  • Hey guys
what's this brushless technology..is it more durable than normal ones?

i bought something(Masters closing down sale) similar but think it was brushless, never used it anyway..

    • +2

Probably not more durable as it has more electronics, but it doesn't have brushes that will eventually need replacement, and is more efficient. You'll get more torque out of x amount of power, or longer battery life with x amount of torque.

Brushed motors have graphite/copper brushes that rub on a brass commutator to rotate the motor. Generally these have a high resistance and are high friction limiting power and generating heat. They also wear out eventually. Brushless motors are electronically commutated allowing more power and less frictional losses. Generally brushless is more efficient (pretty much always) which has other advantages like better battery life. There is also less parts to wear out. It is trivial to drive a brushless motor with modern electronics which is why they are common now but most manufacturers charge heavy premiums for brushless.

Durable, sure, if they're using quality parts. However its a new technology, and as with all new tech that is built to a price there are going to be hickups as they refine the process.
If you buy from bunnings its sort of a mute point anyway. If it fails you can just take it straight back and swap it over.
      Best thing about bunnings.

      • +1

2nd best thing. Snags are #1.

        • Dunno. I hate when i get caught on stuff

      • Radio contolled models have been brushless for years …..bugs sorted long ago.

        • +1

          ..Radio controlled drills?

      • Hardly new technology. Brushless motors were around when the Holden HQ was the bee's knees.
And if you are sitting in front of a computer with a hard drive and a DVD drive, you own at least two brushless motors.
And although brushed motors are almost a thing of the past, they still have a cost advantage - especially with cheap Chinese manufactured goods.
However, responsible manufacturers have committed to brushless motors for increased efficiency and also to slow the drain on natural resources and the damage to our environment.

What you and garage sale above are missing, is that although brushless motors are a well established technology, building them cheaply and packing them into an enclosed space subject to various airborn particles is not.

You want to build a brushless drill, thats no problem. You want to build a brushless drill that operates for extended times, in hostile environments at high power. You want a drill thats easily manufactored from a few discrete components that can be substituted as needed according to market conditions. You want a drill that isn't going to be properly maintained, will be dropped and abused, will be stored in bad conditions. And you want it all for less than $200?

Thats where the new frontier of brushless technology is. Anybody can build a drill. But building a drill that satisfies all the conditions needed, and building it to a price, is where uncertainty comes from

        • @outlander: Yeah, it's a bit like saying Li-Ion batteries and motors is hardly new technology, so there's nothing special about a Tesla car.

    • +3

An unused brushless drill will last much longer than an unused brushed drill.

      • same goes with my brushed drill too, i just bought when i saw it was on sale.

  • +9

and that one time you drilled 5 holes all at once, the brushless will have slightly more battery life remaining, as you put it away for the next 6 months.

  • +1

    6 year warranty

  • 6ah! Good deal if you need one.
