearly made at the lowest cost possible.

    • Yeah I like dare double espresso and dare mochas, so I thought the cold press would be a step above. Clearly I was wrong lol.

  • +2

get an espresso machine, make your own coffee. greatest investment ever

  • -1

Do not try and bend the spoon enjoy the taste. That's impossible. Instead only try to realise the truth.
    What truth?
    There is no spoon taste.
    There is no spoon? taste?
Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends flavour that is enjoyed, it is only yourself the effect.

    • lol, bad, worth it

  • +1

Just go to a cafe and ask for ice coffee.
then you can have it how you like. no sugar, sugar. with milk if you want. fancier places may even have cold brewed coffee.

    • +1

Fancier places are where I go to for hot coffee and I want to cut back on those costs.. Don't want to increase them by getting my iced coffee from there as well lol

      • I Get it!

If you have a Moka pot at home I used to brew a big amount and leave it in a jar in the fridge. Then pour it in glass over ice and some nice soy milk (like vitasoy or bonsoy)

to have to coffee pre made like that made it really quick even when leaving for work in the mornings if you have like a thermos or similar.

you can also make it really strong like 50% coffee if you like haha

Even though soy milk can have plenty of sugar i found those pre made ones just taste like milk and sugar and you cant really taste the coffee

        • +1

Haha I don't have a Moka pot but I might look into it, I'm all for quick coffees. If I can make a coffee the long way fine enough for me to drink it, I'm already awake enough.

  • Barista bros- putrid and waaaaay to sweet for me. My fave is Ice break double shot

  • It's A Farmers Union Iced Coffee Or It's Nothing

  • I love the Barista Bros. I can't have normal ice coffee but that I can have.

  • +1

+1 for Vietnamese iced coffee… its so face slappingly strong but the balance is there with the sweetness. I don't have sugar in my normal coffee but if I'm ordering an iced coffee it's because I want something sweet.

FUIC is a good balance for me, so is Jacarandah (QLD only?)… plus there was this stuff they sell at the BP at Woodford outside Bris in glass bottles that was great. wish I remembered the name

  • Rokeby

  • V Iced Coffee.

There's a coffee kick to it and definitely does not taste like V. It's UHT so 9 month shelf life but it's decent in flavour.

As for Barista Bros… It's milk powder, water sugar and freeze dried coffee - very obvious they use skim milk because of how thin the texture is.

  • I was sold by the Barista Bros coffee when they had the ad showing a Guatemalan old man vouching for it given he's a strong coffee drinker.
It was the worst iced coffee ive ever tried, I think Moove was nicer
